13443  Member Activities / Pets / Re: My Parrot Chewey laid an egg!! on: 06-Aug-11, 05:10:35 AM
Chewey so far, laid only the 2 eggs. Looks like she was going to lay another as her abdomen looks eggish but it's been over a week and nothing. She's eating like a pig, playing with her rings, hanging upside down and poohing just fine, so if there is an egg in there, she's not egg-bound. I wouldn't know anyway as we are both new to this. (I'm still not over the fact that he's a she yet). I gave her some cooked chicken the other day and the little cannibal ate it. Tried Broccoli, she threw it out of her dish, (guess not)! She loves the pasta and egg noodles. Other than that, she seems fine. She has no attachment to the egg in her cage, she actually rolls it out of her way, it must annoy her. Should I remove that egg or leave it?? Thanks for asking!!

has anyone seen Beauty since the reported  possible falcon fight this am--Unity and Archer seem
to be okay

Nope, she has not been at the nest all day. That might have been her earlier on FCT. So that would be after Carol's sightings. MAK will be out early and she won't leave until she finds the Beautiful one!

Out of all the babies this year, Mark Nash's Fav is Cinnamon. I picked Harlequin. Cinni was like the Juvie that almost couldn't but made a great "turn-a-round".
13446  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Killer plant 'eats' great tit at Somerset nursery BBC news on: 05-Aug-11, 07:23:57 PM
A plant has killed and "eaten" a great tit at a garden nursery in Somerset.

Nurseryman Nigel Hewitt-Cooper, from West Pennard, was inspecting his tropical garden when he discovered one of his pitcher plants had trapped the bird.

He said he was "absolutely staggered" to find it had caught the creature.

It is believed to be only the second time such a carnivorous plant has been documented eating a bird anywhere in the world.

"I've got a friend who's studied these particular plants extensively in the wild and he's never found evidence of any of them having caught birds," said Mr Hewitt-Cooper.

"The other documented time was in Germany a few years ago and that was in cultivation, not in the wild.
'Become wedged'

"The larger ones frequently take frogs, lizards and mice, and the biggest ones have been found with rats in them, but to find a bird in one is pretty unusual."

The pitcher plant is a genus of Nepenthes from South East Asia which attracts and traps insects in a pool of liquid which it then digests.

Mr Hewitt-Cooper said he thought the blue tit had been attracted to the plant on Saturday by the insects and landed on its leaf.

"I think it must have leant in to pluck out an insect that was floating on the fluid inside, tipped in too far and become wedged and unable to get out."

Mr Hewitt-Cooper has been growing carnivorous plants such as pitcher plants, Venus fly traps and sundews for 30 years, and has won several gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show.

5 August

We are sorry to report that one of the young Peregrine Falcons (female, green band) that fledged six weeks ago in downtown Boise was injured so badly on Thursday that she had to be euthanized. A maintenance worker discovered the injured bird on the roof of the Wells Fargo building, which is in the block next to One Capital Center where the nest box is located. Bill Heinrich of The Peregrine Fund retrieved her from the roof and saw that she had at least one broken leg. The young falcon was taken to a local veterinarian who discovered that both legs were broken. The radiograph shows just how extensive the injuries were. Evidently, she had collided with something, perhaps a powerline or a building. The experts determined that her injuries could not be repaired and she had no chance to survive on her own.

This loss is evidence that the first year in the life of a young bird of prey is extremely hazardous. In fact, more than half of fledglings do not survive their first year. Collisions, predators, weather and many other factors present tough challenges for young birds. We hope that the other three youngsters from this year’s breeding season will continue to do well.
