Eggs Alone
Unfortunately, things continue to deteriorate at the nest. For the majority of yesterday afternoon, overnight and now this morning the eggs have been uncovered. Further, Durand has been away from the ledge more than she has been present.

Earlier this morning she was observed scraping in the corner of the nestbox. This is typical site-bonding behavior that normally occurs prior to nesting and again later in summer after the young have fledged. The fact that she is exhibiting this behavior now is another indication of shifting hormone levels. Even though we categorize these actions as "abnormal" at this stage in the nesting cycle, in actuality abnormal actions can be the norm with a bird that is not yet fully mature as in Durand's case.

We will give her a little more time and continue to observe what transpires. If things stay on this track then in the coming days the eggs will be pulled and examined to determine fertility.

5 eggs and no hatches this year.  Sad

She sits on the cam but not the eggs. Where her mate is, is anyone's guess.
There is speculation by some that the male is no longer in the territory as he has not been seen via the Falconcams for several days. While it is possible he is still around but just not in front of the cameras, certainly if it were the case that he is gone, Durand would definitely need to leave the nest for longer periods of time in order to hunt for herself, especially if the cached supplies of food are depleted. Were she fending for herself she would need to eat twice a day or so, however, she is leaving the eggs much more frequently than that.

I received a phone call from Nora in Iowa last night, telling me that she, her Border Collie, his leash and a squirrel had a major set to, and she now has a badly fractured ankle...  She was taken by ambulance to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (MN), had it set and casted and is home now, but is a seriously not happy camper...  I'm sure she would love to receive some "Get Dancing Soon" posts from all her many friends here on rfalcomcam, to cheer her up!!

Thanks a lot!  And let me be the first to say, "Nora, we love you -- please heal quickly!!

Anne in Toronto

Oh my, how awful for Nora, she's not a sit-a-rounder and do-nothing-er. Heal well Nora and soon you'll be kickin it again!.

15158  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Texas Fish Farm and Owner Charged with Killing Brown Pelicans on: 10-May-11, 06:41:14 AM
Seaside Aquaculture Inc., a fish farm located in Palacios, Texas, and its owner Khan Vu have been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegally killing approximately 90 brown pelicans, United States Attorney José Angel Moreno recently announced.

The indictment, returned Wednesday, April 27, 2011, alleges that Vu and Seaside Aquaculture Inc. did knowingly kill migratory nongame birds, that is, approximately 90 Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) without being permitted to do so from on or about Feb. 1, 2010, until on or about Feb. 1, 2011, in violation of The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).

The MBTA provides protection for Migratory Birds. The MBTA prohibits, unless permitted by regulations, to "pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture or kill, possess, offer for sale, sell, offer to purchase, purchase, deliver for shipment, ship, cause to be shipped, deliver for transportation, transport, cause to be transported, carry, or cause to be carried by any means whatever, receive for shipment, transportation or carriage, or export, at any time, or in any manner, any migratory bird, included in the terms of this Convention . . . for the protection of migratory birds . . . or any part, nest, or egg of any such bird." These rules attempt to maintain an equitable balance between protection and preservation of migratory birds and recreational opportunities afforded through sport hunting. The brown pelican is a non-game migratory bird as defined in Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 10.23.

Vu voluntarily surrendered and has made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Brian Owsley in Corpus Christi and was ordered released upon posting $50,000 bond. A summons has issued directing a representative of the corporation, Seaside Aquaculture, appear for arraignment on May 9, 2011. Vu faces a fine of not more than $15,000 or a maximum six-month prison term or both. Seaside Aquaculture Inc. faces a similar fine.

The case was investigated by agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hugo R. Martinez.

Just so long as she was relocated. I wouldn't put it past these so called people to do something worse. Of course they didn't write down band numbers. Then there would be evidence of what they were doing. This being legal is highly questionable in my book.

I'm surprised she didn't find her way back! Look at Mariah?

!!! We Have a Hatch at William Osler!!!!
May 09, 2011 - Etobicoke - William Osler
Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey was on-site today at the William Osler Hospital and was able to gain access to the mechanical room peep hole for a check up on the resident adults and their clutch of eggs.  To his delight, the resident female stood up to reposition herself and there was a newly hatched chick in view.  Bruce puts the hatch date as yesterday or last night.  A huge thank you to the staff and security at the William Osler Hospital for all of their support and congratulations to them on their very first hatch!!!!

Still Awaiting a Hatch at MEC.
May 09, 2011 - Mississauga - Executive Centre
Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey was on-site today at the Mississauga Executive Centre for a check up on the incubating adult pair and their three eggs.  A quick look at the monitor revealed that there has yet to be a hatch at this site.  The resident pair is certainly working hard on incubating and caring for the eggs and we will continue to check back regularily for a hatch.  Check back soon as it could be any day now!!!

Site Check In at Holcim
May 09, 2011 - Mississauga - Holcim
Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce Massey was on-site today at Holcim in Mississauga and from his period of observation, he could not detect any adults birds.  There certainly was activity at this site over the past few weeks of a territorial pair but Bruce was unable to locate a ledge of interest.  Has this pair settled in somewhere?  Check back soon as we will be keeping a close eye on this site for any signs of nesting activity!!

!!! Behaviour Change, fine weather or a Hatch?
May 09, 2011 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:

Back to the monitor this morning. The Adult female did not move to show me a thing. She was a little more unsettled on the nest today. Perhaps the warm weather has her at ease.

This afternoon a return visit to the monitor. Forgot it’s all in shade and very difficult to see anything until the sun is off the while building across the street. The camera lens reacts to reflective light, thus the lens is reacting to the bright sunlight reflecting off the building. The male did make an appearance on the nest ledge. He sat there for  a while then gingerly approached the female from behind. He stood there for a few minutes, but the female totally ignored him and did not move an inch. He eventually flew off. She did get up and adjust the eggs and I wasn’t quite sure if I saw a little white fluff,or just the white of her chest feathers. I’ll check again tomorrow .

!!! Adult peregrines remain in the area
May 09, 2011 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital
Linda Woods Reports
:

Reports coming in are stating that the  resident pair remain in the area and are seen roosting on both the Hospital and adjacent buildings. Closer observations will be needed to watch for potential new nesting behaviour and/or a new clutch of eggs.

Love the pic and what a success fostering #5!  Kudos to Chris for a job well done!

And for taking good care of the Owlettes when the ants invaded. Not many cam owners would do that.   bow
