20102  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Callidora question on: 25-Jul-10, 06:03:16 PM
We had rain here this afternoon, the wind really picked up and it poured for about 2 hours..It is actually cool out there now and the birds are all happily singing around the yard...Fall will be here soon and after that comes snow  Sad
I hope we get word on Jemison tomorrow...I am haunting this forum hoping for word on him...

WE had very little rain...not the storm they expected, (I guess you got that), still thick here, no relief..The birds here are probably craving the rain. Glad your cooled FF. Smiley

The pics of that juvenile PEFA are from August, 2009, so it couldn't be a Rochester bird - maybe Syracuse?

ML

Def not a Rochester falcon...granted but pretty cool one was found nearby. I think it's cool that people just assume it was from Kodak/Rochester. Smiley

It is so good to read these great stories about Callidora...I am praying that our sweet little  falcon
Jemison will be healed soon and come back to join her....
Have a good day everyone...still hot here in NJ..one more day of threatened bad storms and then they promise it to be a little cooler....Even the mockingbirds around my house seem exhausted from this heat!  Undecided

I agree with the HEAT in NJ...it's awful. I was hoping for some hail on Fri...like they predicted. Oh well, Fall will be here soon. Come on Jemison, your sister's waiting. Stay cool FF.

20112  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / First Ever, Full Photograph of Rare Bird Taken in Wild (Peru) on: 25-Jul-10, 06:49:32 AM
The first full photograph of an endangered Ochre-fronted Antpitta in the wild was recently taken by American Bird Conservancy Conservation (ABC) Biologist Daniel Lebbin at Peru’s Abra Patricia Bird Reserve.  Lebbin photographed a male a short distance from the Owlet ecolodge, within reserve located in northern Peru at an elevation of about 7,000 feet.

Only a few photographs of an Ochre-fronted Antpitta in the hand were previously available along with a partial photo of the underparts of a wild bird (www.martinreid.com/Misc website/PE10OchrefrontedAntpitta.html).

The four and a half-inch long species was discovered in 1976 and is mostly brown, with heavy black streaks on its pale underparts. It is known from only two localities on isolated ridges of moist montane forest in the east Andes in Amazonas and San MartĂn, in north Peru. It mainly eats invertebrates.

Abra Patricia is designated an Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) site because of the presence of both the antpitta and the endangered Long-whiskered Owlet. ABC and its Peruvian partner Associacion Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN, a leading Peruvian conservation organization) established a 6,739-acre reserve and have been given management rights by the Peruvian government on a further 16,561 acres to protect habitat for these and other threatened birds. The reserve continues to expand with the purchase of the strategically-placed “La Cumbre” property in July thanks to support of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. Additionally, the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory’s Tropical Forests Forever Fund is supporting the purchase of an additional tract of land on the western boundary of the reserve, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is supporting the construction of a research laboratory and administration house currently underway.

The Abra Patricia Reserve is just one of several Latin American bird reserves that are featured on the new website Conservation Birding - www.conservationbirding.org  - which encourages tourists to visit these unique places to see the birds of a lifetime, such as the antpitta, while supporting their conservation.

Osprey Diary, July 25, 2010

It is feeling warm here already…air still a time of writing…

Having been here for two hours all feels “normal”, although I did hear a tawny owl and saw a young song thrush as I walked down to the Visitors Centre this morn.

Two juvies were feeding upon my arrival. Were there two fish delivered, I did see two tails? I am hopeful that this is what occurred, for it does seem that the smaller youngster is not eating as much as we would like. Perhaps having a more bold attitude has rewards, at least when it comes to fresh fish. Less squawking and more action may be our advice. The “greedy” one has flown off a couple of times with fish to eat over the past few days. I hope that perching and eating were well accomplished, for this is another essential skill. Eating at the table (nest) is a luxury for these birds for only a limited time. Perhaps if “greedy” does this more frequently and “our” intrepid male provides a double order the smaller juvie will have time and space to eat.

So, without sounding too much like a cheer leader today let us hope that larger fish or a more bold attitude is the order of the day.

Yes, Mom, continues to preside over the Loch in fine form.

I will continue to work on Cam 2.

I started with the word “normal”. I wonder if we will experience something not so today…Rinchen

dale, I don't think there is documented proof of C catching her own yet. She's giving it her best shot though, stooping on anything that moves, ducks, crows, pigeons even the little guys. She's doing pretty well with food exchanges. Someone will see it soon, I'm sure. A & B are teaching her well.

Still hoping Jemison will come back soon.

5:53am: Dan/MAK/Dana: No falcons yet.
6:11: Beauty and Callidora flying over river between Andrews St Bridge and High Falls. Beauty went West and Callidora landed on brick building East side near Central Ave. There was a food exchange. Callidora now eating.
