Has anyone from Harlequin joined our forum? Would love to hear their reports, especially what Kendal does all day, where he sits.....etc. I thought for sure we would have an on site reporter.

14359  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Baby blackbirds nest in 4x4 car engine at Porthcawl (UK) on: 16-Jun-11, 07:26:44 AM
Birds have been known to nest in some curious places, but one family of blackbirds are more daredevil than some.

Four chicks were found huddled beneath the 4x4 car's bonnet by its owner, Maureen Morris.

Without her knowledge, the birds' parents opted to build their home in the car engine several weeks ago.

They have survived Mrs Morris of Porthcawl, Bridgend county, making many trips and appear to be healthy.

Mrs Morris, 56, said: "My dog Scooby began pawing at the front of the car and when I opened the bonnet I was amazed to see the birds in their nest.

"I touched them and they opened their eyes and beaks, expecting to be fed.

"They already had lovely black feathers and bright orange beaks.

"It was a complete shock. I've never seen anything like this before.

"I must have driven hundreds of miles with them sitting under the bonnet.

"Everyone is saying I've got the jeep that cheeps!"

Mrs Morris had even driven her Suzuki Jimny 4x4 on a 100-mile round trip to a recent family wedding.

She said: "It doesn't appear to have done them any harm but I don't know what the parents make of it.

"One minute their nest is on the driveway of my home - the next it has gone.

"Now we know they are there we can watch the birds being fed by their mother - she flies under the car to reach them."

Experts have advised her to carry on driving as normal until they fly the nest.

Kirsi Peck, from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), said: "Blackbirds look for somewhere hidden and safe to build their nests.

"The chicks are getting to the stage of leaving the nest and are close to fledging."

14360  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Falcon chick's new home after Denbighshire rescue (UK) on: 16-Jun-11, 07:22:34 AM
A team of experts and volunteers have rescued an injured peregrine falcon chick, finding it a new foster home 300 miles (482km) away.
The saga began when the bird fell from its rocky ledge in Henllan, Denbighshire, needing surgery.
Rescuers then found its parents had left the nest, and began a search for a suitable new home with other chicks.
Now, it is back in the wild with new peregrine parents and other chicks - in Scotland.

The saga started when climbers came across the injured bird in Henllan, near Denbigh, earlier this month.
They carried it to a local vets before specialists at nearby North Wales Raptor Rescue, near Ruthin, were called in.
Gary Dickinson, who runs the centre, drove it to specialist Liverpool-based vet Alan Humphreys who cleaned its wounds and "carefully stitched its paper-like skin".

Chick's best chance'

After recovering from its anaesthetic and surgery, it was transferred back to the rescue centre for rehabilitation before Mr Dickinson and partner Jane tried to return its to its nest or scrape, abseiling down to the ledge above where it was found.Finding the scrape empty, they sought advice from Llanwrst-born falconer and vet Richard Jones now based at Avian Veterinary Services, Cheshire.
He has worked at a specialist bird rehabilitation facility in the US, and said the chick's best chance of survival was to get it back in the wild.
"Plan B was to try and track down some foster parents as, fortunately, falcons can't count," said Mr Jones, adding peregrine falcons will feed another hungry mouth as "one of their own"  After numerous phone calls to falconers, birdwatchers and wildlife agencies, he spokes with James Leonard from the RSPB who works ringing and monitoring wild peregrines. After numerous phone calls to falconers, birdwatchers and wildlife agencies, he spokes with James Leonard from the RSPB who works ringing and monitoring wild peregrines.
He knew of a number of possible sites and so began a "transport relay team" involving three people covering 300 miles, said Mr Jones.
"Thankfully, because of the quick action and cooperation of all involved the bird has now settled into his new family and, fingers crossed, will fledge with its adopted brothers and sisters in July.

The chick is in a reserve in central Scotland, which is not being named.

  Sad
on the mend
with his new family. He's on the right and no worse for the wear.  clap

Groundhog Day
June 15, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

Do you ever get the feeling you are reliving the same day over and over. No new fledges. Sunshine is doing very well and has no shame returning to the nest ledge for potential meal hand outs. Early in the evening she had a meal delivered by Tiago, on the roof of 120.  A little brown bat flew around the courtyard around the same time. Not a lot activity seen from the unfledged chicks. We decided to leave and check the King St nest site. On our return. Sunshine was sitting on an upper window ledge. This was confirmed by a camera check. She didn’t stay there long as food was delivered to the nest ledge and Sunshine flew off the window ledge and back into the nest ledge. That was about all the excitement for the evening.

We closed the watch for the night at 9p.m.

Gee, that's the biggest nest box I've ever seen, except for a Hack box. Nice pics Paul. Hope the little one does well.

please tell

A few years ago, there was a happy couple in DeMortel. Ma and Pa. They raised many babies, all was good. Suddenly, after Ma laid some eggs and they hatched, an interloper came in and disrupted the whole happy family. Her name was S2, (band numbers). She was a Juvie herself and probably, as we think, took out Ma or chased her. The babies were just so new and Pa was left to raise them. He was doing well bringing in food but......that darn S2 would steal the food right right out of his mouth, right in the nest box. Pa looked perplexed every time. Meanwhile, the babies did not get fed, she stole every catch. The eyases were starving. Pa got an idea, he would catch prey, let S2 take it and he would have a hidden stash which when she was eating, he would use the cache to feed his 3 babies. It worked for a while but one was so weak, he died. This went on for a week or so and S2 would come in the nest and just look at the 2 eyases like, "what are they?" After some time had passed, S2 decided to try and feed the little ones. By this time, they were afraid of her and wouldn't eat. Well when they were hungry enough, they finally took the food from her and she acted like a mom and both raised 2 well-fed healthy eyases. They grew and fledged and the rest is history. She remains there today as a great loving mom. Trust me, if you would have been on KFC back then, it was mayhem over this. We all remember. That's the story.

So cool. I miss my main man (Kaver  wub2 ) but its nice to know that in his children, grandchildren and so on he lives on. He and Mariah are the best of the best. So too are their progeny.

I so agree BC!

Poor Harlequin, always alone at this time of day. Misses momma.

Momma was there a few minutes ago checking on her...probably perched just out of camera range...all is well!

Oh I know Quest is near but Harlie wants her nearer! LOL
