Sheesh, another Power thingy. These Falcons  heart  anything that has to do with Power! Hope all goes well with them this season. A coal burner, could be nice and toasty...hopefully not too hot for them.

It's said that starlings - why esp starlings, I do not know - sit on chimney-tops because the smoke helps to rid them of creepy-crawlies. True or false? Maybe this is what Our Kids are doing...

Oh yeah - crows do this too - e.g. rooks, jackdaws.

And sometimes they fall down the chimneys!

I'd be really interested in hearing what the general thinking is on this.

http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/33/41/all_gooselesscity_2010_10_08_bk.html

Seems lots of people hate the C goose! I think they are beautiful but that's my opinion. Granted, they are every where but so are other birds. I can see, removing the eggs, before anything forms but to just cull them, gas them, shoot them, sorry...no way. IDK, it's a hard call with the geese.

First thing I thought too, Annette. Watch and see, tho - Donna will fox us again and tell us it is actually Jack-Snipe. Close. No cigar.

Jack-Snipe!  hysterical hysterical hysterical

Fascinating piece on coyotes from the NY Times. Pretty sure The Nephew and I saw two of them at Montezuma as we stood on the viewing platform near the Info Center. Staff were not sure whether they were coyotes or wolves. Gotta say "wolf" would have appealed. Any other encounters from the Forum? I understand they are definitely in our area.

 Shocked great article Bobbie! Thanks

Apparently a rare migrant in Malta, this Osprey may be one of the lucky ones, after being rescued by the Raptor Camp volunteers.

Another link on this site points out that the extra police on duty are not there for the protection of the birds, but for the safety of BirdLife volunteers!

Now this is getting downright barbaric. That poor Osprey and a baby at that! We need a road trip to Malta!

M&K's nest box from the Kodak Tower is now located on the Powers Building.  A&B's nest box was built by the Boyscouts and in storage at June's house.  When we needed two nest boxes, it was brought out of storage to be placed on the Times Square bldg.

These two building are very close together, so we weren't sure which (if either) would be chosen.  The falcons chose the Times Square location.

Will the Powers nest be removed this Winter so no stragglers decide to claim it. Then we'll have a territory battle brewin!

So perhaps one of the reasons Peregrines pick power plants to hang out at is for the warmth they produce. I'm down with calling them stills. Joyce, whatever speeds up your texting I'm all for it! harhar lol

Yeah, yeah poke ...I know my texting is the slowest.  If anyone could see me trying to get out a quick watch report  tired - it takes forever!  My cell keys are so small that I have to type with a finger nail.  And it's hard to concentrate when you're being asked "Are you done yet?" aaarggh

Your better than me, I abbreviate everything...ask MAK...she writes back.. HUH!!!
Yes Donna is the queen of short text messages! For the most part I understand but every once in awhile I have to "huh" her!!! Wink gum

Your learning!
18913  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Award for Birmingham cleaner who caught egg smuggle on: 05-Oct-10, 09:56:45 PM
An airport cleaner who helped catch a notorious egg smuggler is to be given an award later.

John Struczynski became suspicious of Jeffrey Lendrum, 48, and found discarded egg boxes at Birmingham Airport in May.

Lendrum was arrested and found in possession of 14 peregrine falcon eggs. He was jailed for 30 months in August.

Mr Struczynski will be presented with a limited edition bird print by the environment minister and the RSPB.

Lendrum, of York Close, Towcester, Northamptonshire, was arrested by counter-terrorism officers as he waited to board a flight to Dubai.
Dry shower cubicle

He was caught with the rare eggs, valued at £70,000 on the black market, strapped to his body.

Lendrum, who had previous convictions in Zimbabwe and Canada for stealing rare eggs, had asked to use a shower room in the VIP Emirates Lounge.

But Mr Struczynski spotted him dashing in and out the cubicle. He became suspicious when he noticed the cubicle was still dry.

He checked bins in the room nearby where he discovered two discarded egg boxes, which contained a single red-coloured egg.

The cleaner contacted counter-terrorism officers who searched Lendrum.

The former member of the Rhodesian SAS had wrapped the eggs, which had been stolen from a nest in south Wales, in socks before taping them to his chest to keep them warm.
'Significant catch'

Andy McWilliam, investigations officer for the National Wildlife Crime Unit, said: "Jeffrey Lendrum was operating at the highest global level of wildlife crime. This is a significant catch."

At first Lendrum claimed they were chicken eggs he had bought at Waitrose before trying to fool police by saying he used them to treat his bad back.

However, at Warwick Crown Court in August, he admitted attempting to smuggle rare bird eggs out of Britain.

After the eggs were seized by police, 11 of them were successfully hatched and the highly-protected chicks released back into the wild.

Environment Minister Richard Benyon said: "Tackling the persecution of birds of prey is a wildlife crime priority across the whole of the UK and strong legislation is in place to protect and conserve our wildlife.

"I am grateful to Mr Struczynski for his quick thinking which helped to bring a peregrine falcon egg smuggler to justice."

Mr Struczynski will be presented with a framed limited edition print of an avocet and thanked by RSPB conservation director Mark Avery and police at a ceremony in Birmingham.

The eggs were incubated in socks!  Shocked

The birds were fostered by captive-bred falcons and have since been released into the wild!  clap

at least you'all know how to text I have no idea if my phone can even do that?  lol

why did Kodak take down the nest boxes? wondering if someone in upper management is anti falcon (if they are I hope every pigeon in Rochester poops on them)  Grin

I think basically because the nests stood empty for so many years. Isn't the one from TS from Kodak? Not sure. I forget the story on that nest.

Carol, it was posted on the fb page under the pic as a caption. It's in Ireland, so I really don't know. From what I understand, they brought it to the attention of the Raptor Conservation Officer.
