18606  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Deer attack sends Oregon bird watcher to hospital on: 25-Oct-10, 07:56:40 AM
UMATILLA, Ore. - A deer attacked a bird watcher at an Oregon wildlife area Thursday, forcing the man to go to the hospital for treatment.

Quentin Hinds, 49, of Hermiston, Ore., was bird watching at an Army Corp of Engineers Wildlife Area just below McNary Dam near Umatilla when he started taking pictures of the buck mule deer, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said.

At some point, the deer attacked him, injuring his leg. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

The fall is breeding season for deer in this area, and aggressive behavior by buck deer is quite common, ODFW warned in a press release. Known as the 'rut,' males engage in sparring matches and run off other bucks in competition for females deer.

“People should be very cautious this time of year around deer and never approach any wildlife,” said Kevin Blakely, ODFW Watershed District Manager. “While there is a lot of interest in viewing deer at this time of year, people should always maintain a safe distance.”

ODFW biologists, Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division troopers and Army Corps of Engineer personnel are looking for the deer.

The deer are quite used to human activity on the wildlife area, ODFW said. The deer involved in the incident will have to be removed to prevent any problems in the future.

18608  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / The Skinny on Invasive Snakes: Florida May Be Just the Start on: 25-Oct-10, 07:50:14 AM
Figures, this had to be the first article I found! Sssss

With thousands of Burmese pythons and other giant invasive snakes devastating wildlife in the Florida Everglades, the hottest question on many minds is: How far north could they go?

New research shows the snakes can withstand surprisingly cold temperatures, leaving open the possibility that their range could extend hundreds of miles northward.

This is not good and they can't stop it! How horrible for the wildlife.

18612  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Falcons prepare to fly the coop (Australia) on: 24-Oct-10, 10:17:12 PM
LIKE any proud mother of three newborns, Robyn Hills asks, “Are they cute or what?”

But her one-month old babies don't have 10 little fingers and 10 little toes like most babies.

Instead, they boast wings and claws.

The three peregrine falcon babies that hatched outside Robyn's kitchen window recently have become almost like children to her and husband Ross Harrison.

The three youngsters, which were first introduced to Daily readers last month, are getting ready to fly the coop and Robyn believes they could be gone in a fortnight.

“They're up on the ledge and flapping their wings,” she said.

“I'm thinking they're going to fly off soon.”

After the real parents, christened Emily and Frederick, laid their eggs in August, Mrs Hills quickly became attached to the birds and the arrival of their babies only increased her adoration.

Only one has been given a name – Fleur – after presenting female like qualities but the other two are yet to show any indication whether they are male or female.

Robyn and Ross have mixed emotions about their impending departure.

“I won't miss being woken up at a quarter to five of a morning,” Robyn said.

“But I will miss them.

“They've just kind of become our own, part of the family. Our friends always ask us how the kids are.”

Since the arrival of the newborns, Robyn has been contacted by two American online forums, and one Dutch, following the coverage by the Daily.

At the request of those groups she has placed a webcam at the window so they can watch the little ones grow.

She has also been dealing with other tough questions.

“One woman asked if we were going to band the young birds,” she said.

“I thought ‘You've got to be one brave person to do that'.”

The couple are in the process of contacting Australia Zoo about whether banding is a good idea.

Imagine this outside your kitchen window?
