!!! Banding Day!
June 04, 2011 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
Kathy Reports:

Yesterday was banding day for our little threesome!  Angel was her usual fierce self and Jack did show up a few times to cheer mom on and give her some vocal support.

All three weighed 700 grams and all were estimated to be 27 days old.   Because they fell in the 650-750 range it took a bit of measuring to determine between female and male although vocalizations or lack thereof certainly added to the final verdict!

We have two girls - Skye and Hera, both of who seemed to have inherited their mother’s vocal powers!  And our quiet one was deemed to be male and named Jupiter!

A friend of a friend wrote me and said she had 2 baby Robins she found. These do NOT look like Robins. Anyone know what they are? Here I'm giving her tips how to feed baby Robins, then she sends me the pic. I told her to take them to a wildlife rehab. Thanks if someone can tell me so I can tell her.

2011 Peregrine falcon season

G-3

The three Peregrine falcon chicks that hatched at our G-3 nesting box this year were banded on Friday, May 27, on-site. Bob Anderson from the Raptor Resource Project and his assistants joined Dairyland’s John Thiel, Brad Foss, Mike Peters and Mike Rask to apply U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) bands to the two females and one male.

The chicks were named Six Cents (in memory of Penny Schieber), MISO and Edwiki. They are the product of the same Peregrine falcon pair that nested at G-3 last year, Lucas and Jezebel.

Unfortunately, as of June 1, one of the falcon chicks (likely Edwiki) was found to be deceased.

Banding of the chicks at the Alma area nesting site is planned for June 7. Again this year, the falcon pair in Alma has chosen to relocate to a natural nesting site on a bluff near our Alma Generating Station.

!!! King St. Banding a Hit
June 03, 2011 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:

Today was the big day for our two peregrine hatchlings at 18 King St. East.

Here is a brief outline of today’s event with much more detailed information and photos to follow as soon as it is made available.

Mark Nash of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation emceed the event with many tenants, dedicated volunteers and The Toronto Council Fire of the Native Cultural Centre, were in attendance to see these wonderful birds.

The weather could not have been better. Clear skies, warm temps  and light winds made for the perfect day.

As the swing stage made it way to the nest ledge, both peregrine adults made sure of their territory with swoops and stoops and vocalizations.

Two young ones were temporarily removed from the  nesting area to be banded by Mark Heaton, Senior Biologist of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

One female and one male both received identification bands placed on the left leg. While a silver US wildlife band was placed on the right leg of both birds.

Full of white downy fluff, the two tolerated the painless banding very well with little vocalization. They were given names provided by a school children in Japan in memory of the devastating earthquake and Tsunami that occured a few months ago.

Many thanks to Sandra Celli of Avison and Young, along with Slate Properties for being long time guardians of the historical 18 King St. nest  site. Special thanks to John Mederios  for his unending support for the volunteers.

Does that mean their names are Earthquake & Tsunami?  ???
14669  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Snowy owl rescued in Anchorage to be released outside Barrow on: 04-Jun-11, 06:25:02 AM
On admission, the snowy owl showed no signs of injury or trauma but had a very thin keel (an extension of the breastbone), which is indicative of starvation. So the volunteers who staff the facility began a very careful re-feeding program that allowed the snowy owl to gradually gain weight and strength.

Too bad about the Buffalo chicks.  Sad Is there a reason they waited so long? Just sayin! Love the names of the others..especially Phoebe Snow. I remember when I was a kid, we'd watch that train go by all the time down by us. Congrats!!
