Finally after almost 4 hours, she's back
14988  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 19-May-11, 07:14:16 AM

I keep remembering that we'd know a hatch was imminent when Kaver would be on the eggs at night...

I remember, he was always willing....anytime.

Maybe Beauty couldn't sleep with all the noise coming from the eggs and made Archer deal with it!!  devil

You are lookin’ goooooooooooooood!

What a difference a week, a couple of days, a day or even an hour makes with this little one - well, not so little – anymore.

Can I honestly I tell you I had huge doubts we’d ever get to this point?  Okay, thanks for letting me tell you.

We are at the stage where it looks like pin feathers are starting to come in.   The awkward stage where gangliness and the 1920′s racoon coat look are so popular with a 2-week old or so falcon chick.  The belly looks like an expanding rubber balloon and the feet jut out in front of the chick to provide the balance it needs.

I don’t know if we have a male or female yet.  It’s hard to say when you don’t have siblings to compare it to.  We should know at banding time.

Meanwhile, devoted KathyQ and Kinney care for their little one with so much TLC.  One pic shows KathyQ feeding it and the other shows Kinney spending just a few seconds of quality time with it.  I wonder if the chick will ever want to leave the Market Tower Falcon Bed & Breakfast – personal one-on-one service of food delivery and cuddling.  I also know the little one must be doing very well as I would bet that it is the one responsible for the new poo curtain.

14990  Other Nature Related Information / Raptor Web Cams / Webcam captures struggling B.C. eaglet British Columbia on: 19-May-11, 06:41:20 AM
A baby eagle in B.C. whose birth was watched by thousands of people online has run into some trouble, and a webcam has been capturing it all.

The eaglet, nicknamed Flyer, is one of three babies in a nest in Sidney on Vancouver Island that hatched just a few weeks ago.

Last week, the largest of the chicks appeared to be struggling as though its foot or leg was snagged on something.

Days later, the baby is still stuck and fishing line may be the culprit, according to the Hancock Wildlife Foundation, which has put five cameras near nests around the province.

"Almost every eagle nest has fish line in it because it's naturally attached to a lot of the fish they find. They're wounded incapacitated fish -- perfect food for eagles," said biologist David Hancock.

Hancock believes the eaglet freed itself once and then got caught up again on Saturday.

The foundation wants to come to Flyer's rescue but the dead tree where the nest is located is not safe to climb. A giant crane is required to get to the top but the wet ground is too soft for heavy machinery.

"If over the next couple of weeks it dries out then this big crane will get on there and it's quite possible this chick will survive that," Hancock said.

The foundation has intervened in nests in the past, but is hesitant to for fear the birds would abandon the site.

"They'll never abandon their young, but they may go and move to another nest next year," Hancock said.

More than 1.5 million people watched the webcams last year to check on the eagles.

See live streams from the Hancock Wildlife Foundation's eagle cameras here.

I thought it sounded like an adult in the distance.
OK weird, Ei did you get the whole beginning? It was too petite to be an adult. IMHO! Guess we're debating this.

I didn't start recording until what you hear.  We may debate it, and the recording may not sound like the eggs, but hearing it live I am absolutely convinced it wasn't an adult off camera.

When I first heard it, not actually watching, I thought it was little birdies chirping by the nest. That's what it sounded like. It did NOT sound like a falcon in the distance. I thought no way, no bird is going to come by the nest and when I looked, the eggs were alone. I'm with Ei, it was a whole different sound.
14993  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Now / Re: Can eggs talk? on: 18-May-11, 08:45:28 PM
Well, technically the egg isn't talking, it's the soon-to-be hatched eyas inside the egg.   2funny

OK, maybe it's the egg.   devil

To cheep, or not to cheep?  That is the question.

or is it

To pip, or not to pip?  that is the question.

Sorry, that was "cheap", but we all do want an answer!
 Wink

Didn't anyone watch the Little Rascals?? Of course Eggs talk, they talked to the ham.

14995  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 18-May-11, 07:28:48 PM
To me it sounds more like Archer vocalizing nearby off camera.

Maybe he was giving his new Harley a test spin.
I wasn't watching & the sound wasn't one I've heard before-I'm going with my opinion, seeing Archer come in at the end

Funny Ei, how we both heard the same and posted it. I swear it was the eggs also!
