I donated to Raptor Trust in New Jersey today and went to their Focus on Raptors.  10 photographers pay and get to take pictures of the birds in a natural setting.  The only drawback is that the birds have to wear their jesses and be tied to a perch.  But they seemed to manage.  Here are pictures of Georgette (and there is a twirly head for Dale and Donna):

C - Chickadee.  A friend of mine buys those little white worms to feed his backyard friends.  When a youngster visits he lets them hold a little cup with a couple worms in it.  He whistles and soon a chickadee will land on the cup to take a worm.  Great lesson for little kids.

How cool is that? I think Chickadees are so darn cute. Thanks

Interloper into the Territory!
Well, all has been pretty quiet so far this fall. Durand and Trooper have been seen almost on a daily basis checking in at the ledge, scraping in the gravel and otherwise maintaining their bond with each other and to the site. I have been continuing to work on adjusting camera settings to fine tune the exposure hoping for the end result of a better view of the nestbox on bright, sunny afternoons when that corner of the ledge is usually in shadow. More work is needed but I am confident I should be able to find a happy medium. Later this month we will be updating computers which should help keep the streaming from going down so often. Keep your fingers crossed and think positively for us that the updates and adjustments result in the improvements we anticipate!
Yesterday afternoon there was excitement on and around the ledge--a third falcon appeared and caused quite a stir with Durand and Trooper. Thanks to Mick in Seattle for capturing video of altercations on the ledge as well as dramatic fly-bys.

If you missed it (like I did!), below are links to 3 videos on YouTube that highlight the action. I believe the intruder was an unbanded adult female and is the bird closest to the camera in the second clip and in the photo above. Overall, it appears as though Durand and Trooper successfully defended their territory although we will continue to closely monitor all sightings of falcons via the cams to determine any changeover in individuals. I've said it before and will say it again: this is one instance where having these birds banded really, really assists in knowing who is who. Without leg bands it is so much more of a guessing game!

18432  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / New noise sensors could cut owl road deaths in Norfolk (UK) on: 06-Nov-10, 09:48:20 AM
Sensors are going to be installed on Norfolk's roads in a bid to cut the number of owls being killed by traffic.

The Hawk and Owl Trust, at Sculthorpe near Fakenham, is identifying black spots where owls, particularly barn owls, have been struck and killed.

It will then install sensors that react to headlights and emit a noise that deflects wildlife away from the road.

In Sweden, where they are being trialled on moose, the great grey owl mortality rate has also gone down.

The Hawk and Owl Trust is asking people to help by looking out for and reporting any owl or other bird of prey casualties on the county's roads.
'Noise will alert'

The trust's conservation officer for East Anglia, Nigel Middleton, said: "We plan to install deflectors that, when activated by headlights, release one of five different sounds randomly.

"We hope the noise will alert owls or other birds of prey that could be at risk from the traffic as they hunt along the verges.

"We'll monitor progress to identify any increase or reduction in owl mortality as a result."

Hawk and Owl Trust president Chris Packham said: "This seems a really sensible appliance of science and if it works we might see more owls in our countryside.

"We know from earlier trust research that a significant proportion of the young owl population gets taken out on Britain's roads."

Another charity, The Barn Owl Trust, estimates that in a typical year Britain's 4,000 pairs of Barn Owls produce roughly 12,000 young and 3,000 of these are killed on roads.

By Washington Post editors

The owner of a Fredericksburg, Va. tree service company has been fined $3,000 for unlawfully removing a hawk's nest containing three chicks from a tree.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Jerry Stein removed the red-shouldered hawk's nest from a tree he was attempting to cut down in Fredericksburg in May. A neighbor found the nest and called the Raptor Conservancy in northern Virginia to care for the chicks.

Two have since been released, while one subsequently died.

Stein entered a guilty plea Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Richmond. He was prosecuted under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which is intended to protect migratory birds, their nests and eggs.

Associated Press - November 5, 2010 1:05 PM ET

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Four rare whooping cranes have been sighted in northern South Dakota.

The Aberdeen American News reports that birders and others have been watching two adults and two young whoopers that have been feeding in harvested corn and bean fields north of Aberdeen since late October.

Federal wildlife officials are monitoring the site to ensure the birds are not harassed.

The birds are considered 1 of North America's most endangered. They currently are on their fall migration.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service specialist Jay Peterson says whooping cranes have not been spotted in the Aberdeen area for four years.
