Eagle Nest Updates Spring Update #7 - July 15, 2010
Our young eagle has been flying around the nest area now since its first flight since on or around June 13th. While the bird has learned to fly, it has only started to learn to hunt, leaving it often times in the nest yelling to its parents for dinner.
Note the turtle shells in the nest. Turtles have been easy prey this season for the eagles and we have counted at least four shells (probably more) in the nest.
With its rudimentary hunting skills, the young eagle will soon head off away from its Shepherdstown home, not to be seen again in these parts. Our adults will very likely hang around for the rest of the summer, and in the Fall begin to tidy up the nest for the next nesting season.
This is the nest that lost the 3 eggs in the snowstorm back in Feb. They had a 2nd clutch, 2 eggs, 1 hatched.

7/21/2010 :: Blue Band Loses Battle with Trichomoniasis Due to the trichomoniasis infection, blue lost weight and became more susceptible to secondary infections. He had intestinal parasites, which cleared up with medication, and other secondary infections. He lost weight, and never returned to his weight at the age of banding. His feather development was retarded, and he was not preening himself properly. All of these are the consequences of the initial trich infection. It is indeed a nasty disease. As a result of these conditions, euthanizing became the necessary course of action. He's been in rehab since June 1st. Poor baby.

Never fear! Actually, folks are out a lot, watching even without the official calendar! Dan S has never signed up for a watch but he and MAK are out from about 5-5:30 AM and Carol is out after work until about 7. Brian is out during the day and then the rest of the gang is out during various times! We also have the "support personnel"-- people who work around the area and let the other watchers know if something is going on. We're really lucky to have such a group!
Okey dokey then...thanks jeanne. Yes, lots are out at all different times for sure and MAK, (what a swell watcher she turned out to be), hasn't missed a morning since the Watcher's meeting. Sometimes she wakes me up with her text messages, (my new alarm clock). How long has Dan been doing this, (since Cabot and Mariah days), he's another up real early. Guess that's when all the action starts. That would be me right out there with them. If we had 3 or more hatches this year, things would be hopping for sure. You would need a person on every building in Rochester. That's a big city to be running around in. Thanks all you watchers, we haven't lost a falcon yet, well, except for the jail bird.
