Salt Lake City Peregrine Falcons
Necropsies results for Bird# 1 Amelia and Bird #2 Sally:
"There was no sign of infectious disease in either bird. The lab saw evidence that both birds suffered from a huge fall. Bird# 1 had a ruptured crop that led to a bacterial infection and a bruised heart. Bird # 2 was extremely emaciated and the crop/intestines were completely empty. She also had a contusion on the top of the head attributed to a large fall.â€

How very sad for both.  crying

Camden — A few folks gathered in front of the Camden Post Office Aug. 1, shortly after 8 a.m., to watch a peregrine falcon perched on the belfry of the Chestnut Street Baptist Church.

Peregrine falcons are listed on Maine's endangered species list .

The peregrine falcon is a sleek, rapid-flying bird of prey. Its wingspan measures 35 to 46 inches, body length ranges from 13 to 19 inches, and weight is 20 to 35 ounces. Females are about 30 percent larger than males; otherwise the sexes are similar in appearance.

Maine's reintroduced peregrines are a genetic blend of many subspecies and races from around the world and vary in plumage characteristics, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

13512  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Peregrine Falcon Nesting Season Concludes – Population Continues To Grow on: 02-Aug-11, 07:15:28 AM
COLUMBUS, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Young peregrine falcons across Ohio have fledged, marking the end of the 2011 nesting season.

There were 39 sites with territorial pairs, of which 34 nests produced eggs. There were an additional five sites with single peregrines present.

This year there were 34 nest sites where an estimated 111 eggs were produced; 26 of those nests hatched young falcons and 24 sites fledged 67 juveniles successfully. The 2011 hatch rate was 70 percent, up slightly from 2010 (67 percent). Additionally, there were two new sites with territorial pairs across the state this year from the 37 pairs in 2010.

The first pair of peregrines nested in Ohio in 1988 at the Commodore Perry Hotel in Toledo. From 1989-1993, along with several other Midwestern states, the Ohio Division of Wildlife hacked 46 birds throughout the state. Peregrine falcons were delisted as a federal endangered species in 1999, and down-listed in Ohio to state threatened in 2008. Peregrines remain on the state threatened list and the Division of Wildlife continues to monitor the population.

Ohio’s peregrine falcon program is supported by the state income tax check-off program, donations to the Wildlife Diversity and Endangered Species Fund, and sales of the Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp, and the cardinal license plate. Individuals wanting to donate can also make an online contribution at wildohio.com.

Matching federal funds are provided through the State Wildlife Grant Program for this project and other wildlife diversity efforts of the Division of Wildlife that target species of greatest conservation need.

By Peggy Delisi of North Carolina

It was early one morning in May 2010 and I was driving my usual route to go to the farm to visit my horses.  I had only gone a few miles when I saw this Cardinal sitting on the side of the road. As my truck approached the little bird, I noticed it continued to sit there and I thought that was very strange, so I pulled into the next driveway and came back to where the Cardinal was still sitting and pulled into the parking lot there.

I got out of my truck and approached the bird and it did not move, but his eyes were open.  Obviously there was something wrong for this little guy not to fly off.  I reached down and picked him up and wondered, now what am I going to do because it was Sunday and I was on my way to the farm.

A Friend in the Right Place at the Right Time

I decided to call my friend who lives just off this same road and who rescues a lot of animals.  She told me to bring him to her house and she would check him out and watch him for a little while to see if he would recover and could be released.  We figured he may have flown into someone’s car and just be stunned — as least that was the hope.

I left my little Cardinal rescue at my friend’s house and she put him in a cage to recover.  When I talked to her later, she told me when she opened the cage door about 3 hours later, the little guy flew off!  It made us both very happy!

13514  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Owners left ‘feline’ shocked as cat brings nest into Somerset home (UK) on: 02-Aug-11, 06:51:36 AM
A cat shocked her owners by dragging an entire bird’s nest and three live baby chicks into their house.

Bella, a five-year-old tortoiseshell cat, deposited the twig-strewn mess containing a small goldcrest songbird at Vikki and Wesley Spencer’s home in Taunton. Then the feline then came back into the room with two more chicks in her mouth. Sadly, two of the birds later died but the rest are being cared for by the RSPCA

Shocked Vikki, from Taunton, Somerset, said: ‘‘The nest just looked like a bit of tumbleweed lying on the floor, we didn’t know what it was.

‘‘While we were all looking at it Bella had gone out again and she came back with the two other birds in her mouth and just dropped them on the floor.

‘’She looked at Wesley as if to say, ‘that’s my nest, what are you doing with it?‘

‘‘I couldn’t believe it.’‘

Vikki placed the nestlings in an airing cupboard overnight to keep the birds warm and took them to RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre, near Taunton, the next morning.

Peter Venn, manager at RSPCA West Hatch, said: ‘‘Two of the birds sadly died but one of them is doing very well.

“I’ve not heard of a cat doing anything like this before.’‘

The remaining goldcrest will be cared for at RSPCA West Hatch until it is old enough to be released into the wild.

Goldcrests are the UK’s smallest songbird, with adults standing at just 9cm high.

The birds are dull green above and buff white below with a distinctive orange or yellow crown stripe.

It is found almost wherever there are trees and bushes, especially conifers.
