17507  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Hundreds more birds found dead in western Ky. on: 06-Jan-11, 07:30:53 AM
MURRAY, Ky. -- Kentucky wildlife officials say several hundred dead birds were found dead in the western part of the state.

The grackles, red wing blackbirds, robins and starlings were found last week.

New Year's Eve fireworks have been blamed for the deaths of thousands of blackbirds in central Arkansas. Another 450 birds died this week in Louisiana, likely after hitting power lines or cars.

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Marraccini says someone called police about the discovery in Kentucky, and they alerted state officials.

Marraccini says tests performed on the birds ruled out diseases or poisons. He said the deaths could have been caused by weather or another natural event.

Mass bird deaths are not uncommon.   ??? ??? ??? Shocked

17508  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Three dead whooping cranes found in Calhoun County on: 06-Jan-11, 07:28:56 AM
ALBANY, GA -- First a flock of birds were found dead in Arkansas and Louisiana, now three dead whooping cranes are found in Calhoun County.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says hunters found the three endangered birds just west of Albany on December 30th. They say a landowner reported that the cranes had been living in the area for a few weeks.

“The Georgia Department of Natural Resources along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife are conducting an investigation into the suspicious death of the three cranes,” says Ranger First Class Ben Roberts with the Georgia DNR.

Well, it paid off for this guy! Good for him!  clap thumbsup Nothing like a second chance.

Left homeless after his life and career were ruined by drugs and alcohol, Williams has been offered a job by the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and is being pursued by NFL Films for possible work. He and his compelling tale became an online sensation after The Columbus Dispatch posted a clip of Williams demonstrating his voiceover skills by the side of the road.

17516  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Wild Pig Cam: Raccoon Dogs fight on: 05-Jan-11, 08:52:45 PM

A Raccoon Dog is a wild canid native to Northern Asia.  It is only distantly related to dogs.  Trapped for its fur in China, it is the source of a lot of the fur from China that the Animal Rights industry calls "dog fur" when it's used on clothing.  It's not a dog.

Thanks Carol, I thought it was just another name for a Raccoon but the picture does not look like a Raccoon, similar.

I'm in!!

The playground committee at Byron-Bergen Elementary School has been working for over a year to raise funds to update and enlarge our old, much used playground. Our new playground will be handicapped accessible so students with varying needs are not sitting on the sidewalk watching others play.  Our new playground will have play space and activities for our newest population of students, 3 and 4 year olds that come to us for Pre-K.  Our new playground will have lots of activites that will exercise our student's bodies in many different ways.   To improve our student's physical and social development we want them to be able to climb, crawl, swing, slide, jump, balance, hang, push, pull, bounce, stomp, spin, run and play.
