19471  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / The Bright Red of Cardinals Means Less in Urban Areas on: 04-Sep-10, 06:04:12 AM
ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2010) — Normally, the brilliant red of a male cardinal signals to females that he is a high-quality mate. But that may not be true of cardinals living in urban areas, a new study suggests

Researchers found that the bright red feather coloration of male northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) was less related to body condition for birds living in urban forests than it is for those in rural forests. In other words, even cardinals in relatively poor condition may appear bright red in urban areas.

"We found that the relationship between brightness and body condition was stronger in more rural landscapes than it was in urban areas," said Amanda Rodewald, co-author of the study and professor of wildlife ecology at Ohio State University's School of Environment and Natural Resources.

"That means urbanization has the potential to disrupt cues that birds have long used to assess quality and choose mates."

Rodewald conducted the study with Todd Jones, an undergraduate student researcher at the time, and Daniel Shustack, a recent doctoral graduate. Their results appear in the current issue of The Wilson Journal of Ornithology.

The researchers studied 129 male and 145 female cardinals that were captured in 13 forests in central Ohio between 2006 and 2008. Each forest was rated as to the amount of urbanization surrounding it, and the researchers compared feather samples from cardinals at each site.

The feathers were photographed and the photos were analyzed by a software program that measured the hue, saturation and brightness of each feather.

They also measured body mass and size of the cardinals to indicate their body condition, or health. Body condition considers how much a bird weighs after adjusting for its frame size.

The researchers did not find any relation between female body condition and plumage brightness and whether they lived in a more urban or more rural area.

For males, brighter feathers were indicative of birds in better condition in rural areas, but were not as indicative in urban areas.

In cardinals, as in some other birds, feather coloration is related to their diet. Diets high in carotenoids -- pigments found in some fruits and other parts of plants -- lead to brighter feather colors.

Previous studies indicate that forests within urban areas have nearly three times the amount of fruit and nearby bird feeders than exist in rural areas. Urban forests have many exotic and invasive species, such as Amur honeysuckle and multiflora rose, that provide abundant sources of carotenoid-rich fruits.

The fact that carotenoid-rich fruits are more available in urban areas, to birds over a wide range of conditions, may be one reason that brighter feathers aren't more indicative of healthy birds in urban areas, Rodewald said. In rural forests, only the highest-quality individuals may have access to carotenoids.

Rodewald is continuing this research by studying how plumage coloration is related to the quality of territories that birds secure and their ability to produce young.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, Schwab Associate Scholarship grant from The Ohio State University, and an undergraduate research grant from the College of Biological Sciences.

Osprey Diary September 4, 2010
Saturday, September 4th, 2010

The fog will burn off. It is quite warm this morn.

On Thursday morning I had the opportunity of going to the base of the tree which provides so much for ”our” osprey nest. I tagged along with some electronics people assessing our system of cameras and security. It was my first stroll over.

We walked through some old sessile oak, through reeds taller than ourselves, avoiding muck underfoot. It was not a long hike through the sweet scent of bog myrtle and overstepping wee clusters of sundew  implanted in soft sphagnum. They were awaiting insects for lunch. And then the air opened up to us humans, into a small patch of magical Caledonia forest. Lush green on earth with orange trunks rising high and out above; Scots pine. Only a few hundred years ago Scotland was thus covered. It was a quiet glade below a nest that one could miss if not aware of its’ presence. Light, bright and full of space.

I searched for the remains of fish, for I knew that at least two had flown overboard, out of the nest this breeding season. I was only hopeful, in that I knew that fox or crows would have carried or eaten the free meal long ago. As the expression goes, “not a sausage”. In my search I located only three osprey feathers.

I also looked at an area by the canal that has had otter presence. There is a tall leaning pine which offers a cavity under its’ roots. Badger also could use these places for security. No activity to report. Perhaps the autumn and winter is the time that otter relocate here. Let us hope.

Habitat is crucial. Let us remember that. Rinch

I love how they describe nature.

Crows are amazing Bobbie, what a fun reading article and some intelligent animals. Thanks.

For Donna, Skittles is the scarlet macaw who has the colors of Skittles candy.  Let's hopehebecomes totally mine.  He is a rescue but his new home is having a baby.  Given scarlets are very noisy and extremely messy it will be hard to care for him.  He and my gray are close, so I hope he can stay.

Bonnie, my brother has a Bl/Gold Macaw, I know how noisy they are. I have to watch him all weekend. He says naughty words!

Here's Harley aka "gutter mouth"

Our Jersey Girl with the broken wing who was found  and rescued just as the tide was about to swallow her, is doing well.  My partner, Mike, went to visit her last Sunday.  She is being moved to an outside flight cage.  It seems there is a chance she could be returned to the wild.

I was supposed to go see her, too, but I went to pick up Skittles, a scarlet macaw, instead.

Let us know and thanks...Skittles?? Cool name.

Thanks, Donna! You know, I read that piece a few times and I still did not get it right! Kept wondering what Michigan had to do with things... paperbag

So. In a nutshell: Alkyonis is in Michigan. And another falcon has been sighted in ROC. Right?!

Actually Bobbie, I thought the same thing when I first read it. I too thought A was in Kodak Park. Yes, she is in Michigan and possibly a Midwest Falcon is in Kodak Park? Role reversal? Now that leaves, "where's Mariah?".

So is there going to be a "road trip" to Michigan soon?

Found this online..DTE Power Plant, also known as the St Clair Power Plant.

The Saint Clair Power Plant is a major coal- and oil-fired power plant owned by Detroit Edison, a subsidiary of DTE Energy. It is located at 42°45′52″N 82°28′21″W / 42.76444°N 82.4725°W / 42.76444; -82.4725Coordinates: 42°45′52″N 82°28′21″W / 42.76444°N 82.4725°W / 42.76444; -82.4725 in St. Clair County, Michigan, on the west bank of St. Clair River. The plant is across M-29 from the newer Belle River Power Plant in East China, Michigan. The first four units of St. Clair were built in 1953–1954 [1]  Since then, three more generating units have been added to the plant. St. Clair was the world's largest power plant after the 1969 addition of unit 7 [2]. The St. Clair Power Plant generates 1982 megawatts in total[3]. It is Detroit Edison's second largest power producer.[4] The power plant has a large impact on the local economy, employing about 400 workers.

Not sure if this is the right one but it's 7 hrs away and around 300 plus miles.
