Thanks for all the birthday greetings, everyone. It was a very enjoyable 21st birthday for me.

well, you can't be too old. Your long-term memory is terrific!

That was good dale. He's still a young whipper-snapper. (Until next year)!!

Donna told me y'all might be interested to know that I'm having a vacation from
treatments. After three surgeries, three courses of radiation and
I-don't-know-how-many courses of chemo, my doctors have given me a two-month
break to rest and heal. I am feeling a bit stronger, but wondering whether my
stamina will ever catch up to my ambition! Friends keep me going, you all keep
me up with our little feathered friends, and even if I don't wish y'all happy
birthday as the birthdays occur, please know I wish all of you (sorry: all
y'all) happy birthdays.

My primary oncologist says the life expectancy averages for folks with my
disease (epithelioid angiosarcoma) are not very good, but I look at it this way:
For there to be any averages at all, somebody has to live a long time -- and it
might as well be ME! And except for the stupid cancer, I'm in pretty good shape,
and physiologically a lot younger than my 71 years.

Besides, I have my silly PBGV dog Daisy, and my very silly Oriental cats, and
the silly battling mockingbirds outside, and they make me laugh every day. And I
have you all, and I thank you for good thoughts.

With love,
Mary in Charlotte (NC)

Be well Mary and know we are keeping you in our thoughts. Aren't pets amazing?

The Nesting Season Is Definitely Over
July 20, 2010 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:

It has been pretty quiet around the Burlington Lift Bridge lately.  Last week while we were looking for some Peregrine action, the Bridge went up and when it came down, this is what we saw.  Mom must definitely be on vacation as she would never have allowed this is she was in town.  We couldn’t believe our eyes.

!!! Sheraton Chick from 2004 Hurricane is a Dad
July 23, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Frank Butson Reports:

Today at William Osler Heath Centre in Etobicoke,CPF,Ministry of Natural Resources and Osler management and staff took part in the first banding ceremony ever at the facility. The Ontario Stewardship Rangers were in attendance and assisted with the banding.

The extraction was a little tricky today,as one of the chicks, believed to be a male, eluded Mark Heaton of MNR,running around on the ledge out of range. As a result this chick will be banded at a later date if it should be rescued at fledge time.  One chick,a beautiful healthy female was banded today. She will be named in the near future, stay tuned for a coming post.  The particulars of todays banding:

Female,25 days old,weighing in at a very healthy 890 grams,black over black band,23/X.

The chick was very vocal. Ashleigh from the Ontario Stewardship Rangers held the chick, while Mark Heaton from the Ministry of Natural Resources banded the bird.

The adults and proud parents on site were confirmed to be:

Female:named O’Connor, hatched 05/06/07 at the Landmark Building in Summit County Ohio. Banded on 05/24/07 .
Male: named Hurricane, who hatched in 2004 on the Sheraton Centre Hotel in downtown Toronto.

It is always exciting news for the nest site hosts, management, staff and CPF volunteer fledge watchers to hear of the success of one of their birds. Hurricane has been onsite for several years and this is his first successful nest. Last season Hurricane, along with his mate was a proud foster Father to 3 chicks.

20122  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / 'Native' red kites take to the air (Ireland) on: 24-Jul-10, 08:56:02 AM
THE first red kite chicks to hatch for 200 years in Northern Ireland took to the skies yesterday following a spectacular release.
Red kites, which had been extinct in the province, were reintroduced in July 2008, with more released in July 2009.

The final batch of three chicks, the first to hatch in Northern Ireland, were released yesterday in a secret south Down location.

Anne-Marie McDevitt, conservation manager for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, said: “This has been the culmination of three years of work for everyone and so it was great to see. It was a beautiful day.

“However, things are just beginning for us as we need to have at least 50 breeding pairs to give us a sustainable population.

“We can’t just leave the birds as they are, we will continue to track them and their progress as the years pass”.

Of five birds released in earlier years, four chicks have now been hatched, with the total number of birds now standing at 80.

It is hoped that the three chicks released yesterday will now go on to breed and boost the population even further.

Ms McDevitt said of yesterday’s released chicks: “One of the chicks flew out straight away and did a lovely fly around but the other two hesitated a little more.

“When they all got up in the air they looked very natural.”

She said the RSPB had been involved in education initiatives in the area where the birds were released to inform about the importance of the red kite.

“We’ve been speaking to schools and local farmers, really to teach them a bit more about these glorious animals,” she said.

“Red kites are scavengers so they are of absolutely no danger to local livestock and it’s really important that people realise that.”

Ulster Unionist John McCallister, who was involved in the project, said: “It has been truly amazing seeing these birds of prey in the skies in south Down.”

Speaking at the release, agriculture minister Michelle Gildernew said the event was “another great step to enhancing local bi-diversity”.

“The red kite reintroduction programme is a good example of the public and voluntary sectors, alongside farmers, working together to protect the environment and our natural heritage,” she said.

“I am delighted that my department, through the Forest Service, has been able to support this initiative and I look forward to the sustainable future for the new red kite population here.”

The project was a joint initiative between the Welsh Kite Trust and the Golden Eagle Trust, Forest Service, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Down, Newry and Mourne and Banbridge councils, as well as volunteers and local farmers.

Osprey Diary- July 24, 2010
July 24th, 2010 by rboardman

Warm and grey this morn…

I shall start with sending apologies to all for the lack of  live coverage. Late yesterday afternoon our technology let us down. None of the three of us last evening could do what is required to encourage our PC to talk to the internet. I believe that it is something that our head office has control.  We shall continue to work away.

Yesterday morning at my breakfast table overlooking Dunkeld and the broad rushing Tay river, the first bird of the day was an ospey peering into the water. They are often seen over the Tay valley, usually I see shreeching swift first thing. What is missing is the consistant piping of oystercatchers…

I am rambling to note that there are obvious wildlife changes already, albeit mid-summer. “Our” female osprey spends less time on the nest. Just last week she overviewed the bay and nest from a very predicatable perch. She does not frequent this tree as often these days. The juvies had a long bath yesterday, but still, oddly to me occasionally lie flat in the nest as if they have forgotten how to perch. Often, they soar ever higher and farther away from the Loch for longer and longer periods. The male continues to briefly provide his perch drops to the nest, and then is gone…I have witnessed “our” female tearing across the Loch after intruders lately. It is hard to believe that she was poorly when I watch now. She flies well and I am hopeful that she will successfully fly south. Of course we all are wondering when that will be. Personally I think that it may well be by the end of the month.
