Erin Still at King St and Ivy Persists
December 27, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Bruce and Linda have spent time watching the 18 King St nest site closely for changes in behavior and sightings of Ivy.  As of this past Thursday, Erin, who was identified by her band through scope views, is still the resident female at the site and is regularly seen bonding with Stormin.  Ivy continues to be seen on occasion on the edge of the territory and Stormin is now taking offence to this.  He has flown out to her roosting spots several times in an attempt to drive her off and Bruce witnessed one occasion where he forced Ivy to flip over in the air to fend him off.  He is being very stern and staying the course in his decision to defend his 17 year old mate Erin who is also taking calculated opportunities to make it clear to young Ivy that this is her home.  On Thursday, both Stormin and Erin were very active in the area hunting until late afternoon when Erin decided a nap on the nest ledge was called for.  Stormin took up position on the top of the nest building above her and stayed for 45 minutes watching the area closely while she slept.

We will continue to monitor the activity in the area and report on any news.

Quest at the Nest with a Winter Visitor
December 27, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Bruce Massey Reports:

I attended the Duncan Mill Road site on Saturday to check in on Quest and Skye.  I found Quest in the nest box doing some house cleaning, moving several pebbles around as I watched.  She stepped out into view on the porch and I was able to confirm her band number at that time in my scope.  A male was perched on 240 Duncan Mill Road and I turned the scope on him for a view.  My initial look caught red tape on the USFW that he bears on his right leg.  Knowing that this is not consistent with Skye, I called Tracy for a consultation.  I continued to focus my attention on the male and was finally able to get a read on his band number.  This male is donning a solid black recovery band marked W over 78.  This is McKenney from the Amexon nest site hatched in 2014.

Last year, Skye migrated in late fall and Quest spent the winter with a visitor then as well.  Lucky, at the time a one year old and also from the Amexon site, spent time around the territory with Quest until spring when Skye returned.  Lucky then moved on to take over the Etobicoke Sun Life nest site territory where he is currently the resident male.

It is quite possible that this is the same scenario as last year.  Skye has migrated for the winter and Quest has chosen to remain.  A young male finds his way into the territory and spends the winter until the man of the house returns.  We do believe that this is the case and we will look for Skye’s return in the spring.  This is the exact same situation that we see at the William Osler site every winter now so it is not extremely out of the ordinary.  The best news that comes out of these observations is that McKenney has come a long way from the young fledgling watched over a year ago by the Amexon team and is looking very much a dapper little man.

A Kodak Christmas - made right here in Rochester.

This is a photo that my Dad took back in 1961 in the photo studios at Kodak Office on State Street. It was then blown up to 18 x 60 feet and displayed in Grand Central Station as a back-lit transparency. And as many of you know, it was called the Kodak Colorama. My brother Danny is the blond haired boy inside.

From 1950 until 1990, Kodak’s Coloramas were familiar to millions of commuters in New York City's Grand Central Terminal. The panoramic photographs—18 feet by 60 feet—presented an idealized view of life in 20th-century America and promoted photography as an essential leisure activity.

Coloramas were promoted by Kodak as “the world’s largest photographs” and called “technically remarkable” by Ansel Adams, who photographed several. The towering backlit transparencies were 18-feet high and 60-feet wide, each illuminated by more than a mile of tubing.

A total of 565 Coloramas were publicly displayed, changing out every three weeks. Neil Montanus shot 55 of the 565 Coloramas that were displayed in Grand Central Station. When each new Colorama was unveiled, it often received ovation from New York City residents and travelers. Photographer Edward Steichen telegraphed Kodak upon viewing a Colorama in 1950, stating, “EVERYONE IN GRAND CENTRAL AGOG AND SMILING. ALL JUST FEELING GOOD.”

“These illuminated images reflected and reinforced American values and aspirations while encouraging picture-taking as an essential aspect of leisure, travel, and family,” said Dr. Alison Nordström, Eastman House curator of photographs, “The Coloramas taught us not only what to photograph, but how to see the world as though it were a photograph.

They served to manifest and visualize values that even then were seen as nostalgic and in jeopardy, salvageable only through the time-defying alchemy of Kodak cameras and film.” A constant in the first two decades of Colorama was a model using a Kodak camera, photographing family, an activity, or beautiful scene. “Coloramas resonate with nostalgia, a staple in Kodak advertising since at least 1900, reminding us to pause, via photography, in the midst of present enjoyment to record it for later remembrance,” Nordström said.

In addition to Adams, well-known names associated with Colorama include photographer Elliot Porter, artist Norman Rockwell who art-directed a Colorama, and TV’s Ozzie and Harriett who appeared in several. Colorama was a technical feat undertaken by Kodak’s advertising and photography teams. Making the exposures for each display was a full day’s work in almost total darkness. In early years the wet 20-foot transparencies were dried overnight in the swimming pool at Kodak’s employee recreation center — the only building large enough to accommodate Coloramas-in-the-making.

The 1990 renovation of Grand Central Terminal to landmark condition marked the end of the Colorama. The final display was a glittering nighttime view of the New York City skyline, with an oversized red apple nestled among the buildings — the only digital enhancement ever created for the Colorama program. The accompanying copy read, “Kodak thanks the Big Apple for 40 years of friendship in Grand Central.”

Just updating again. I saw Pigott perched on nestbox again. As I was sitting at my desk (I now face St Joe's), I heard a lot of sqwawking and then saw Pigott and I think George fly by. I may step out in a few to see if they are perched again nearby...

UPDATE - We received information that some of the pigeons we collected and turned over to the DEC had in fact ingested poison. The DEC is investigating and will update us once they have completed their investigation.
We do know that the poison is metabolized very quickly and the likelihood of the Peregrines or other animals becoming poisoned from the affected pigeons is slim. However we will continue to monitor the falcons and the downtown area.
Please feel free to notify us of any dead or injured pigeons, especially if they are found with corn. Please do NOT touch or handle the pigeons or corn with bare hands. We will be happy to recover them as we have gloves and bags on hand.
You can alert us via e-mail at falconwatch185@gmail.com or text or call my cell 315-717-2042 (Deb).
Thank you all for your help and concern for both the falcons and the pigeons!
