Update of female

The female was studied.
It did not die from poisoning or infection, but probably from heart and circulatory failure. This death is not uncommon in birds.

Oh gee, this is so sad! Thank you Annette.

Despite the rain, the Peregrine bandings went well today both at UT and the Commodore Perry.

At UT there were three females and one male.  The male was named Harold and the females were named Myrtle, Unity and Layla.

Found this online, banding was May 26, 2009.

As parents of the Toledo area’s biggest peregrine falcon brood this year, The University of Toledo’s resident adult pair, Belle and Allen, could claim this year’s crown — if they weren’t so busy feeding the four voracious offspring who received their names and leg bands last Tuesday.

A team from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) again navigated the winding approach to the top of University Hall Tower where the peregrines’ nesting box is situated. With the parents wheeling and swooping overhead, the four young falcons were tucked into blanket sacks and carried to a mobile banding station ODNR set up next to the Student Union. Protected from the morning’s cold drizzle, the three-week-old birds were fitted with identification bands and had their blood drawn for genetic testing, providing vital stats for the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, where all North American birds of prey are registered.

The peregrines’ relative sizes made sexing easy, and the three large females and one smaller male were given names picked by UT employees and the Toledo Naturalists Association, the latter choosing to honor noted ornithologist Harold Mayfield and longtime association member Myrtle Sarver. Unity and Leela rounded out the quartet’s monikers.

Once the newest members of UT’s peregrine family were returned to the nest, ODNR loaded up their vehicles to band three chicks at the Commodore Perry nest in downtown Toledo. The two eggs at the Bay Shore Power Plant nest in Oregon will require a future visit.

Belle and Allen have so far produced nine young; this year’s chicks will be learning to fly within two or three weeks. The process of going airborne has its risks, so if you happen to see a young peregrine down, call Grounds at 419.530.1011 so UT personnel can return the fledging flier to the safety of the nest.

Could be her!!

15083  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / 55 Baby Falcons Born Outside NUMC Since 1997 on: 13-May-11, 09:44:17 PM
Every year for the past 15 years a feathery couple has given birth to four baby birds outside the Nassau University Medical Center.

But this year’s hatching surprised everybody because a fifth baby bird was born on the 17th floor ledge, brining the total number of birds born outside the hospital to 55.

The proud parents, Meadow and Brook, named after the Meadowbrook parkway, aren’t just any regular birds. They are peregrine falcons.

They first arrived in 1997 and were given a 3 x 4 box to help hatch their eggs. And ever since the hospital provided them with that box, they haven’t stopped adding to the family.

State environmental officials visit the ledge around the same time every year to place a band on each of the four birds to track their whereabouts because they are on the endangered species list. So when officials climbed up to the box this Friday, they were surprised to find one extra baby falcon.

The additional tiny falcon put a hitch in the hospital’s plan to name the four birds after the four members of the music group, Black Eyed Peas. But the hospital quickly solved that problem by giving the fifth newborn the title of group manager.

Unlike their parents, the Nassau University Medical Center will only be a temporary residence for will.i.am, Fergie, Taboo, apl.de.ap, and their manager. The young group of falcons will migrate elsewhere once they learn how to fly.

All 5 Peregrine Falcon Eggs Infertile

COLUMBUS -- All five Peregrine Falcon eggs laid in a nest high up on 41st floor of the Rhodes State Office Tower in downtown Columbus turned out to be infertile, ABC6/FOX28 News learned Friday.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports that the mother had abandoned the eggs late last week.

Falcon Expert Donna Daniel, who maintains the online Ohio Peregrine Falcon blog, says she went up to check to if the eggs were fertile and discovered they were not.

Apparently, with the falcon mother being so young, such an instance is common.   heart heart heart heart heart

As she pulled bales off the hay stack, she found two fuzzy owlets peering up at her.

!!! Ottawa is down on eggs!
May 12, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre
CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received news from Eve Ticknor that the pair have finally gone down onto incubation! Eve reports that their resident female “Diana”is well hidden, behind a pillar, 2 down from the northwest corner. Sadly, because of the pillars, we will have no way to count eggs nor to tell just when the hatch takes place. It will be a different kind of Falcon Watch this year.

Still in the area
May 12, 2011 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital
Linda Woods Reports:

Hunter and Ranger have not put down a new clutch of eggs as yet. Today the pair were seen sitting on the condo towers on Bay St around 1p.m.  Local watcher said, she has seen them on other buildings for short periods of time. This information may indicate that they are not attempting to put down more eggs at this time. We’ll continue to monitor this pair of falcons.

The Fab Four morning feed
- Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

I arrived in time for the first time to see a feed. I quickly grabbed my camera and crossed my fingers that equipment was not obstructing my camera view. WONDERFUL! I also captured some live video. So sweet, but I don’t know what is causing them to look toward the wall. Perhaps the shadow of Tiago flying past the nest ledge.

Late this afternoon I checked the web cam and a split second I caught the second image. The little one looking directly at the camera.

Hmmm, I wonder if they know we are watching

Great Pic Linda, thanks!
