!!! First Egg Toronto Sheraton
March 26, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

A wonderful surprise this morning when the first egg for the 2011 Sheraton Centre was discovered. Tiago held tight to the nest tray and after about an hour waiting he finally got up and revealed the first egg of the nesting season.

Rhea Mae flew to the ledge but did not come to the tray while I was there.

Expect the second egg Monday or Tuesday

Cuyahoga Falls -- Are peregrine falcons making a reappearance in the city?

Jennifer L. Norris, the state-wide peregrine falcon project coordinator, says "occasional sightings" of peregrine falcons at the Cathedral of Tomorrow on State Road have interest piqued.

"We are keeping an eye on the site," Norris reports, "with hopes that the pair that we observed there last year will decide to nest at that location or nearby this year." Norris is a wildlife research biologist with the Olentangy Wildlife Research Station for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

She says staffers verify reported sightings, performing a vital service to the program. By keeping track of sightings and resightings, Norris says "I can monitor the birds' home ranges and where they are traveling to, as well as estimate survival."

Norris can do this because she annually bands juvenile falcons. One band features a unique identification number on it -- "like a bird Social Security number," she says -- and the other is color-coded to indicate where the bird is from. In addition to the re-sightings of individual birds, Norris and her staff monitor each known nest, egg and the juvenile's survival

"Peregrine falcons are threatened in the state," Norris says, "so this monitoring is important to the management of the species."

You can learn more about peregrine falcons by visiting the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website at ohiodnr.com.

16108  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / 24/7 watch to protect falcon eggs (Scotland) on: 27-Mar-11, 10:33:48 PM
27 Mar 2011

They are fierce, they are famed as the fastest creatures on earth, and now they are under 24/7 surveillance.

A pair of peregrine falcons nesting at the Falls of Clyde nature reserve in New Lanark has been put under constant guard to protect their eggs from thieves, and their chicks from human predators.

The stakeout is being launched this weekend by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, as the first eggs have been laid. A team of 30 volunteers will maintain a round-the-clock watch on the nest to make sure it is not disturbed.

According to Tom Hall, the trust’s peregrine protection officer, the birds faced a real threat. Last year a wildlife criminal was caught in Birmingham airport attempting to smuggle peregrine eggs abroad, he said.

“Thankfully the stolen eggs were saved, and Falls of Clyde eventually became the home of three of the chicks to hatch from them,” he added.

“For the next three months, our peregrine nest will never be without a pair of vigilant eyes watching over it.”

The peregrines, which mate for life, will also be able to be viewed online at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s website, thanks to a live “nest cam” feed. Visitors to the hide at the Falls of Clyde can see the show on a large-screen TV.

The peregrine guard has been funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery. “We are thrilled the money we raise can go to such an important and worthwhile cause,” said Clara Govier, the lottery’s head of charities.

There are only about 1400 pairs of peregrine falcons left in the UK, because many were poisoned in the 1950s by the pesticide, DDT. It made eggshells thinner, making it more difficult for the birds to reproduce.

The United Kingdom is home to one-fifth of the European Union’s total breeding population of falcons, and about two thirds of them are in Scotland.

Their wingspan stretches up to 100cm, and their eyesight is at least eight times better than humans.

Peregrines are said to be the fastest living creatures, capable of diving at speeds of 200mph to catch the small birds that are their prey. Their talons strike with so much force that their victims’ heads often break off.  scared blue

16109  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Peregrine falcons vicious predators that do not belong in the city limits on: 27-Mar-11, 10:31:17 PM
My, aren’t we all just thrilled that the peregrine falcons have arrived back in Fargo (Forum, March 19).

Well, I for one am not. The falcons have been given free boarding at the Bank of the West rooftop so that all those who want access to them don’t have to get their feet dirty climbing an appropriate lodging in the woods, which is where they belong, not in the city limits.

These are vicious predators. They do not sing a melodious beautiful song. If you have one flying in your neighborhood looking for prey, you can forget about having any robins, sparrows, hummingbirds, bluebirds, doves, etc. They will disappear.

How do I know? It happened on my block last year. I never saw another bird after the falcons arrived.

Why do I sound angry? Because I am. I have a small dog that was almost a victim of a falcon last year. I am a responsible pet owner. I put up a fence to keep her home. Now in order to keep her safe, I have to be aware that she could be attacked from the air. She can’t be free to run at will. Is that fair?

I have had conversations with our honorable Judge Wickham Corwin, but he brushed my comments aside because he thinks I am confused with what I saw. I guess his eyes are the only ones that matter.

I have talked to the Audubon Society and they are reconsidering their opinions about falcons living in populated areas. Smart people.

I am sure the family who lost their pet in the Island Park area to the falcons agree with my feelings. How many more small pets have disappeared without any knowledge to what happened? Can you imagine the horror they felt to know their beloved pet was being torn apart by the falcons? You certainly wouldn’t want to put a baby on a blanket on the grass in your own yard and leave it for even a moment.  stupid

These are predators. If you feel as I do, let your opinions be heard and don’t be put off by anyone saying you don’t know what you saw or know.

Coon lives in Fargo.
