19066  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Bird makes wrong turn in Canada, birders delight in UK on: 27-Sep-10, 07:09:18 AM
Twitchers' delight as rare bird spotted in Europe for first time after taking wrong turn in Canada on way to Mexico

Even for a birdwatcher, a trudge across four precarious miles of shifting sand dunes and shingle lashed by hail storms and gale force winds shows unusual commitment.

But when the object of your interest has gone 3,000 thousand miles out of its way to be there, it seems a small sacrifice to make.

Hundreds of twitchers have been making the pilgrimage to Blakeney Point, a spit on the north Norfolk coast, after hearing that a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher had landed there - its first ever appearance in Europe.

Oh, hurrah re sending it to Jeff, Donna. I'm glad you think he might appreciate it. My best regards to him in the Kingdom of Snow... and penguins.

He's loving every minute of it there. Last year he met Sir David Attenborough, who will it be this year!
19068  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Info on Crows on: 27-Sep-10, 06:47:53 AM
http://www.lancastercrows.org/crows.html

Crows are intelligent birds who serve an important role in our eco-system.

Crows mate for life and form life-long relationships with friends, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents. The groups you see on your lawn or in your trees are not random groupings -- they're FAMILIES. Crows are more intelligent than dogs, pigs, and even more intelligent than primates -- crows can MAKE their own tools, rather than simply using existing items AS tools. While a chimpanzee might poke a stick into tree stump to get some bugs to eat, the crow will take an existing item and bend and shape it to work better, to accommodate the situation.  Crow Coalition continued

Thank you all. I celebrated my birthday by watching two famous species of birds that migrate thruout the United States and eastern Canada. These birds are usually seen in flocks of nine in large open fields surrounded by imposing architectural edifices that have exorbitant admission fees to these natural audobon sighting areas. Suffice to say that I paid and witnessed beautiful acrobatics, superb skills of hunting and catching as well identifying many band numbers. The final result: Toronto Blue Jays - 6; Baltimore Orioles  - 1. Larry O

And I was getting so into this story of yours.... 2funny Had me goin Larry!

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association  Despite the grey and overcast skies to today, the birds have been flying. We've seen more than 300 Broad-wings and 80 Sharp-shinneds. Osprey, kestrels and harriers are also flying. Counted 3 more Bald Eagles too!  clap

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association  Bald Eagle record is broken!! We won't know the final record until December 15, but it's safe to say the previous record will be *crushed.* Previous record was 245, and we're now at 251 eagles.   2thumbsup

http://peregrinesbirdblog.blogspot.com/ Hey Bobbie, here's a birders blog in Northern Ireland. Some very cool pics.

Hey, Donna - thanks! Superior site, which I have bookmarked. Did you get this lad's full name? I cannot seem to find it. I know a few "Alans" in that part of the world.

Not sure but I think his name is Craig Nash! That's the name I saw.

Super news, Donna, about both the falcons and the condors. Here in Ireland, our PFs continue to nest on cliff-faces, their natural choices. Have yet to hear of a nest-box scheme in this neck of the wider woods. (Anyway - Donna will probably know before I do!)
