16204  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / More than 150 swans killed during cold weather UK on: 24-Mar-11, 07:33:35 AM
More than 150 swans have died in Berkshire following an infection made worse by the severe cold weather.

The mute swans have been found dead this year on the Thames at Windsor, Reading, Maidenhead and Newbury.

Eton-based Swan Lifeline said it was the first time it has seen deaths from necrotic enteritis (NE), a bacterial disease made worse by cold weather.

Wendy Hermon from the charity said: "It's just so sad, we're picking up swans we've known for years."

Post-mortem examinations carried out by Defra showed that the swans were infected by a range of diseases, including duck virus enteritis (DVE), a seasonal infection which normally occurs between March and June.

Mrs Hermon said a combination of NE and DVE had made the mortality rate worse.

"It's unbelievable," she said, "we'd go out finding three or four swans floating on the water.

The mute swan is the largest and heaviest water bird in the British Isles
"All the years I've worked here I've never seen anything like it. It's just so upsetting".

On March 16, the first egg was laid. Not sure how many now. This was the site where the drama happened last year. The fight and the intruder was driven off. No eggs hatched.

16212  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Birds released back into wild on: 23-Mar-11, 11:03:27 PM
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- A wild Peregrine falcon was released back into the wild last week by officials from the Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation Project.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources officer Kevin Williams found the bird in a field near Grundy Center last October with a broken wing tip.

Officials noted that the falcon did not have a band, which meant he was born in the wild. He was released from the yard of Linda Nebbe, a rehabber with the group.

The group also released a saw-whet owl, rehabbed at McBride Raptor Center, based at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids. The owl was released in Cedar Falls because of a known colony of similar owls at George Wyth State Park.

The saw-whet came from Muscatine County with nerve damage to one wing, and is now recovered.

16213  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / It's official: The peregrine falcons of downtown Jackson are expecting again on: 23-Mar-11, 10:57:13 PM
For the second year in a row, rare peregrine falcons are breeding in downtown Jackson.

Big Red, the female that hatched three young falcons last spring, laid an egg Wednesday morning in a stony nest high on the County Tower Building.

A strong possibility exists that more falcon eggs will be laid in coming days.

Big Red, a 3-year-old Chicago native, and her male mate, Chayton, who hatched in Toledo in 2007, will tend to their egg or eggs for roughly six weeks until hatching.

Nest watchers can view the site via a live Internet video feed that went online Wednesday.

The video link — Jackson County MI Falcon Cam — was installed by the Jackson County Information Technology Department.

My notes from 2010-03/22 RM sleeping in nestbox.  03/23 first egg early AM

Alrighty then...who knows what's in there. Not a good night for an egg but she will do what she has to do to keep it safe.
