19126  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / 2 sandhill cranes flown from Green Bay wildlife sanctuary to Connecticut zoo on: 23-Sep-10, 08:42:00 AM
Sandhill cranes don't fly first class or coach. But with a little help from Delta Air Lines, two sandhill cranes flew in a plane's cargo area on Tuesday morning, making the trip from Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, Conn.

The orphaned pair, a 4-year-old female and 3-year-old male, arrived at the sanctuary about two years ago after someone raised them. That made it unlikely the pair would survive if released into the wild, so the sanctuary found them a new home at Connecticut's only zoo, curator Mike Reed said.

"This will be a great education tool for the zoo to learn about this bird that once roamed across the eastern United States," he said.

Sandhill cranes were hunted to near extinction in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but now have a stable population. They can live more than 20 years in captivity, Reed said.

Beardsley Zoo doesn't have any sandhill cranes. Its staff was excited about the opportunity to house them, he said.

Sandhill cranes have gray feathers, a large beak and a reddish crown. They are known for their unison calls, Reed said.

"It really does evoke the feelings of wilderness."

The cranes, from Wood and Waushara counties in central Wisconsin, lived near the sanctuary's Observation Building, but didn't fit in with the other cranes.

"They just acted too much like people," Reed said.

If the person who raised them would have instead taken them to to a licensed rehabilitator or facility when the animals were found, "they'd be flying wild, instead of flying to a zoo," Reed said.

The sanctuary regularly ships animals to zoos. Beardsley Zoo might return the favor one day, Reed said.

The sanctuary, 1600 East Shore Drive, rehabilitates about 4,000 animals a year, including up to a dozen sandhill cranes. At the moment, three sandhill cranes are on display at the sanctuary.

Wow, cool article Bobbie. I love those little guys, so cute. NO, we do not have them here. Hedgehogs are found in the wild in Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand, not in Australia or North America but some have as pets here.

Somewhere I have a link to the way back original birdcam page that opens with a kakking falcon-scared me half to death the first time I opened it.  It was still live the last time I tried it a couple of years ago.

I remember that, I had it saved but it's on my CRASHED Laptop.  Sad  I know someone has it saved. Yes, it scared me too Ei. Never expected it!  scared blue

Mary Ann
June 23, 2000

Mary Ann has spent the last few days resting and feasting on quail at the vet's office. This morning she was outfitted with a very small and lightweight GPS (Global Positioning System) transmitter to help us learn more about her migration path. For approximately one year, Mary Ann's location will be reported to a satellite every 96 hours.

Around noon, Mary Ann was taken up to the nestbox area and the door of her carrier was opened. She walked out of the carrier and continued to walk around the area just below the nestbox. As soon as Mary Ann was released, both Mariah and Cabot-Sirocco arrived and perched on the Kodak tower where they could watch the activities. Shortly after that, one of Mary Ann's siblings landed on the railing right by her and appeared to be encouraging her with his constant squawking.

Mark Nash, from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, was one of the people monitoring Mary Ann's release. He knew that Mary Ann's release caused the parents' squawking that he interpreted as a summons for a family meeting. All the siblings should have gathered within an hour or so. Mark became concerned when, after an hour, only one sibling had returned.

Meanwhile, people from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and Kodak people associated with the project, continued to monitor Mary Ann's attempts to fly. By nightfall, she still had not taken off.

June 18, 2000

Mary Ann has had trouble staying airborne. Around 9 p.m. she was seen on the sidewalk of State Street, so trained bird rescuers took her to a veterinarian for examination. After receiving medicine for hydration and nutrition, Mary Ann is in good health and now rests at the vet’s office. She’ll most likely be released in one or two days.

A wild baby snow leopard has been caught on camera.

By Matt Walker
Editor, Earth News

Filmed over 5,000m up in the highlands of Bhutan in the Himalayas, the baby leopard investigates a camera trap set by a BBC Natural History film crew.

The young snow leopard walks right up to the camera lens, sniffing it before, off-screen, walking into the bleak, rocky snow-swept landscape...
