From DianaR on KFC

I tried to sign in to the forum, but it said that DianaR is not a valid ID. So I
tried to register anew, and it said that DianaR is already being used by another
member. Go figure.

I guess I just can't post there any more unless I use a different ID, a
different email address, and a different password.

Dammit - should I just give up?.

What is she doing wrong? Maybe her password? IDK...Shaky!

So sad for these pretty little birds. I swear, people have no  heart  crying

Thanks Bobbie, I'm afraid this will never end.

I read from your link that an anti-poaching OFFICER had 80 of these in his freezer:

Ambelopoulia is a controversial dish of pickled or boiled songbirds served in some Cypriot restaurants. It is illegal in Cyprus as it involves trapping wild birds such as Blackcaps and European Robins.[1]  Trapping kills birds indiscriminately, thus internationally protected species of migratory birds are killed as well. Enforcement of the ban has been lax, so many restaurants still serve the dish without consequence. As a result over a quarter million birds are estimated to have been killed during the spring 2010 season. (OMG)!!

Goodbyes of Cico and Luna

After their young ones have left, the parent storks Cico and Luna have embarked on their journey to the winter quarter regions. Luna bade farewell in the forenoon of August 19th and Cico a day later. During the last week the storks, by repeated clatter of their beaks and copulations, enforced their claim on the brood location. With the trek to Africa the family ties are dissolved and if everything turns out well Cico and Luna will meet again in the coming year in Vetschau/Spree Forest.

In the meantime most storks of Lower Lusatia have embarked to their winter quarter regions. As Cico and Luna, about 75% of German white storks, take the easterly route to Africa. The flight route of most storks passes over the Bosporus in Turkey, to Sudan further to Tanzania and even as far as South Africa. After arriving here they have covered a distance of about 6,250 miles (10,000 km) only to have a short rest period before it is time to for the return trip. Those interested in further information regarding the routes of flight of white storks can find it at the Internet site www.nabu.de.

In the middle of September the camera will be removed, cleaned and serviced in order for it to be replaced before our storks will return to their brood homeland. We will again get glimpses into the life of a stork as well as savour fascinating and moving shots of the upbringing of young storks.

"Bon voyage"

Since July the 23rd one of the young storks of the Vetschau Internet Storks has not returned to the eyrie. On August the 11th the remaining three young storks bade farewell to Vetschau/Spree Forest to embark on their first long journey.

The young storks gather in groups and fly without leadership from their parents to the winter quarters in Africa. Their adolescence until full maturity in two to three years time they will stay there. Only then will they return to build nests. At the ages of three to five years, occasionally even later, the white stork breed will for the first time.
The parent storks, "Cico" and "Luna" are still at the eyrie to stay overnight sporadically. They "fatten" themselves to increase their weights to have sufficient reserves for their own migration.

We extend our best wishes to our young storks, "Klappi", "Twiggi", Friedrich" and "Paula" and hope to recognize them by their bands sometime in the future.
We would wish that the best breeding result since the establishment of the eyrie at Vetschau of four fledgling storks could be repeated in the coming year. For this we have to maintain sufficient feeding areas for white storks as well as the whole manifold of species.

That Vesuvius was one mean Volcano in his day. I saw a show on TV a few weeks ago of the destruction it did on Pompeii. It happened so fast, people could not get out of it's path. They are all still there on display, pretty much mummified in the exact same position they were in when HE erupted. Pretty sad for all PLUS, I hear Pompeii is haunted.

Nice pics Jim and dawn. Thanks

(PETERBOROUGH) A pair of peregrine falcons have made the bell tower of George Street United Church home.
Head custodian Rob Steele first noticed that a pair of the endangered birds had taken up residence at the church last week.
He called the Ministry of Natural Resources who he says were quite surprised and happy the birds call Peterborough home. They only hope they return next year. Mr. Steele isn't surprised they chose the downtown church to live. It is the tallest church in the city which gives the birds a great vantage point to hunt in the city.

Birds have been shot, nests destroyed and chicks stolen in one of the worst years for crimes against birds of prey, according to the RSPB.

The charity’s 20th annual Birdcrime report reveals 2009 was another shocking year, with 499 reported incidents in the UK – the second worst in the past decade.  Shocked

There were 19 incidents reported in Lancashire, making it the fifth worst area in England. Reports for the county, including the Forest of Bowland area, say peregrine falcon nests being targeted, a buzzard being shot and chicks disappearing.

The RSPB has not released details of specific areas for fear of future attacks.

However, in June, three peregrine falcons were killed in the Forest of Bowland, believed to have been shot dead, in an attack called “shocking and disgraceful” by PC Duncan Thomas, wildlife officer for Lancashire Constabulary.

The iconic birds of prey can achieve speeds of up to 124mph when plunging from the sky after prey, making them the fastest creatures on the planet.

There are currently around 1,400 breeding pairs in the UK.

In May, two eagles’ eggs, worth £2,000 each, were stolen from a Preston bird sanctuary.

And in October 2008, a young peregrine was found shot and injured in Grindleton Quarry, Clitheroe.

Hen harriers can also be found in the county. Between 2002 and 2008, the comparatively tiny area of Bowland, accounted for over two-thirds of all the 127 hen harrier breeding attempts recorded by Natural England.

Penalties for killing a bird of prey include fines of up to ÂŁ5,000 or up to six months in prison or both.

Dr Mark Avery, the RSPB’s conservation director, says: “Wildlife crimes are an abhorrent feature of our countryside. And for the sake of eagles, kites, harriers, buzzards, falcons and ospreys, we have to take more action.

“Over time, egg collecting has diminished, but the killing of birds of prey is as big threat today as it was two decades ago.”

In 2009, the government announced that bird of prey persecution was one of the top wildlife crime priorities but, in view of the current spending review, the RSPB is concerned that resources to tackle wildlife crime will be seen as a soft option.

The RSPB says it wants to see a commitment from the government to tackling these crimes as well as long-term funding for the National Wildlife Crime Unit and a full wildlife crime review in England.

Conflict with land managed for the shooting of game birds remains the main problem for birds of prey, particularly the upland grouse-shooting estates in northern England and Scotland.

Some gamekeepers on grouse moors and pheasant shooting estates target birds of prey because they eat game birds kept for commercial and private shooting.

The main birds of prey affected are golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, hen harrier, goshawk, peregrine and red kite.

The RSPB believes new legislation is needed to make the managers and employers of those committing the crimes legally accountable.

Options such as vicarious liability, which holds people accountable for crimes committed by their staff, and removing the shooting rights for individuals and errant estates need to be considered.

The RSPB says this would provide a significant deterrent without imposing a burden on legitimate shooting interests.

Nationally, reported incidents included 384 shooting, trapping and poisoning allegations.

Cumbria tops the 2009 UK league of shame jointly with North Yorkshire, with 27 incidents against birds of prey.

In Cheshire, there were six reported incidents, four in Greater Manchester and three in Merseyside.

Dr Avery says: “Earlier this year, the former Wildlife Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, was one of more than 210,000 people to sign a pledge to protect birds of prey.

“This is a powerful voice and we will not rest until their cries have been heard by government.”
