NJ’s Endangered & Threatened Birds

While it may come as a surprise to some, birders know New Jersey is home to much more than just cardinals and crows.   The state is home to a wide variety of bird species.  More than 300 different types of birds are seen in the state annually, and in total an incredible 465 species have been recorded in the state!  That’s more than 35 other states.

Osprey Diary August 1, 2010
August 1st, 2010 by rboardman

Dunkeld and the Loch seem eerily quiet this morn despite the calling of “mom” and juvie.

Fresh fish again by “our” reliable male. As I mentioned recently, many of the deliveries are larger these days;  more work and a heavier load for the young. Earlier, I posed that this event was intentional. “Greedy” acts just that. Perhaps some of us noticed “Slim” driving off a crow twice yesterday and a grey heron with terrific intent, whilst “his” sibling gorged away. “Our” female remained on the nest during this event, no doubt very observant. Perhaps we do have a male & female. Practically speaking, we may never know.

The egg, raided by a crow early yesterday morn has been shattered entirely, the integrity of the structure broken. Natural forms and behaviour are truly spectacular. What remains will change along with the fish scales, mandible, pond weed, bark and detritous in the habitat of nest. We remember. As we will the events of days past, on this blog.

All four osprey here this morn, a new month begins. Best for all. Rinchen

Funny thing about Hydrangeas, I was going down the highway today and noticed all these beach umbrellas in front of this house. They had 1 umbrella over each of the 4 Hydrangeas to keep the sun from "melting" the flowers. Looked funny but I'm sure it works. (There ya go Janet, the answer to your problem!).  wave umbrella2

Actually, the shading option has been on my list of things to do.  The garden centers have netting that is designed to provide just enought shade.  I'm convinced that it was the never-ending, life-sucking, heat that beat them up.  I am planning to provide umbrella shade next season once we get the pool in.  I'm guessing it was the heat - I just replaced all of my hanging baskets on the porch - I wasn't the only one, as Greenstreet's had just gotten a new load in.  Thanks for looking out for me, Donna!

Of course Janet

20002  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Website News / Happy 1st Birthday to RFalconcam Forum on: 01-Aug-10, 07:22:40 AM
Well a year zipped by and I remember the frustration I felt when the word was out that KFC was upgrading to a forum. I think my  heart was in my throat. When I decided to come try it, I wasn't too thrilled as I had no clue what I was doing, (thanks Joyce, you helped out immensely.) I kicked and screamed for a while but eventually, (as you can tell by my 5,377 posts), I found my way around. It will never be the same as KFC, this forum seems to be a bit more serious and we lost a lot of good people but we're all  here for 1 reason..**The love for Falcons**. OK, it's not Mariah and Kaver  heart (and I miss them dearly) but we have a new pair, Archer and Beauty. My feelings towards them were also not welcoming at first but as time went on, (just like this forum), they grew on me. We can make this forum like KFC, it can be fun and serious, just look at all the topics. Thank you Shaky for the time and effort you put in to make this forum the success it is today. We just need to get the rest of the the KFC'ers over here. Thanks to all the MODS for making it run smoothly, good job all.  ~~~HAPPY BIRTHDAY~~~.

I have a Limelight® hydrangea, that has finally grown up.  It's about 6' tall and 5' wide, gets about an hour of early morning sun, and is COVERED with blooms.  It's magnificent  happy

Great white shark sighting in cape cod!

Cape Cod officials have closed five miles off of a Chatham beach after a spotter pilot saw three more great white sharks, including one that was swimming roughly 100 yards from a beach party, according to the Associated Press.

Harbormaster Stuart Smith told The Boston Globe that Chatham's South Beach is closed to swimming indefinitely.

The shark, which was estimated to be around 14 feet long, was spotted not far from a cluster of people lounging on the beach. This comes after another shark sighting earlier this week.

Paul Diodati, the director of the State Division of Marine Fisheries, told the Boston Globe that the sharks are probably attracted to the seals swimming near the beach.
