18227  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / For Owls, Gals with Big Spots Drive the Guys Wild (Live Science) on: 21-Nov-10, 07:46:17 AM
"What nice spots you have" could apparently be a barn owl pickup line. A new study found that female barn owls with larger spots seem to up their sexy quotient, and have greater success in mating.

Perplexingly, the same trait — large dark spots on the tips of the white feathers covering the owl's body — appears to hurt male barn owls' reproductive success.
In the new study, researchers followed barn owls over several molting periods and measured any changes in their successive coats. They found that adult females bred earlier in the season and laid larger eggs when their new coats became scattered with larger spots. In contrast, males with this trait fared less well.

"The key story is that there is sexually antagonistic selection — females are selected in one direction, and males in another direction," said Alexandre Roulin of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, co-author of the new study. An example of sexually antagonistic selection in humans, he said, is the hip bone. In females, larger hips are selected for because they aid in childbirth, while in males, larger hips are selected against because they hinder the ability to run fast.
However, for owls, it's less clear what adaptive function dark spots would have.

Whatever the reason, on female owls, larger spots definitely attract the boys. In a related study, the researchers found that when male barn owls were mated with females whose spots had been removed, they reduced their sperm investment, and chicks from such pairings didn't fare as well.

But why are spots so attractive on a female?

"My guess is that the size of the spots signals gene quality," Roulin told LiveScience.

The dark coloring of the spots is caused by the pigment melanin. Whatever gene or genes in barn owls that are responsible for the production of melanin may have other biological functions that are somehow beneficial in females, Roulin said. And this same gene may be somehow harmful in males.

But it's too early to know which genes may be involved, and to figure out why they have these puzzling effects.

"Now we would like to understand why we find this result, because it seems very strange — females with spots do better and males do less well," Roulin said. "My impression is we came to a system where there are really great things to discover."

Roulin and Lausanne colleague Amelie Dreiss reported their findings in the November 2010 issue of the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Females with bigger spots, attract more mates.
18228  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Hundreds of Hakaluki birds poached: 6 sued (Bangladesh) on: 21-Nov-10, 07:42:29 AM
Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district has filed a case against six people on charge of killing several hundred migratory winter birds.

Finding several hundred migratory birds lying dead in Gourokuri Beel area of Hakaluki Haor in Juri upazila on November 15, a guard of the village conservation group informed the local office of the environment department.

"On November 15, I saw a large number of migratory birds lying half dead in a dried land of Gourokuri Beel. I also saw that two miscreants of the area were catching the half dead birds, and putting them into big bags after slaughtering. As I tried to resist this heinous act, the two culprits left the place with three big bags containing slaughtered birds. Still there remained a large number of dead migratory birds at the spot," said Goyendra Biswas, a guard of the village conservation group under the environment department.

Later Juri Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Monish Chakma, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Juri Police Station Md Hasanuzzaman and Forest Officer Ratan Chandra Das visited the spot and recovered the dead birds.

"The birds were killed with poison traps. Samples of the dead birds have been sent to laboratory to detect what kind of poison was used in the traps," said Gazi Mustafa Kamal, Range Officer of Moulvibazar office of Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation department.

UNO Monish Chakma said he has advised the concerned authorities to take legal steps against the miscreants involved with this heinous act.

Juri Police Station OC Md Hasanuzzaman said the environment department filed a case against six suspected miscreants in this connection on November 16 and police is trying to arrest the miscreants.

During winter, several gangs engage in hunting migratory birds using traps including poison traps at different big water bodies.

Former deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar Mofizul Islam had declared monetary award for those who would capture bird hunters and hand them over to police. But due to lack of publicity, this unique step is yet to see adequate success.

K is for KAVER: Kaver is the first falcon I ever saw and I immediately knew I was in LOVE. He is the one who got me hooked on Kodak Falcons. From that day on, I don't think I missed a day. He treated his lovely mate Mariah with great care. He was "Super Dad" to all of his many many kids. He stood by Mariah's side when she was injured, he fed her, helped feed the kids when she couldn't. Kaver is so special and will always be my QTP2T. When he left and never came back, he took a piece of my heart with him. I will never forget the joy that boy gave to me and others. I miss him dearly.

this is one of my favorite backyard jay photos.

Patti, this is a wonderful photograph!  It illustrates to me that the only useful purpose for snow is to provide beautiful backdrops!

Would make a great Christmas card!
Thanks for the compliment...that was a horribly destructive ice storm where many trees were killed, power was out for half the city for up to two weeks, etc.  The silver lining was the bird photos!
