Tam O'Shanter - Tam O'Shanter is Robert Burns' most famous narrative poem about the problems of bumping into witches at Halloween, particularly when under the influence of drink! The neighbourhood takes its name from the Tam O'Shanter Golf Course (Wikipedia article on Tam O'Shanter-Sullivan, retrieved in May 2008).
While Donna is quite correct about the origin of "Tam O'Shanter," I associate it with a hat of the same name (and origin). They were popular for little girls back in the 30s and 40s (check Shirley Temple) and I had one that I was quite proud of. Fancy new things were a rarity during the war years and that is probably why I remember it. That, and the neat name. Kapi in VT as in this Kapi?

How can it be the end of August already? This morning is cold and msity here at Lowes, a real taste of autumn, but Iâm sure the sunshine will soon burn through! Fionasâ delightful description yesterday gave you a good tate of the changing wildilfe here at the Lowes- it is perhaps the most beautiful times of year in the highlands.
Weâve had almost daily osprey sightings here at Lowes, of birds passing through, which is a nice reminder of how many birds are further north than us are breeding. Thankyou to those of you posting details of other ospreys on route in the UK- fascinating reading.
Excellent news this morning about one of our previous ospreys chicks born here at Lowes, which has been sighted in Dumfries andd Galloway. The female chick was hatched here in 2001 and is a daughter of our wonderful lady and her previous mate âEricâ. Isnât it wonderful to think of her descendants out there helping repopulate new areas of Scotland!

My theory is that the Tiercel has chosen this nest site and is attempting to entice a female. In flies Quest. We know that she moves around this area quite a bit from her transmitter readings, but returns to the power plant. From what we witnessed on Saturday, Quest flew north around 5 pm, leaving the Tiercel to return to "his" spot inside the power plant. According to Carrie and Shaky, she returned the next day. After watching this behaviour and taking into account Quest's continued wandering ways (although she doesn't go too far), I believe that he is more attached to this location than she is. But, I have no doubt that she has taken a liking to this handsome Tiercel. And here I thought she was a Tom Boy! She's a lady, she is.

Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Eastlake power plant cuts not expected to impact resident falcons

Neither FirstEnergy nor the Ohio Division of Wildlife believe that the new reduced generating schedule for the Eastlake coal-fired power plant will impact the peregrine falcon nest located on the plantâs tall smokestack.
Earlier this summer, FirstEnergy announced that the Eastlake plant will see a reduction in generation capacity during nonpeak periods. This reduction will see a drop in the plantâs work force.
However, the falcon nest will remain in place and state wildlife biologists still will have an opportunity to access the tower and scoop up any chicks for banding, company officials say.
âThe short answer is it probably wonât affect the birds next year since typically that time of year weâre operating in the summer mode,â said FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin. âThere will be staff there to maintain the unit. I donât think it will be an issue, and hopefully the plant will return to more normal operating status when the economy picks up.â
Agreeing is Damon Greer, wildlife management administrator for the Wildlife Divisionâs Northeast Ohio district office in Akron.
âAs long as we can still have access to the towerâs elevator we should be fine,â Greer said.
At Eastlake, five falcon eggs were laid this year with four chicks being hatched. The Eastlake site has been used by falcons since 2005 and has seen 24 chicks hatch, Greer said.
âThe nest has averaged four chicks per year. Thatâs above normal, which is interesting since the hatchings have come later than most other nest sites,â he said.
Greer also said that statewide this year the Wildlife Division counted 26 known falcon nests. These nests produced at least 97 eggs, though only 60 chicks were fledged.
âThat number was slightly down, though we did notice across the state a lower hatch rate than in previous years, Greer said. âWe speculate that this may be due to the cold, wet weather we experienced in early spring. But we really donât know.â

Here's a pic of the Tam O'Shatner Park, (the other place Quest was hanging out in). A better place for her. Note to myself: Duh, it's not Shatner, (was thinking of William Shatner when I saw the name). Shanter, sorry. No wonder google said "did you mean Tam O'Shanter Park?"
