More on Egg #2 Including Video Links
Here is a YouTube video of Durand laying the 2nd egg yesterday. Fast forward to 2:40 for what appears to be the actual moment. And, here is another version of the event saved by Pascal watching from The Netherlands.

Thanks to all of the fans out there watching and capturing these moments and sharing so everyone can review if they were not able to catch it live.
OK, so some may be wondering why did she lay the second egg in a different location? Actually, she did not lay #2 in a different spot. Both eggs were laid in the same scrape, on the right side of the box as we see it via the camera but the first egg has been moved to the left since it was first laid on Sunday. It is likely before the clutch is complete that she will gather the eggs together into the scrape of choice in which she will incubate. This is a first time nesting attempt for Durand thus she has no actual experience going through this process. However, instinct is very strong and dictates what they do. More times than not things work out the way they should.

I think it will be interesting to see in which part of the nestbox she decides to incubate. Right now she seems to favor that back right corner. If I recall correctly, each year since the late 1990s when we 1st had the camera showing the nestbox no peregrines have ever used that back corner of the box to incubate. One reason may be that in previous years when there has been more than one scrape, prior to the nesting season (usually in late February) I have smoothed out the gravel and made one prominent scrape in the best viewing spot in front of the camera. In the past the nesting falcons have always taken to the scrape I made. This year I did not smooth the gravel as I described. Is this the explanation of why the falcons are using a different spot in the nestbox? Who knows! Regardless it is something interesting to ponder while we wait.

Archer likes to EGG sit too!

Friday morning my daughter and I are headed to Rochester. We will be staying until Monday morning. I will personally tell Beauty our concerns about her 2nd egg, (if it hasn't arrived by then). We will be bunking with MAK and Sue, (thanks girls). We are also going to search out Bobbie from Ireland. I will be on my 1st watch Saturday morning, with MAK. Looking forward to meeting who ever!  wave Hope I see lots of A & B.

Well well well, where did we leave off here?

Apologies to dedicated followers of this blog, I left you hanging for quite a while. No offense was intended by this, as I've explained to many of you in person, life went way off the rails and at the same time I didn't have any definitive falcon info to pass along.

As of now, two adults are regularly being seen around the building. There were 3 including a juvie up until sometime in September (as far as I recall), but I didn't manage to ID any of them so nothing got reported.

Within the past week I managed to capture some shots of two adults one frigid morning at the old/original nest ledge. I knew one was Mom, but had to wait quite a while for the other one to lift his leg so I could ID him. Guess who... no big surprise, it was Jack.

In the months to come, I will definitely keep you posted on any developments with the falcons, but perhaps in a less frequent way than in the past. If/when courting/mating begin, I will try to monitor and report.

At the same time, I would greatly appreciate if those who have eyes, ears, and optics, could share in the monitoring process, I don't always appreciate being the one person monitoring the birds.

Lastly, I don't know how things will work out this year, but I am hopeful that the "falcon workgroup" created last year will re-emerge and help with the tasks carried out through the nesting season. It worked out smoothly and effectively last year, hopefully this approach can be used again. We know now a lot of what to expect, and are more comfortable with the process, as usual all volunteer efforts are helpful and appreciated.

All the best in 2011 and I'll do my best to keep you posted on any developments here at the nest site.

I thought of Dori and Louie too..everyone said they wouldn't hatch but they did and pretty sure there was at least a 2 week interval between the time the eggs were laid and full time incubation started!  I remember watching Louie lay on those 2 eggs every night and then pushing them over to Dori's eggs..insisting they be incubated by her.  I don't think anyone who watched wasn't in tears when they all hatched.

I didn't follow them closely, but I had tears then too...OK, now too...  crying

Oh that was sad, my heart pounded reading that. It happens, we just don't like it.  Sad
