From KFC member Christiane

Question. . .

Could Beauty have another location that she could have laid her eggs or could
she lose an egg along the way? Also, not to alarm, but this afternoon when
Beauty was moving all around the nextbox checking different locations, I noticed
the area in the daylight that had a bump, spot or whatever seemed to be a larger
and a bit more spread out darker area; maybe it doesn't mean anything. I had
wondered that maybe B & A sensed something, wasn't right and didn't sit on the
egg sooner but I was very happy today when they both took turns brooding for
longer periods. Just asking; maybe others ha similar thoughts?

Our resident male and female have continued mating throughout the day and we are all hopeful of seeing eggs in the near future.  We have also seen 7Y bringing in sticks and both Ospreys have been adding to the nest.  Ospreys build up the sides of their nest during the start of the breeding season to protect the eggs from rolling out the nest.  In the happy event of chicks hatching the adults will start to flatten the nest out, giving the chicks more room as they grow and a platform to fledge from.

The Ospreys residing at Loch of the Lowes are situated in a great location. They have all the resources they need in terms of fish, using the lochs locally and occasionally travelling as far as the River Tay to catch salmon.   clap

Ever since Lola walked out on him (or, um, died), Pale Male hasn't been the same red tailed hawk we all fell in love with lo those many years ago; he's stopped grooming his talons, he's been drinking more, and he spends his days at the track and his nights in the clubs. As if the boozing, womanizing and squirrel-chasing weren't enough, he's got some serious baby mama trouble now.

After Lola disappeared, Pale Male hooked up with feisty, dark-haired Ginger; after a few weeks though, that relationship collapsed, and she left the park. Then Pale Male met his Mia Farrow, Pale Beauty (in this analogy, Lola was Diane Keaton, and Ginger was Stacey Nelkin). However, Ginger has come back into the picture suddenly, and now, she is sitting on Pale Beauty's egg!

"We have all these images of birds being monogamous and loving couples because our ideal couples are often birds. But the reality is that birds have very messy lives...Birds have extramarital affairs, and they lay eggs in other birds' nests," said Glenn Phillips, executive director of New York City Audubon. Hey buddy, nobody is married here, hawks are more enlightened than that. Pale Male is just having his mid-flight crisis...or he's turning into the Charlie Sheen of hawks (#notsoaring). We're just nervous about what happens when that egg hatches—will Pale Male meet his Soon Yi Preven?

15867  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Kansas Falcons driven out by new couple. Westar Energy on: 07-Apr-11, 06:45:12 AM
Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Westar Energy's well-known peregrine falcon couple, Hope and Doorly, who have nested atop Westar Energy’s general office, 818 S. Kansas Ave in downtown Topeka since 2004, have encountered trouble over the past couple of weeks as intruders from Lincoln, Nebraska competed for their nest.

Westar Energy employees reported hearing increased vocalization around the general office during that timeframe. “Peregrines interact more through vocalization than they do with physical contact,” said Brad Loveless, director, biology & conservation program. “A lot of it was probably over competition,” he added. The newcomer peregrine couple, Nemaha and Boreas, successfully overtook the nest in late March.

Boreas, male, was born in 2007, and Nemaha was born in 2009. Both peregrines were raised at the Nebraska State Capitol.

Peregrines typically migrate to South America in the winter and return to North American to nest in the spring. “If they have not nested before, they will keep a lookout for possible nests. Boreas and Nemaha, most likely spotted the Topeka nest on their way back from migration,” said Loveless.

Soon after claiming the nest, Nemaha laid her first egg on April 1, 2011, exactly a year after Hope laid her first egg of the 2010 nesting season. “Nemaha has now laid a second egg and we expect more to follow in a couple of days,” said Loveless. “Females commonly lay about four eggs a year over the course of two to two and a half days,” added Loveless.

The whereabouts of Hope and Doorly, who are also Nebraska natives, are currently unknown. Loveless said that a male peregrine was calling this morning in downtown Topeka. “It could have been Doorly, or it could have been the young male who hatched last spring,” he added, noting that genders are distinguished by size, with males approximately 50% smaller than females.

Loveless arranged for the installation of another nest box at Tecumseh Energy Center (TEC), Tecumseh, Kansas, in hopes that Hope and Doorly would see it from high in the air in downtown Topeka and make it their new home. He credits TEC folks for creative, fast-acting fabrication and installation of this second nest box. The TEC folks will be keeping an eye out for new activity.

The public is welcome to view a live stream of the new falcon family by visiting Westar Energy’s website www.WestarEnergy.com/Greenteam.

Hi Russ and welcome. Most of us here followed Amelia. I was smitten by her and was very sad when she disappeared. I had to write to them a few times to ask them to please update their news feed about the falcons. Last year they had eggs and didn't even know when they were laid. We pretty much had to tell them. I also asked if they could put a nice lid on the box so the falcons would be out of the elements, hence, (Amelia one year, buried in snow up to her beak). She kept those eggs warm through out. Glad your on board and maybe YOU can update us as things progress. Thanks for the info. Good luck!
