Thought for Today

Good one, especially today in R!

Shaky put that cam up just in time!

Jim P and Carrie did the lion's share of the work installing the camera after Kenn had assembled it. I spent most of my time inside the noisy, grimy machine room pulling cables and reconfiguring the computers and video equipment.

Ok, glad you revealed the crew! Thank you Jim, Carrie, Kenn and Shaky. Good job by all!

http://www.examiner.com/culture-events-in-national/red-tailed-hawk-conquers-manhattan-legend-of-pale-male-documentary-review

The Legend of Pale Male tells the true story of how a bird became a celebrity in New York, New York.

While Frank Sinatra sang, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere,” Manhattan’s most famous red-tailed hawk appears to have no intentions of ending his 5th Avenue run any time soon.

Our story begins in Central Park in 1993, where Frederick Lilien found himself searching for a life path that would lead as far away from a career at his family’s Belgiun law firm as possible.

He meets up with photographer, bird watcher, butterfly expert and unofficial guardian of Cental Park, Francis Kennedy, who befriends Lilien.

17873  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / D & C: Crows harrass fake horned owl. on: 14-Dec-10, 07:05:59 AM
I stood in a parking lot near the Hochstein School of Music just before 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, watching crows stream overhead by the hundreds, flying in a southwesterly direction.
And I mean hundreds of them, in a long line that seemed to originate over at the river gorge somewhere to the east of WXXI.
Every time I thought this procession was about to end, here came more of them, flying low enough that I could make out their cawing above the sound of late afternoon traffic.
And that’s not all.
I noticed that as the crows streamed over one of the nearby buildings, a few would swoop down low near the roof, almost as if they were landing on top of it.
I looked more closely, and had my answer.

One of those fake owls had been put up on the edge of the roof, no doubt in an attempt to deter gulls and other birds that might want to roost there and make a mess.
It was funny to watch.
The crows obviously took it to be a real owl and reacted accordingly. Great Horned Owls are a crow’s worst enemy (next to man!), and these crows were swooping at this one in the same way they would “mob” a real owl or hawk.
One even landed on the roof edge a few feet away, cawing loudly all the while.
It was interesting, though, that not all of the crows reacted in the same way. Many simply continued to fly by overhead. Were these the older, more experienced crows? Only some of the crows — younger, less experienced crows, perhaps? — bothered to engage in the “mobbing.”
But they didn’t do it for long.
I’ve watched crows harass a real owl or hawk for long periods of time — 15, 20 minutes at least.
But these crows apparently sensed there was something phoney about this owl that narry flinched.
Invariably they would fly off after a minute or two, only to be replaced by crows flying up from behind, which would also “mob” the “owl” for a brief time before flying off as well.
It’s hard to fool a crow.
And hard to miss them when these huge flights converge on the downtown area late each afternoon during winter.
Twenty thousand or more have been tallied on recent December Christmas Bird Counts entering their traditional nighttime roosts along the river and near the GEVA theater.
Why does this happen?

17874  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Beer-Collared Bird Freed This Weekend (CA) on: 14-Dec-10, 06:59:39 AM
Two of at least five seagulls have been saved!

Those seagulls who were tortured with beer can collars continue to be found and rescued here in the Bay Area. It happened again this weekend in San Francisco.  Someone befriended a seagull over the past few days near San Francisco State University giving it handouts.  They reached out to WildRescue for help. The rescue was successful with the bird being caught and freed from the jagged beer can this weekend. Rebecca Dmytryk with WildRescue said her job is not over yet.  She thinks there are several more birds out there with the cans around their neck.
Dmytryk says if the cans are removed, the birds will eventually die.

There is a $6,0000 reward for information leading to an arrest for whoever tortured the birds in the first place.  Reports of beer collared birds go back to September. They have been spotted along the San Francisco Bay and down the coast to Half Moon Bay.

Sightings can be reported to a dedicated pager at (831) 429-2323 or emailed to rescue@wildrescue.org.

It's a federal crime to put these cans on the birds. According to WildRescue, nearly every wild bird is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The act, implemented in 1918, offers protection of migratory birds from being hunted, kept as pets, or sold. It was first used as a treaty between the U.S. and Britain, but later expanded to include Mexico, Japan and Russia.

How sick are people!

17879  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: ABCs of birds - Letter V on: 13-Dec-10, 11:30:36 AM
V is for Vanga:

Helmet Vanga

The Helmet Vanga Euryceros prevostii is a distinctive-looking bird of the vanga family, Vangidae, with a huge arched blue bill. It is the only member of its genus. Adults mainly eat large insects, but food items brought to young in the nest may be more varied , including snails, lizards, spiders and crabs.
