18619  Member Activities / Vacations and Holidays / United Nations Day on: 24-Oct-10, 07:46:05 AM
On October 24, 1945, the United Nations (UN) came into force when the five permanent members of the security council ratified the charter that had been drawn up earlier that year. These members were: France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

On and around October 24, many activities are organized by all parts of the UN, particularly in the main offices in New York, the Hague (Netherlands), Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Nairobi (Kenya). These include: concerts; flying the UN flag on important buildings; debates on the relevance of the work of the UN in modern times; and proclamations by state heads and other leaders.

Since 1948, the event's anniversary has been known as United Nations Day. It is an occasion to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the United Nations and its family of specialized agencies.

18620  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Two whooping cranes have arrived at refuge Arkansas on: 24-Oct-10, 07:37:50 AM
Another whooping crane has been spotted at the Arkansas National Wildlife Refuge.

Two whooping cranes were seen in the marshes on the east shore of the refuge on Thursday, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services whooping crane coordinator Tom Stehn said.

The first two cranes were observed by Felipe Chavez-Ramirez and Walter Wehtje from The Crane Trust while they were collecting data, Stehn said.

Initial reports stated that one whooping crane had been spotted, but Stehn later updated his report to state that a pair of cranes was spotted.

This flock of whooping cranes has migrated between Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories of Canada and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge for generations.

They are the only naturally migrating whooping crane flock left in existence.

The birds travel solo, in couples or in small groups, Stehn said. They'll continue arriving well into December, and will spend the winter here before returning to Canada in the spring.

They usually begin arriving around Oct. 16, but unseasonably warm weather may have delayed their travels, Stehn said.

However, now that the first set of birds has arrived, Stehn said, a number of the flock should follow in the next few weeks once the first cold front arrives.

"The first good cold snap should get them moving," Stehn said.

Richmond, Va. --

Harriet, a rare falcon injured in downtown Richmond, appears to be on the mend.

The peregrine falcon suffered a detached retina and a shoulder fracture when she apparently crashed into a glassy high-rise window Oct. 12.

Harriet is being cared for at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, a wild-animal hospital in Waynesboro.

The injuries seem to be healing, but it is too early to tell if Harriet can be returned to the wild, said Miranda Sadar, a wildlife-center veterinarian.

The retina appears to be reattaching naturally. "It is not fully reattached, nor do we know if it indeed will do so," Sadar said.

Peregrine falcons can top 100 mph when diving through the air to catch a smaller bird to eat. They need perfect vision to survive in the wild.

Harriet and her mate, Ozzie, have nested downtown since 2003. A downtown worker found Harriet, unable to fly, Oct. 12 on the ground near Shockoe Slip.

Carol P. "The unbanded juvie Peregrine in Irondequoit was very light colored.  I believe she was a female and she looked alot like Aura.  A blondie blond.  Gorgeous!"

Hi everyone.
I saw this juvie yesterday!!  I was going to visit my Mom at the Episcopal Church Home during my lunch hour, and just as I was crossing the Ford Street Bridge, I saw gulls and pigeons dispersing in all directions, with an extremely light colored PeFa in hot pursuit.  I've never seen such a "blondie
blonde" and thought perhaps I was mistaken as to the species.  But she (?) sure looked like a Pefa!
Thanks Carol, for giving me hope that my mind isn't completely gone - YET!!!
Miss you all,
Carla P.
xoxo

This wee girl (?) is kinda in my neighbourhood! I don't, as a rule, do much sky-watching as I drive down Ridge Road East... Will have to stop more when I am home... What a great report!

Oh Bobbie, you'll bring back stories, I can guarantee it. Have a safe (LONG) flight to Rochester. I'll be waiting to talk with you!
