Banding Day at the Scarborough Yellow Pages nest site. 3 healthy chicks!1
-
Mark Nash Reports:

A very good day indeed at the Yellow Pages nest site! A huge thank you to the management and staff at Yellow Pages for hosting the banding in the lobby for all to see again this year, it was very well attended and a huge success! 3 very healthy chicks were banded this afternoon, 2 males and 1 girl named Striker, Jet, and Rhiannon. Both resident adult peregrine parents were on hand to voice their opinion and defend the nest and the entire event went like clockwork without incident. With a packed lobby of spectators, the three young hatchlings were sexed, banded, named and quickly examined to check their overall health and returned to their parents on the nest ledge after a quick photo shoot, all in record time.

A big thank you to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for all of their support and for banding the young chicks, and to our special visitors from Rochester New York who travelled up from New State to see the banding.

The new resident adult female named Lyn was produced in 2007 in Rochester New York, banded Black 91 over Green V. The resident adult male is still Rueben, produced in 2003 from Wisconsin USA, banded Black 43 over Green M

14493  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Sick attacks on pigeons could be intended to bait peregrine falcons (UK) on: 10-Jun-11, 11:12:46 PM
A PIGEON had its wings glued together and two more were found laced with poison and tied to a quarry ledge.

Police are hunting the sick attackers who may be using the tactic as bait to lure and kill protected birds of prey, such as peregrine falcons, which eat pigeons.

Officers are investigating a motive for the cruelty to the pigeons – and possibly the falcons – after the discoveries at an old quarry in Penmaenmawr over the past few days.

But they are also concerned about the risk to public health from poison.

Sergeant Rob Taylor, North Wales Police wildlife and environment officer, said: “People are putting out tethered pigeons, tied to the ground, with poison on them. Two were found yesterday in an old quarry above Penmaenmawr and another has been found with their wings glued together.

“Laying poison on open land is an offence. It is callous and indiscriminate. If a child picks up one of these pigeons and touches the poison then licks their hand, they could die.â€

Anyone caught and convicted faces up to six months imprisonment under the Environmental Protection Act.

Police say there are legitimate ways to leave poison, for example, for rats in special boxes which only small rodents can get into.

A nesting pair of peregrine falcons lives in the Penmaenmawr area. And Sgt Taylor added: “Whoever is doing this is targeting the peregrines for some reason. We deplore the killing of birds of prey which are legally protected.â€

Peregrines chiefly hunt birds such as starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, jays, shorebirds, and waterfowl, and will even take on mammals, reptiles, and insects. Peregrines may use a variety of hunting techniques, but typically prey is captured in the air after a fast pursuit or a rapid dive.

It is believed to be the fastest animal on earth, having been clocked in diving speeds of up to 90 metres per second.

No motive for covering the pigeons with poison has been found but one theory is that substances such as weedkiller would kill the falcons so that they wouldn’t attack other, valuable, racing pigeons in mid air.

The Royal Pigeon Racing Association condemned the poisoning practice and said that there are legitimate ways to tackle predatory birds of prey such as using Government-allocated licences to control their numbers, or relocation schemes.

RPRA general manager Stewart Wardrop, based in Cheltenham, said: “We don’t condone this sort of behaviour.

“Hawks and birds of prey do take pigeons (in mid air). We are actively lobbying the Government to find ways to control their populations. But they have to be legitimate methods, which may involve applying for a licence from the Government or relocating the birds of prey possibly in partnership with the RSPB, which do not put the public at risk.

“The main way to control the wild bird population is through Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)â€

Anyone finding a tethered pigeon should call North Wales Police on 101 or the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Oh how sick are some people!!

Sunshine 40 days Old
June 10, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

Well today Sunshine is 40 days old and just like any child still is at home.  Not a lot of activity this evening, with burst of mild flapping, but no running of the ledge or excitement from her or the others. Rhea Mae and Tiago stayed in view well into the evening, prompting us to stay until dark. Sunshine finally gave up and went out of our view at 8:45p.m. and Rhea Mae was still on 130 Adelaide when we called it a night.

Rain expected tomorrow.

Friday morning - no fledge
June 10, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Harry Crawford Reports:

7:25am had me at the courtyard, south of the Sheraton.  Two chicks
were visible but there were no adults around.  At 5am, I had all
four chicks on the webcam.  Around 7am, I could only see three of
them.  I started wandering around looking for adults in case there
was a fledge.  I met up with Zoe a few times and she could only see
three on her office computer.  Eventually I found one adult in a
normal location so I stopped searching.

One or two chicks could be seen flapping and running along the nest
ledge.  This still wasn’t the typical amount of activity before a
normal fledge.  Linda and Annie showed up.  I left the site in
Annie’s good hands.  When I got home just after 12pm, I was able to
see all four chicks on the nest ledge [webcam].  It is going to be
soon now.  They are probably waiting for the Rochester Four to get
here to join the weekend watch.

To the folks who managed to get the webcam back online - much
thanks!  Because we are are stretched so thin this year, the webcam is
a critical participant.

Grissom and Rhiannon were the 2 names I submitted in 2004 when asked to name a Kodak falcon. M&K didn't have a daughter named Rhiannon, but now they have a granddaughter that is.

Wonder who submitted that name, very unusual for it to come up twice. LOVE it though. Not your common name, IOW's

Kendal wasn't quite sure what to make of this little winged creature. He cocked his head a few times then...a precious moment happened. He walked over to Harlie and snuggled with him. It was the BEST!!!  heart
