Little known facts about Rhea Mae. I considered naming her Mae Rhea instead of Rhea Mae, but it sounded too much like Mariah. Mark Nash calls her Ray May. Back in 2007, I received an email. Bad news about Rhea Mae. She was in really bad shape at the Toronto Zoo's rehab center. A really bad case of bumble foot. I and the other Watchers were ready to drive up to Toronto ASAP. Not that we could have done anything. By the end of the day, I found out it had been a case of mistaken identity. Thankfully it wasn't Rhea Mae, but another juvenile Peregrine, who very sadly passed away. Rhea was the first Peregrine I had seen close up. I was mesmerized. She was sooooo gorgeous! I had my picture taken with her that day. She passed away of old age shortly after that. I cherish that picture. Amazing and wonderful Carol. Thank you. Poor Rhea, I'm sure you'll treasure that moment.

Do we know if Beauty was 1 of the 2? Did they just pass through? Hey Donna - I have no idea if one of them was Beauty or not. Too high to try to ID. My first thought was at least one was a juvie. This may have been the two that have been seen gracing Rochester's skyline the last week or so. They were definitely having fun, riding the winds high above Xerox. Both floated off to the north. On my way home, I tried to find them but couldn't. K thanks, I'm sure you all will be seeing more falcons in the coming weeks.

OK, here's my thought from 2006, as I watched Rhea Mae flying around the gorge, grabbing leaves and talon tagging with her sister and brother. Thought for Today "Born of Matriarch, Named for Matriarch's, Matriarch to be." Good one and true!

Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Falcon shooting: Finger of blame insults all of us

Remember the Falcon that was shot in Ireland?
I write in relation to a recent article in the Belfast Telegraph entitled 'Peregrine Falcon killed by shotgun in County Down' (News, October 19).
Criminal acts such as this do nothing but tarnish the good name of shooting sports. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) condemns the shooting of any bird of prey.
I genuinely hope that that the perpetrators of this thoughtless act are brought before the courts, but while there is no disputing the fact that the bird was shot, I am disappointed that you chose to point the finger of blame at the local wildfowling community.
Wildfowling in the Strangford Lough area is heavily regulated under a permit scheme run by the National Trust in co-operation with BASC.
National Trust wildlife wardens monitor wildfowling activities on the lough and members of the wildfowling community work alongside Trust staff.
Wildfowlers have excellent quarry identification skills and a mentoring system ensures that newcomers can enjoy the sport in safety and that they remain within the law. Therefore, the chances of this incident being "a mistaken or accidental shooting by wildfowlers" is extremely slim - to say the least.
I would ask that you think carefully before insulting the local wildfowling community by pointing the finger of suspicion at responsible, law-abiding sportsmen.
