Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Navy rescues a rare Barn Owl from drowning Shri Lanka

Naval personnel at SLNS Dakshina in the Southern Naval Command had a unique opportunity to rescue a barn owl from drowning recently. On hearing the sound it had made, they rushed to a water tank where the bird had fallen accidently. They did not hesitate to utilize their life saving skills to save the life of the frightened bird. It was found drenched in cold water on the rainy night of 13th January 2011. The bird breathed happily having revived from the tender care extended by the Naval personnel to him at the unexpected moment. Commanding Officer SLNS Dakshina Captain LHSR Lelwala commended the timely action of his men and handed the barn owl over to the Wild Life Officials to be released to its natural habitat in the following morning. Now, the bird roams freely in the mangroves on the banks of River Madhu humming praises to the brave men in blue who took pity on an innocent bird, which would otherwise have lost its life in a watery grave for lack of any attention. The barn owl, a nocturnal bird of prey, has a heart-shaped face and small eyes set in rigid sockets. It possesses soft feathers and sound deadening filaments for silent flight. The bird has remarkable hunting skills known as “perch and pounce” and it silently swoops in, spreads its talons wide and pounces on its prey. Its population is limited in Sri Lanka and found mainly in north-western coastal areas, low-country dry zone and recently in wet zone. ShriLankaNavy

Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / German Police Pick up Drunken Owl
|

An owl that had evidently drunk too much Schnapps from two discarded bottles was so inebriated that it got picked up by police. The bird will be released once it has sobered up. German police said on Tuesday they had discovered a paralytic owl that appeared to have drunk too much Schnapps from two discarded bottles. "A woman walking her dog alerted the police after seeing the bird sitting by the side of the road oblivious to passing traffic," Frank Otruba, spokesman for the police in the southwestern city of Pforzheim, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. The Brown Owl didn't appear to be injured and officers quickly concluded that it had had one too many. One of its eyelids was drooping, adding to the general impression of inebriation. "It wasn't staggering around and we didn't breathalyze it but there were two little bottles of Schapps in the immediate vicinity," said Otruba. "We took it to a local bird expert who has treated alcoholized birds before and she has been giving it lots of water." The bird will be released once it has sobered up, police said. A wild owl apparently had a wild time in southern Germany. Lots of reports of drunken birds lately, what gives?

Kris G sent me this and I told her I would post it.
No Broadcast January 10, 2011
We will not be broadcasting The Owl Box in 2011. Last year, when Molly showed up, Donna and I put our plans on hold while we broadcast The Owl Box. We have decided not to do that this year because at our age (closing in on 70) we do not believe it is a good idea to put ones dreams on hold. Molly was a once in a lifetime event and we will never forget her or the wonderful people we met because of her.
While 99.9% of the Molly experience was wonderful, we had our share of threats, not only to us, but to Molly and The Owl Box and as this past weekend in Tucson proves, it only takes one kook to turn an event into a real tragedy. There were also those that wanted us imprisoned and filed complaints with local, state and federal authorities because they had different views than we had when it came to the owl box, feeding the owlets and flash photography. Others did and continue to just make up stuff and post it on other sites as fact to create controversy. I share this not to complain but to let you know that broadcasting The Owl Box was not all honey and roses.
We have not reconnected any of the cameras so we have no information as to activity inside the owl box. Donna and I plan to spend most of our time traveling in 2011 and we want to thank everyone for their support.

I found some good news about Ranger in another forum
As per Chad & Chris, Ranger is ready to be released this coming Sunday. Great news and I'm happy about it but nervous about him potentially meeting up and fighting with Boomer.
Ranger is ready to go!!! Sorry for the delay, Heidi-- Laura has no problem with us providing the details regarding his release, and all are welcome. We went back out today and after spending some time with Ranger we all agreed that he's ready for release. Last week he was able to capture live prey in mid-air in the flight cage, and he hasn't shown any lingering signs of the head trauma. Laura has informed the DOW and we are preparing to release him this Sunday, Jan. 23rd at Sandy Ridge Reservation in North Ridgeville around 11:00AM. These are tentative plans at the moment, as Laura still needs to secure permission to release him at Sandy Ridge. We will most likely walk him through the woods to the opening of the marsh for the release. We will post if plans change, but those interested in attending can also PM or e-mail us so that I can provide you with contact info. in case plans change. Here are some pics of Ranger from today as we fed him his quail-- he flew down to get it, then he took off from the sawhorse to eat on a perch in the back of his cage...
Oh boy, this is great but of course we worry about the fights. Fingers crossed!!
