A few celebrities have taken residence in Waynesboro.

At the Wildlife Center of Virginia, two famous birds are being treated by the vets.

One is a Horned Owl who was stuck in a chimney for two weeks.

The other is a Peregrine Falcon who was the first to help a population boom of the species in the Richmond area.

She has a broken shoulder and detached retina, and may not be able to be released.

"A lot of the birds are starting to go off their breeding territories, and there's a lot of migration going on right now," said Dave McRuer, the Director of Veterinary Services at the Center. "And the birds, the more they move, the more they come into contact with things like vehicles, fly into buildings, and if they've done that in a public place, then people will often find them, put them in a cardboard box or something, and bring them here to the center for treatment.

Mcruer warns to be very careful when handling an injured bird of prey, because their talons and beaks are very sharp, and very strong.

CPF Postmaster Reports:

With a big thank-you to Andy McLachlan for his photos and observation report of a feathered visitor that dropped in for a quick pigeon snack behind the Toronto City hall much to the delight of the MANY onlookers.
Although not a peregrine falcon as earlier suspected, the juvenile Coopers / Sharpe-shinned hawk was not bothered at with all of the excitement that it was causing.

Danforth & Woodbine Drop-In surprize!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

With a big thank you to Cynthia Head for sending in a great photo and a report of a not so typical happening in this end of the city. The photo illiterates a great shot with one of our Toronto produced juvenile peregrine falcons with a very fresh pigeon kill as it stands on the kill on the roadway (of course in traffic). Another huge thank you to an unidentified lady that stoped and parked her vehicle in front of the young not so long ago fledged juvenile to protect it from the rush hour traffic while it carried on with meal.

Over the years, we see allot of these happenings in and around the urban nest sites where we are involved in the many fledge watches. Sadly, many of the young fledglings are not so lucky with their with interaction with the local automobile traffic. In this case, it appears that the quick thinking and actions of the unidentified lady likely saved this young peregrines life.

Lets hope that this young juvenile learns NOT to repeat this same action in the future to avoid becoming another casualty in our streets.

18748  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Girl spots rare steppe grey shrike on Scottish mainland on: 16-Oct-10, 07:09:11 AM
A steppe grey shrike has been spotted in mainland Scotland for what is believed to be the first time.

Eight-year-old schoolgirl Xanthe Funnell saw the bird at the Loch of Strathbeg RSPB reserve near Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.

RSPB Scotland said it was possible the bird had been blown on strong winds from somewhere south of Kazakhstan.

The steppe grey shrike is most commonly found in southern Europe and north Africa.

Xanthe - whose father Dominic is the reserve's manager - said she was excited by the find.
