17446  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Birds of Prey Foundation some of their rescues on: 11-Jan-11, 10:16:29 AM
Birds of Prey Foundation Red-tailed Hawk admitted in December 2010 unable to stand. He is still in ICU making slow but steady progress. Hopefully he will be ready to move to the flight cages after the cold weather moves out.
The total number of birds admitted for 2010 was 532

Screech Owl who was caught and carried around by the wing by a dog. Amazingly enough, there were no broken bones. He is missing his tail feathers and had a small puncture wound on his wing. He is recovering in our ICU. When he is well enough he will be moved into a large outdoor flight cage with other Screech Owls.
Hatching year Raven begging us for a snack. This little guy needs a crash-course in learning to be a Raven since he was raised by people before we admitted him.
One very sad-looking Barn Owl. She was admitted after getting into a bucket of copper-based joint compound. We have washed and washed, but still cannot get all of it off. She will spend the winter inside under a heat lamp because she has no insulation against the cold. Please cover buckets that are not empty!!!!
Saw-whet Owl patiently waiting for Spring. This little guy was admitted late this fall after hitting a window. He is ready for release now, but we have to wait for Spring in the mountains now.
Osprey who was admitted this fall with puncture wounds and bruising on one wing. He was very thin and weak when he got here. He is finally in a large flight cage starting to fly. Dec 6 2010

Early morning visit, on the perch for an hour between 7 - 8am. Noticed every time she arrives before 8am it's always from the North indicating her roost is to the North or outside the city....Dave

17453  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Trapped Owl Starves to Death Atop Pine Tree (CA) on: 11-Jan-11, 06:18:10 AM
A San Francisco barn owl starved to death after becoming tangled in debris and caught in a treetop, a WildRescue spokeswoman said.

Last Friday, local birder Dominik Mosur responded to a report of a dead owl hanging in a tree near Mission High School, next to Dolores Park.  The animal was found with black netting tangled around both its legs. It is not known how long it was trapped.

Rebecca Dmytryk, spokeswoman for WildRescue, said that she believes the owl became stuck after the netting got snagged on a branch, tethering the bird to the pine tree. Dmytryk said birds are often caught in discarded fishing line, kite string or netting that become attached to protruding tree branches

Mosur, a math teacher from the high school, recovered the body from the top of a neighboring 50-foot pine tree.

Both Mosur and Dmytryk said that the owl had lived in the area for quite a while, due to the copious amount of owl pellets discovered under the tree and littering the school's courtyard.

Owl pellets, Dmytryk said, are masses of regurgitated hair and bone from prey that the animal can't digest.

The death is not surprising, considering the recent owl population decline, Dmytryk said. San Francisco has become a less hospitable environment for nocturnal predators, she said.

Dmytryk is advising people to report wild animals in distress to WildRescue's hotline at (866) WILD-911, where they can find numbers to the nearest rescue organization.

Injured animals can also be reported to rescue@wildrescue.org or by paging the rescue team at (831) 429-2323.

While Malta shoots birds just to shoot them - or so it appears - Cyprus traps songbirds for sale as restaurant delicacies. This report is from the RSPB... the photo is not pretty.

To succeed, their timing must be just right.  White Falcon, White Wolf follows two families, a breeding pair of gyrfalcons and a pack of Arctic wolves.  As nine months of snow and ice melt away, flowers bloom, young are born, and the struggle begins.
