19098  Anything Else / Totally OT / Leica Announces New Range Of Digital Cameras And Binoculars on: 24-Sep-10, 08:45:27 PM
Leica, the camera and bincoluar manufacturer, has announced a new range of equipment which includes several new digital cameras as well as sets of high end binoculars. All of the items are set for release within the next month or two so if you’re looking for a stunning digital camera as an early Christmas gift for yourself or somebody extremely special then these could be ideal.
The limited edition Leica M9 Titanium is essentially a redesigned version of the M9 but it’s not jsut any redesign having been created by Volkswagen and Audi designer Walter de-Silva. This ultra modern and stunning looking camera certainly isn’t cheap and we don’t advise letting the kids play with it – available in November, the M9 Titanium will cost £19,800.

The Leica X1 is a high performance camera that is already available in a dual colour design, but will also be manufactured in an all black, sleek looking form. It will be available from October for £1,395.

The leica D-LUX 5 is the next generation of D-LUX cameras, following on from the successful and popular D-LUX 4. A 24x super zoom lens and very high quality image reproduction make this series one of the best performers and one of the most popular of all Leica high end cameras. It will be available in October for £630.

The compact V-LUX 2 is lightweight and small so that it can be carried anywhere that you might want to take photos. It also has a 24x super zoom lens and a 3″ rotating LCD display and will cost you around £675 when it is available from shops in October this year.

The Leica Silverline collection is a series of high power and visually stunning binoculars – these are set for release in November and will vary in price from £379 to £1,489.

I have never seen a cuckoo in the States, but I assume there are some... perhaps a number of species? Here's a good piece on their incubation...

A cuckoo has a remarkable ability to hold its egg inside it for an extra 24 hours before releasing it into a host bird's nest, researchers have found.

They say this "internal incubation" lets a cuckoo hatch before its nest mates, chuck them out and have the food foster parents bring all to itself.

19110  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Tifft Nature Preserve (Buffalo) on: 24-Sep-10, 06:43:23 AM
Tifft Nature Preserve is one of the finest natural history parks of this region. It is the only state-listed Important Bird Area (IBA) in Erie County. The Niagara River Corridor is, however, an international IBA. I am proud to have worked with Robert Andrle to gain that special status for both regions.

Ask any birder where is the best place to go to find birds and Tifft will be near the top of the list. In the spring especially there are often as many bird watchers as birds in the sanctuary. Someone will whisper to you, "Look, there's a...," and you can fill in the rest of that sentence with a species like Eurasian wigeon, white-eyed vireo, least bittern, Northern waterthrush, Virginia rail, Lincoln's sparrow, glossy ibis, woodcock or Canada warbler. Often, as that list suggests, the bird is rare and reported nowhere else on the Niagara Frontier that season.
