13831  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Eggs or No Eggs at KP! That is the Question! on: 10-Jul-11, 05:30:44 AM
This whole egg thing baffles me. Even if these are NEW eggs, she just started laying on them. If these are OLD eggs, did she just suddenly feel inclined to start incubating? Maybe it's a long over due reaction that should have been done like long ago. I don't even think Google can help me with this answer.

Great night shot that looks like day Joyce. Thanks.

Max & Olivia flying high
July 09, 2011 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill
Doug Garbutt Reports:

Tonight, my wife Rose & I went on a bike ride out to the lake to check on the young falcons. We were able to see both along with Mom & Dad. The young were showing off their newly learned flying skills (alot in tandem). I guess they were not too hungry as they did not appear interested in the smorgasbord of  birds available in their airspace. Makes us feel good that these guys still have a shot at survival & if they learn the necessary hunting skills, they will be on their way to having a family of their own one day.

Lady Gaga on the mend Windsor Star

Peregrine falcon Lady Gaga was putting some weight on a newly fixed left leg Friday.

"Lady Gaga is actually standing on the leg," Canadian Peregrine Foundation - Windsor Watch site coordinator Dennis Patrick said Friday.

A day after the falcon's 2½-hour surgery, she was doing fine and on her way to a rehabilitation facility in Vaughan near Toronto.

The plan is to have the falcon stay there until the leg is healed enough that she can be released back at the nest site under the Ambassador Bridge.

SOUTH BEND -- One of the two peregrine falcon chicks that hatched this spring on the County-City Building is missing, according to a volunteer who tracks the birds.

The two chicks, both of which are females, left their nesting box atop the 14-story building about 10 days ago.

Volunteers have seen one of the chicks on the roofs of smaller downtown buildings. They have been unable to locate the other chick since it was seen Thursday morning on a ledge of American Trust Place at Michigan and Washington streets, said Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator.

Riewe said the chicks, born in mid-May, still are dependent on their mother for food. Therefore, the missing chick is at risk of dehydration and starvation as long as it's separated.  Sad

Anyone who spots the bird should call South Bend Animal Care and Control at 574-235-9303, city police at 574-235-9636 or Riewe at 574-339-7913.

Ya beat me to it, Donna. How amazing - but who is cleaning her kitchen?! (I would have been the mad person who kept the door open too... You?)

If I lived alone, yes!! With Ed, you kidding!! LOL

We've had swallows "prospecting" around The Shed (read: Dumping Grounds) - and Rod went and knocked out all the windows. They declined our invitation this year... obviously need fancier digs. And tidier ones too!

Shed, of course, kitchen....umm I don't think so!

Four fledgling swallows have successfully hatched in a nest their parents built on a picture frame above a sink in a woman's kitchen.

The young birds are preparing to fly their unusual nest in Pam Jones's rural cottage near Roch in Pembrokeshire.

Their parents, who built the nest from mud and straw, fly in and out of the back door bringing them food.

Ms Jones, 79, said they seemed unflustered by her presence or that of her cat and dog.

The pensioner said she feeds a wide variety of wild birds from sparrows to pheasants in her garden.

So she was delighted when the swallows started nesting in her kitchen.

She said she did not think that the eggs would hatch as the parents did not seem to spend much time sitting on them, but believes the heat in the kitchen helped them survive.

She keeps her back door open during the day so the parents can fly in and out to gather food.

After dark the whole family settle down in the nest.

"It's an unusual place to build a nest," she said.

"It's so sweet. They are very very happy sat up there with their mother bringing them food."

The parents make full use of the kitchen perching on a Chinese ornament on the other side of the room.

Ms Jones, who plays classical music to them, thinks they are barn swallows.

She believes once the young fly the nest the parents will try to hatch more young before migrating for the winter.

"They really are gorgeous. I will be sorry to see them go," she added
