Scarborough- yellow pages - All 3 young were seen
July 23, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
Ann Brokelman Reports:

Yellow Pages

Stopped in at 12 noon.  Heard one screaming while in the car.  Young female soared right by me - see attached photo.  Male joined her in flight.  Both headed to the photo buiding and dissappeared. Total quiet within 5 min. I stopped on my way home from shopping 5:00pm to see the male with the yellow band sitting right on top of the yellow pages screaming.  So all 3 were accounted for.  No sign of any adults.

Could be weather related like a lot of the eggs in the Uk this season and here also. It's been a rough one for sure. Hoping for better results next year. I wonder if Beauty's were the same. Thanks Chris.

13658  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Barn owls face kestrel nest box 'takeover' (UK) on: 23-Jul-11, 06:47:00 AM
Kestrels have been muscling in on nest boxes designed to help boost the barn owl population in Falkirk.

Rangers said the birds of prey had "taken a shine" this year to the nesting boxes, first put up in 2007.

Since the project was launched, 21 barn owl chicks and nine kestrel chicks have hatched in the boxes.

That includes 16 new arrivals this year - with eight from each species. The birds are monitored by volunteer Phil May and Falkirk Council ranger service.

The boxes were set up when conservationists realised the number of barn owls were declining in the area a result of breeding site loss and a lack of suitable nesting sites.

Falkirk Council said the nesting boxes were now vital in helping conserve and increase the local barn owl population.

Adrian Mahoney, leisure, tourism and community convener at the authority said: "The success we have had so far with this project demonstrates that our commitment to preserving wildlife is paying off and is enriching our local biodiversity.

"A special thanks to local landowners for supporting this project which is most definitely increasing the barn owl population."

Mr Mahoney added it was "encouraging" that kestrels were also benefiting from the project.

13659  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Barn Swallows declining in B.C. on: 23-Jul-11, 06:44:39 AM
The population of Barn Swallows has dwindled by 70 per cent in the last 20 years around the world, and researchers in Canada say it is worse here than anywhere else.

Reporter Linda Aylesworth was took a close look at the Barn Swallows on Thursday and saw first-hand how they are struggling.

The Barn Swallow is an aerial insectivore, meaning it catches insects for food while in-flight, and aerial insectivores are in trouble all over the world.

One reason could be the use of pesticides, but other problems include light pollution, climate change, and temperature and precipitation extremes. With all the rain in B.C. in the past few months, it is no wonder the insect population is suffering. Flying insects don’t fly and Barn Swallows don’t eat.

The loss of nesting sites is also a concern, as Barn Swallows prefer barns and stables, especially old wooden structures. However, those buildings are also in decline.

Experts believe the decline of the Barn Swallow is an indication that our ecosystem might no longer be able to support species such as Finches or Night Hawks and other endangered species. More research is needed as well as laws that enforce the changes needed to save these and other species.

!!! Baby Courtney takes three more flights, meets some very unhappy avian neighbours, and finally ends the at the Peel police station on an unmarked police car in the parking lot.
July 22, 2011 - Brampton - Courthouse
CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday July 22nd - 2011 afternoon and evening report.

In an effort to explain today’s events with so much that has happened, I’m going to have summerize the days events until I can gather and organize all of our field notes and photos. In short, after three flights, with the last flight taking place at 8:45pm, Courtney was rescued from the top of an unmarked Peel police car in the police station parking lot on the west side of Hunrontario Street across the street from the courthouse. She was rescued successfully and returned to the upper courthouse ledge on the same east side where she was released two days ago. She settled down on the ledge as darkness closed in and seemed no worse for ware despite having a very busy day.

A week or so back there were pictures of Quest picking at her harness and speculation that her transmitter  would soon be falling off.  Did that happen?

Not yet, she's still sporting it.

The missing chick has been found. There was an article in the South Bend Tribune, which I can't access (apparently due to "inappropriate content" (?). I can only access this:

13 Jul 2011 – SOUTH BEND -- The peregrine falcon chick that went missing last week downtown ... said the chick was found Monday morning next to the AT&T ...

I'm glad the missing juvie has been found, and was returned to the nest box.

Me too Alison, I was worried about her. Not much news since.
