14311  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Time to fly: Two Bettys meet in rare air high above Jackson on: 17-Jun-11, 08:54:45 PM
http://blog.mlive.com/bradosphere/2011/06/time_to_fly_two_bettys_meet_hi.html Story

Betty Dahlem Desbiens, a philanthropist and nature lover, had one small request when a rare peregrine falcon chick was named in her honor last week in Jackson.

Desbiens wanted to see the chick in its nest high on the Jackson County Tower Building.

Her request was granted in memorable style Friday.

The 3rd juvie fledged at St. John the Divine yesterday evening...video of the fledge was caught by Bruce Yolton & is posted on his Urban Haws blog

They are beautiful. Do they get into as much trouble as falcons on first flights?

Smiley All is good with Quest and Harlie. Quest has fed Harlie twice tonight.   Harlie is going to have to be air-lifted out of the nest/scrape  lol

That's what the heavy rope is for!!!  hysterical

!!! We have a Fledge!!!
June 17, 2011 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill
Doug Garbutt Reports:

This morning when I arrived at work at 6:50 am there was only 1 young one in the box. Olivia at 43 days of age decided to take the big jump. She may have left late yesterday or early this morning. During my lunch break I took the opportunity to try and locate her. I was able to do so. Camera in hand, I managed to get a few photos of the new “free of the nest box” falcon. She appears to be able to get around pretty good as she 1st landed on the roof then flew up to a higher dust filter then around to the other side of our facility landing on a beam high up at the 10th floor level of our grain elevator. These are baby steps but she did very well on her maiden flight. We always worry about them ending up in the Welland Canal. I should mention that when she was on the roof that (like at the Burlington site), Rocky racoon was spotted. Perhaps that is what inspired Olivia to move to the other side of the building. Her brother Max is still stuck in the box. He looks ready to go and we think tomorrow will be his turn. Mom & Dad are not feeding him much.

I just talked to Marion Nash. They are preparing for Tuesday's banding. She said to let you all know. Everything is fine. PHEW!!!

Thanks, Donna.  Did she tell you how or in what way they will approach the  scrape? Lowered down from the roof?

She said they are getting the swing stage ready!

has anyone been in touch with the Harlequin or CPF people?  I'm sure they are aware of it.
Maybe there is building maintenance being done ?  Poor Quest.

I don't think anyone is suppose to do anything unless CPF is notified. After all, Quest and family are protected!
That's what I thought, Donna.  Could it be an early preparation for Tuesday's banding?  Maybe they are trying to acclimate Quest to "things"  that are coming?

Hopefully, they wouldn't spook her twice like that. Where's all the contacts?

It's like she's waiting for our approval.

Just looked at the camera and Quest keeps looking up and around at something or someone!

There is a rope hanging down in front of the nest, is today banding day?

OMG, maybe someone can find out from someone!! Not good!

Flying Well, others unfledged
June 16, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

Sunshine continues to impress all of us with her wonderful flight skills. Zoe reported today, the Sunshine made it up to the KPMG signage to join an adult , but didn’t stay long. The others are still enjoying meals at home, with not a lot of activity late this afternoon. Some vocalization when the adults come into view. Cinnamon still has evidence of white on him. Kate is looking more and more like Sunshine as she matures and darkens.  I think this might be the weekend for another fledge.

Go Sunshine!
