I love the hustle & bustle too-that's why we met up before Christmas.  This was WAY beyond hustle & bustle.  I literally had a panic attack...felt like I was suffocating.

Ei

That's what you get for living in a town with only one traffic light.

It was horrific when we went last year..AFTER Christmas, I can imagine before!  Shocked

Great tree. I'm going soon.

Just don't go on a weekend.  I made that mistake once-went down to hang out with my cousins from NJ-OMG!  Remember that Star Trek episode with the overpopulated planet?  That's what it was like trying to go down 5th Avenue.  Never imagined in my life I'd feel claustrophobic on a city street!

Ei

Oh boy, yes, we are going on a WEEKEND. It's OK, I love hustle and bustle, I  think!  suspicious

I also want to go to Hoboken and get a cake from the "Cake Boss". I know I'll never get in there.

Pretty sad isn't it? Here we have people stealing Catalytic Converters from under cars just to get to that piece of copper core inside. Need to hit quite a few cars to get a pound of copper. Is it really worth it? If so, I'm in!  wave devil

18118  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Akhwesahsne Mohawk School students enjoyed special activities (NY) on: 30-Nov-10, 09:32:48 PM
HOGANSBURG, N.Y. – Special activities at the Akhwesahsne Mohawk School were the focus in November from Early Years students to sixth grade. Activities along the lines of bring a parent to school, bird of prey day, remembrance day and anti-bullying were used to enhance classroom academics and personal growth for all students.

Though the Early Years science fair can’t be forgotten as staff, students and parents worked hard on exhibits that fit in the theme of farm life.

On Nov. 10 the Ontario Power Generation Corporation for the Cornwall area sponsored a Peregrine Falcon presentation by the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, Birds of Prey Education Tour. Children had the opportunity to participate in a 40-minute interactive presentation. Part of the presentation involved a video on the life and habitat of the Peregrine Falcon, what caused it to be endangered and how humans have now intervened to ensure the survival of this bird of prey. The part of the presentation the children and parents in attendance enjoyed the most was when they were introduced to Nova, a live Peregrine Falcon. (Remember Nova, Big Frank posted Nova when he was a baby)

There was a more serene atmosphere at the Remembrance Day Ceremony as students read poems and sang songs to recognize community members who served in wars, past and present, and those who died. To personalize veterans, community members that died in war had their names read acknowledging their achievements and bringing home the fact that these were relatives and not just strangers.

The anti-bullying campaign kicked off with a presentation by Carolyn Francis and Wanda Thompson from the Akwesasne Child and Family Services. This campaign focused on educating the children about bullying. The children learn what bullying is and what they can do to stop it.
18119  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / DNR seeking person who shot falcon (Watertown WI.) on: 30-Nov-10, 09:17:11 PM
An injured peregrine falcon was found in the city of Watertown last week and taken to an area animal rehabilitation center. Wildlife officials are searching for the person who may have shot the endangered species.

Department of Natural Resources warden Dave Walz said the bird was shot through the wing and was unable to fly although no bones were broken in the wing. The bird was rescued by a local resident who found it wounded and took it to the Wildlife in Need center located outside of Oconomowoc. The falcon will be rehabilitated at the center and released after a full recovery.

Peregrine falcons are a large, crow-sized falcon, with a blue-gray back, barred white underparts and a black head and “moustache.” The falcon injured was a two-year-old female. It was banded by wildlife officials near the Mississippi River where it was born. By tracking and monitoring the bird through its band, Walz said officials know that it raised young near the Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee over the summer.

Although the shooting of a peregrine falcon is unusual in the city, Walz said there have been many instances of local residents shooting at hawks during the winter.

“A lot of people don't like hawks hanging around their songbird feeders, so they tend to be easy targets for shooting,” Walz said. “We're not sure what exactly happened to this bird, but we've had people shoot birds for that similar reason.”
Walz said peregrine falcons are listed as an endangered species at the state and the federal level. Walz said the intentional shooting of the bird can carry a hefty fine.

Those who may know more about the bird shooting are asked to call Walz at 262-9508. They can also contact the local police department or call the DNR hotline.
