14538  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Peregrine falcon nesting increases in Iowa Newton Daily News on: 08-Jun-11, 10:39:30 PM
DES MOINES — Four peregrine falcon young will be banded today at Des Moines’ American Enterpriseiously.

Peregrine falcons have increased their presence in Iowa, with reports of 16 peregrine falcon territories in the state, an increase from 15 reported in 2010.  Iowa’s first nesting occurred in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids in 1993. The American Enterprise site has produced 46 young falcons since 1993.

A second territory in Des Moines has been established at the state Capitol. Adult peregrines can be observed bringing prey items and feeding young on east side of the Capitol under the north corner of the portico above the stairs.  The female is not banded but the male fledged from the American Enterprise building in 2008.

Before their demise due to DDT, peregrines nested along cliffs in Iowa. The last pair of nesting falcons was reported at Leo’s Cliff near Waukon Junction on the Mississippi River in the 1950s. Today, a peregrine pair has returned to this historic site and is nesting successfully. Cliff-nesting pairs can also be found along the Mississippi near Lansing.

Of the 15 territorial pairs in 2010, ten successful nests produced 22 young. Elsewhere in the Midwest, 193 territories had 166 nesting pairs. Of these, 411 young fledged from 148 successful nesting attempts.

Additional Iowa falcon pairs can be found at McGregor, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Davenport, Burlington, Muscatine and Chillicothe.

The McGregor pair, found at the Bunge Elevator, has successfully nested in a nest box placed at this site 13 years ago. Tentative plans are to band the young at this site on June 11. The public is again invited.

A falconcam has been established at American Enterprise site in Des Moines and may be viewed at www.iowadnr.com/wildlife/diversity/falconcam.html. Also, a nesting pair at the MidAmerican Energy headquarters in Davenport may be viewed by going to www.wqad.com then clicking on News, then on NewsChannel 8 Falcon Cam.
14539  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Weather blamed in falcon chicks' death CBC news Canada on: 08-Jun-11, 10:37:08 PM
Two falcon chicks featured on CBC's live-streaming camera have died and the weather is being blamed.

"We have lost a second chick to the horribly wet weather Brandon has had this spring. It is most likely that the prolonged wet weather and the very young age of the chick was the cause," Tracy Maconachie, a conservation biologist, posted on the comments section of the Falcon Cam page.

Maconachie is the co-ordinator of the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project, which has partnered with CBC to offer the CBC Falcon Cams in Winnipeg since 2006. The Brandon cam was added this year, where Hurricane and Brooklyn are the featured parents.

They had four eggs hatch this year but one of the chicks, the third to break out, died soon after, said Maconachie.

"The chicks are too young to thermoregulate on their own so getting wet and cold is deadly for them," she said.

A handful of rain and wind storms have blown through the Brandon area over the past week and temperatures, for the most part, have been below normal.

"The first chick was in trouble, probably before it completed hatching … and it too hatched during a torrential rainstorm. It looks to have hatched before dawn on June 3rd and died within the first couple of hours," Maconachie said.

As for the second chick, chances are it was the youngest of the four, she added.

"And at three days of age it was affected most by the wet."

Hurricane did her best to shield her chicks, but she isn't large "and with three chicks and a day-long deluge like yesterday, it was going to be almost impossible to keep them perfectly dry and warm," Maconachie said.

'Deaths are unfortunately inevitable with any wild species and all anybody can do, is over-plan for the worst, hang-on through the bad and hope to see the chicks flying come the summer.'—Tracy Maconachie

Like the falcons in Winnipeg, the Brandon birds have access to a nestbox that offers some protection. Hurricane was tucked under the cover of the roof all day on Tuesday "but she and Brooklyn did need to feed [the chicks], at which time there was no way to keep them entirely out of the wind and the rain," Maconachie said.

"Had this been on a ledge on a cliff, none of the chicks would have been likely to survive at this young age," she added.

"Deaths are unfortunately inevitable with any wild species and all anybody can do, is over-plan for the worst, hang-on through the bad and hope to see the chicks flying come the summer."

So far, the four chicks in Winnipeg are doing well, thanks to the efforts of their parents, Princess and Ivy.

"While the rain wasn't nearly as bad in Winnipeg, Princess was taking no chances with her chicks [Tuesday]night even though they are twice as old as the Brandon chicks and much more capable of withstanding bad weather in their much larger nestbox," Maconachie said.

"She had them all piled into a corner and she was using her body as a shield to protect them since they are too large now for her to sit on and keep covered."

Hurricane feeds her three chicks on June 6. One of them died the next day.

Events from the nest:

Since yesterday’s press release relating to this year’s eggs, we have been our female osprey has once again been the subject of a great deal of media attention. This is further testament to the contribution she has made during her 21 years breeding at Loch of the Lowes to the osprey population by raising awareness of this incredible species on an international level. Here, at Loch of the Lowes, we still consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to see this special bird along with her mate, 7Y, nesting on site; despite feelings of disappointment that the eggs are now highly unlikely to hatch.  Our pair of ospreys are now giving us the opportunity to learn what happens when eggs do not hatch by observing their behaviour over the coming weeks. Viewers can still enjoy live footage on our webcam.

Our ospreys continue to incubate the three eggs with our female sitting on the nest throughout the night as usual. At 5.20am, her mate 7Y returned briefly, but did not deliver a fish or take over incubation. An hour later at 6.14am, our female left the nest while at 6.15am our male arrived to incubate for a period, turning the eggs at 6.26am and again at 7.20am and 8.04am. Later in the morning our female returned to the nest and has since incubated throughout the day.At 11.55am she took a short 3 minute break, but returned to continue incubating. At 1.49pm and 3.17pm, she turned the eggs before settling back down to incubate.

While we are disappointed that we are unable to initiate the satellite tracking project this year, it is our intention to progress with this important study next spring. For more information on the future of our satellite tracking project, follow this link: http://www.swt.org.uk/wildlife/ospreys-at-lowes/osprey-tracking/

June 08, 2011 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Dennis Patrick Reports:

Where do I start???? Monday, June 6th was such a wonderful day. First I would like to say a big Thank You to Centerline Equipment Rental and Sure Seal Roofing for their continued support. Also, Dan Reaume, Chris and John from the Ambassador Bridge Company. Mark and Marion Nash from CPF. Pud Hunter, our Bander and Catherine and Stephanie who assisted Pud with the banding. I’m sure I’m missing someone but stay tune for more details and pictures when Dennis has the time to do the reporting. I hope I did the correct spelling for the female name. Both of the young ones were healthy and loved it when I spritzed them with a little water. It’s amazing how that calms them down. Thank you everyone, it’s a great thing for Windsor to see the interest in these beautiful creatures that are now on the Ambassador Bridge. If you would like to volunteer to watch these birds please email us at wpfw2011@gmail.com
