Kat, can you hear Harlequin kakking up on the ledge? Is she a noisy one? She doesn't seem to be whining too much from what I can see on cam.

Funny you should ask that! I haven't heard much, but this morning there was crazy loud screeching that I could hear through the windows over here in our building. I even went outside because I thought something was wrong, but turns out it was just Harlequin screeching for Quest. Probably past snack time!

Thanks Kat, she doesn't seem to make a lot of noise, usually her beak is shut, except for this morning. I did her beak open quite a bit.  baby

Look at Harlequin, getting her brown Juvie chest! She is growing so fast.

Has anyone seen Kendal since banding? I have yet to see him on cam since then. That is one scarce bird.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- A $1,000 reward is being offered in the case of two wounded peregrine falcons. The Department of Fish and Game says someone in the Oakland hills opened fire on them with a pellet gun.

Veterinarians at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum Hospital in Walnut Creek are giving are treating Hiya, a peregrine falcon recovering from pellet gun wounds. Her daughter, Marina, was also shot. She's being treated there as well.

"They were both badly hurt, both of them have fractured wings, their bones have been broken by the shots, serious enough where they needed surgical fixation on the fractured wings," Lindsay Wildlife Museum Hospital spokesperson Susan Heckly said.

Both falcons were found on the ground 10 days apart in Oakland's Lincoln Heights neighborhood. Neighbors found out about it Monday from a flyer that was delivered door to door.

"Anger, absolute just horror," resident Hollis Matson said when asked about the incidents. "Who in my neighborhood could be doing something like this?"

The peregrine falcons have a famous connection. Hiya's mate was part of the family that got a lot of attention living on the roof of San Jose City Hall.

But beyond their celebrity connections, these birds, under state and a federal law, are not to be messed with, which is why Fish and Game wardens are following up every lead in hopes of finding the person responsible.

"Their population is always you know it's always on a balance beam, going up and down, up and down and they can become endangered again, really quickly," Fish and Game Warden William O'Brian said.

Veterinarians are guarded about the falcons' prognosis. They say the good news is that they are healing and eating on their own.

Quest flew to nest, Harlie out of view. Suddenly, here comes Harlie. Hopped up on nest and went to greet mom, apparently hoping for a meal. They snuggled for a minute and gave kisses to each other. I love the mornings there. heart

Oh boy, I have no idea Anne and not even going to take a stab at this. Worries me why they are ignoring the 2. Just doesn't sound like RM or Tiago. As long as the Juvies are around and flying, I would assume feedings are an instinct thing. This is strange behavior. Could Sunshine be interfering with the feedings and RM is focusing on just her right now? I just don't know.

Not sure what I think of captive raptors, but this is interesting.

And a barn Owl too, Floccus. Guess they have to do what they have to do and Raptors are usually the answer.

Happy Feet On The Road To Recovery (but not home).
June 28, 2011 by Eric Bennett

The Penguin Post is pleased to report that full recovery for the young emperor penguin — affectionately dubbed Happy Feet — is looking more and more like a distinct possibility, although it may take months.  But, even given the first real optimistic prognosis in days officials are unsure when or how it could return home to the Antarctic, about 2,000 miles away. The penguin was recovering well after the an endoscopy performed by one of New Zealand’s leading surgeons — for human patients. Doctors at the Wellington Zoo guided a camera on a tube through the penguin’s swollen intestines and flushed its stomach to remove the swallowed sand and pieces of driftwood. Penguins eat snow to hydrate themselves during the harsh Antarctic winter. To ensure the health of its newest star, the zoo brought in Wellington Hospital specialist John Wyeth to help with the procedure, New Zealand Press Association reported. Monday’s surgery went well, and doctors removed about half of the remaining sand and several twigs from the bird’s digestive system, zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker said. Medical staff hope the rest of the debris will pass naturally, but an X-ray is scheduled for Wednesday. “It’s positive news, but he’s definitely not out of the woods yet,” Baker said. The penguin is now dining on fish slurry and has been standing and appearing more active than when it arrived, Baker said. The bird was moved to the zoo Friday after its health worsened on the beach. The penguin is being housed in a room at the zoo chilled to about 46 degrees Fahrenheit, Baker said, and has a bed of ice on which it can sleep. Happy Feet (nicknamed by local authorities and the press from the 2006 animated movie), was discovered last week on a North Island beach, the first spotting of an emperor in New Zealand in 44 years. Emperors typically spend their entire lives around Antarctica. After landing on Peka Peka Beach last week, the penguin appeared health at first, but it became dehydraded, suffered heat exhaustion and was eating large amounts of sand.

What’s next for Happy Feet still remains to be decided. Peter Simpson, the program manager of diversity for the Department of Conservation, said he is meeting with penguin experts Wednesday at the zoo to consider options. He said it’s not simply a matter of tossing the penguin back into the ocean off New Zealand’s coast. “There’s no great rush to decide,” Simpson said. “It will most likely need more medical work over the next three months.” Simpson said the penguin will likely remain at the zoo for that time while it recovers. Gareth Morgan, a New Zealand investment adviser, has offered to transport the penguin back to Antarctica next February when he leads an expedition to the southern continent. But Simpson said that, while officials appreciate the offer, they may want to act before then. Simpson said the penguin may be older than experts first thought — perhaps up to 2 1/2 years old rather than the initial estimate of 10 months. It stands about 3 feet (80 centimeters) high. Experts still don’t know if it’s a male or female, Simpson said, although DNA samples should soon provide an answer.

Happy Feet up and about in its new enclosure as it recovers.

I just got this from Zoe, a fellow watcher, who is at work, but saw Harry, our early morning watcher, on her coffee break:

"Harry can see all the family - the 2 [Kate and Cinnamon] are on the Bell building and Cinnamon has been doing several flights keeping height including the "E" on the Sheraton."

Well, that sounds positive!  The "E" is up higher than the nest ledge!!  Cinnamon is making good, despite the odds!  Maybe he got fed earlier this morning.  I sure do hope so!!  Just thought I'd let you all know.  I am heading down for 2pm today, needed a slight reprieve from going in earlier...  Will let you know about the day tonight.

EXCELLENT!!! I'm so happy Cinni is doing well!! Thanks Anne!!!  2thumbsup
