!!! A second pair or a hangout?
June 07, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre
CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 7 to 9th - 2011
A big thank you to John for sending in these photos of the peregrines that he’s been seeing on a very regular basis these days from his office.
We’re all interested to see if this is a second pair of peregrines in Ottawa, or just a hang-out of the Delta pair?
Stay tuned……

!!! Adult, in view
June 12, 2011 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:

This evening walking past King St nest site after closing the Sheraton nest site for the night. A quick glance to the nest ledge and saw no activity. However, one adult was seen sitting in the  centre of the south side  roof edge of 33 Victoria Street. This is not usual for an adult to be sitting in this location.  I checked the maturity of the chicks on June 10th and both had white fluff across their backs. I’ll check the monitor in the morning.

A lazy cool very windy evening.
June 12, 2011 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Mark Nash Reports:

Closed off the watch this evening after endless delays in getting out of Toronto a terrible 5 hour ride down the lake with blustery north west winds and metre high waves. As darkness fell, the two juveniles, - Lady Lamont and Lady Nelson had moved from the edge of the landing platform of the nest box and had disappeared from my view as they retired to the back side of the nest box for the evening. One of the adults had positioned itsself on the lower ledge of the north tower below te nest box and also appeared to have also settled in for the night. Tomorrow, the oldest hatchling is approx. 39 days old.

I took the opportunity at my arrival to check in with the bridge staff and stowed the tent shelter and radios on site for set up in the morning.
Stay tuned……..

Pretty Uneventful, But It Won’t Be Long
June 12, 2011 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:

June 10th – It was pretty uneventful except for the US Steel Workers Protest on the bridge.  Our Peregrines didn’t seem to mind all the flags and people that were about. It was surprising to see the interest that the Steelworkers and their children took in the falcons.  Many had no idea that they even nested on the bridge.  Around 3:00 in the afternoon, Mom caught a pigeon right under the Skyway.  The Steelworks watched in amazement as she took it to a telephone pole across the canal to prepare it.  After taking her share, she made a drop at the nest box.  It was the first time in 3 days that we had seen the juvies get a meal.  However, we are not there 24/7.

We had a visit from MAK and Joyce from Rochester who were on their way to the CPF banding at the Scarborough Yellow Pages site.  It was nice to meet the girls and share our common interest.

June 11th - A very cold and grey day at the Bridge.  Heavy jackets required.  Just a whole lot of wing flapping going on.  I think lift off will be pretty soon.  There is no white down left and they are sure exercising those wings.

It’s very interesting this year with our new Dad Mackenzie.  He is certainly a feisty little guy and he does not shy away from a Pigeon, a Cormorant, a Gull or even a Turkey Vulture.  On several occasions we have seen him trying to teach the gulls and cormorants that they are not to be anywhere near “His” bridge.  The other interesting thing is that he and Mom are hunting in tandem.  It is so interesting to watch.  Sir Adam Beck was never much of a hunter and we never saw him bring in a pigeon.  Mackenzie brings in the pigeons even though it is a struggle for him to manage.

We’re off again.  Hoping that all goes well with the fledge of our girls.

La Tuque in Haute-Mauricie, 3 hours from Montreal and 3 hours from Quebec City... It seems we have here 2 pairs of falcons at least who nest in cliffs but I haven't seen them.

Nice! Would love to see pics of that!

So glad they made it back home safely!!! Linda is awesome and Bruce seems to be the same.  They are kind of used to rescues Wink  (Who could ever forget when Linda stopped a bus headed for Niagara Falls because one of Rhea Mae's babies was perched on top)!

LOL and now they have to rescue our girls. Oh Lily was ready for that bus trip. I remember.  thumbsup

At 09:05am this morning, the male arrived back at the nest with a large fish which was then taken away by the female. Then at 16:09pm this afternoon, he flew in once again with what appeared to be a small pike clutched in his talons. The female appeared to reject the offering and flew off the nest without the fish, followed soon after by 7Y. He then returned the nest, still holding onto the fish at 16:14pm, but did not stay long. Then at 16:17pm, the female landed back on the nest and resumed incubation.

14457  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Birding: On the menu: Rice and ticks on: 12-Jun-11, 07:19:13 AM
Now that the wedding season is upon us, one often hears the dire warning that throwing rice on the happy couple poses a risk for birds. Rice supposedly swells with water in the gut of birds, causing the birds to die

So feel free to shower the happy couple with rice as they depart for their honeymoon. By the way, I have heard similar advice about the dangers of feeding bread to birds, which seems even more absurd.

Yellow Pages Banding Photos are Here!!!
June 11, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
Tracy Simpson Reports:

It was another fantastic banding at the Yellow Pages building today with a great crowd in attendance.  A big thank you to all that attended and helped to name our three newest baby falcons Striker, Jet and Rhiannon.  It was also great to see the crew from Rochester, New York at the banding as Linn, the resident female, was hatched there and the ladies were ecstatic to see that Linn was now celebrating a family of her own right here in Toronto!!  Enjoy the pictures!!

Canada Square Banding Day Photos!!!
June 11, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:

A tremendously exciting day at the Canada Square building at Yonge and Eglinton where three beautiful chicks named Luke, Chester and Buzz were banded.  A big thank you to all that made this fabulous day possible!!  Here are some more pictures of this amazing event.  I was able to get some images of the female taking care of the “villain” and dispatching him from her nest ledge.  The resident female did a fabulous job and Stormin’ took the fantastic crew from Solar Window Washing to task as well.  Enjoy!!
