Saw this on the Osprey nest. Look at that face!!

I can't open the original Blackwater thread, so I had to start a new topic. I tried for a week to click on the old topic and it just won't open.

EDIT: We fixed the problem. -Shaky

http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos/yellow_NOCA.htm Now this is interesting and very pretty for a mutation!

Subject: RPT: Yellow pigmented Northern Cardinal

Thanks to Kate Heyden with Ky Dept of Fish and Wildlife Resources for
forwarding along pictures of the *neatest* bird I've seen in a long time ... a
yelllow-pigmented Northern Cardinal! The photos were taken by David Gourley,
who lives in Boyle County. He and his wife have seen the bird at their feeders
several times since January 20th. I sent the photos to bird pigment expert, Dr.
Geoffrey Hill of Auburn University. Some may recall Dr. Hill gave a couple of
nice programs to the Ky Ornithological Society a few years ago. He said this is
a very rare mutuation; he published a paper on a similar specimen in the
Louisiana State University collection several years ago, a copy of which can be
read (you'll have to read slow ... it has more technical terms in it than any
pub I've read in a long time!!!)

That was fun reading Bobbie, I like his blog.

The only raptor I know of with an impressive "scream" is the Red Tailed Hawk. I'd never think of it as "horrific", though.  To me it's one of the best sounds made by anything.

Paul

I agree Paul but my brother has no clue what a raptor sound like. I think it just scared him as he never heard one before. This does not look like a RTH.

17052  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Should Oregon shoot barred owls to save spotted owls? on: 06-Feb-11, 08:46:00 AM
Nothing's worked. Not the clamp on federal timber sales that hammered Oregon's mill towns. Not the lawsuits or the listing as an endangered species. The belated work to retain and restore its favored old-growth habitat will take decades to unfold. Twenty plus years of trying to save the northern spotted owl and it's still slipping away.

Come summer, federal wildlife officials expect to finish a draft environmental impact statement that most likely recommends taking to the woods with shotguns. Over the next year, in three or more study areas from Washington to northern California, they might kill 1,200 to 1,500 barred owls -- the larger, more aggressive competitor that has routed spotted owls from much of their territory and become, along with habitat loss, the biggest threat to their survival.

Is this a hawk? I thought maybe an Owl! He said it made a horrific sound! I blew it up a bit. Not sure what it is!

Not that I have a clue about ID... but this comment about a "horrific sound" does not make me think of a hawk. Correct me here... but don't they usually make high-pitched "kee-kee-kee" sounds? I always think these are quite delicate sounds, in spite of their power, size (in some cases) and strength.

That's my two-cents-worth. No - wait - this is Ireland, and we are broke... so that's my 648 Euros' worth...

Yes, he said it was more like a scream not a squeak toy as I call a hawk when perched making noise, that I only saw once and it was in Rochester!!! Smiley Then again, we are dealing with muscles and no brains!! Kidding!!

2funny  Ladies, both are worth the view!

OK, I don't geddit...

Check your email Bobbie.

OK so can anyone ID this bird??? I haven't a clue. He said it had a huge wing span, so I was thinking OWL. I wish he went in front and took the pic. I told him a video would have been better, he said, I'm old and wasn't thinking!!!
