Mysterious bird eaten by peregrine falcon in downtown Syracuse identified

While walking to the office this morning in downtown Syracuse, I looked down on the ground at Hanover Square and noticed an unusual-looking bird wing on the ground.

It was the remains of a bird that apparently had been killed and eaten by one of the peregrine falcons nesting on top of the nearby State Tower Building.
In the downtown's "circle of life," peregrines routinely feed on pigeons, which frequent city streets in great numbers. It's not uncommon to find their remains (bones, feathers, etc.) on the ground at Hanover Square and on nearby streets and sidewalks.
But this wing I found had a much different look. There were streaks of yellow on the upper wing, and more pronounced yellow feathers visible on the bottom part.

I took pictures of the wing and forwarded them to Laura Erickson, author and former science editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Her thoughts?

"Northern flicker," she said. "The eastern form of the species is called a yellow-shafted flicker for obvious reasons--obvious as shown in the photos, at least."
According to allaboutbird.org, "Flickers are fairly large woodpeckers with a slim, rounded head, slightly down-curved bill, and long, flared tail that tapers to a point."

Their habitat? "Look for flickers in open habitats near trees, including woodlands, edges, yards, and parks."

But how did this woodpecker end up meeting a grisly death in downtown Syracuse? The website provided a clue: "The northern flicker is one of the few North American woodpeckers that is strongly migratory. Flickers in the northern parts of their range move south for the winter, although a few individuals often stay rather far north."

Was this bird just migrating through downtown Syracuse, minding its own business when a peregrine took it down for a meal?

"It's a perfectly reasonable speculation," Erickson said. " We find flicker wings and feathers along Lake Superior during migration every year. They're very predictable fliers with a lot of meat, so they seem to be a preferred meal for hawks and falcons."

Amazing footage coming out on Twitter via ‪#‎BirdTrack‬ of a flock of migrants taking refuge on a ship in the Baltic Sea. Four sparrowhawks and a short-eared owl flew in to take advantage of the food source.

Strengthening the Bond- Weekly Nest Notes

The early mornings have been filled with vocal exchanges. Harriet and M15 have been spending more and more time together working on the nest and practicing their bonding/mating.  Their flights off the nest tree and away from the area together may be hunting and fishing expeditions. Harriet is possibly showing M15 the secret fishing places along the way. There are many things to be readied before eggs will be laid. Harriet continues to exert what looks like dominance over M15. Harriet needs to be assured that M15 will be a loyal mate and provide for her and their young.

M15 has been honing his skills on branch and stick delivery to the nest and Harriet voices her approval. Harriet continues to bring her favorite pine boughs. The nest is looking inviting and hopefully ready to welcome babies. M15 is diligent in defending the territory. Several immature Eagles ventured into the territory and another pair of Eagles perched nearby from time to time. As other birds soar through the pasture both Harriet and M15 vocalize their warnings and make it known that this is their domain. M15 escorted a beautiful young Eagle out of the area in his patrolling sweep of the pasture.

Harriet was viewed spending time in the nest overnight which seemed unusual. In the past Harriet was seen for longer periods of time in the nest when she was ready to lay eggs and after they were laid. She may have been taking advantage of a restful night’s sleep as M15 watched over the territory. At day break Harriet was on with her day and all was fine. With the cameras and 24 hour access we are learning daily there is not a “usual” way things go in the Eagle world. Harriet knows her role well and continues to educate M15 and the viewers. May we continue to watch the progression of the lives of Harriet and M15 as their bond grows stronger and trust the ways of the Eagle.

Don't get too used to it. The camera is only there because I had forgotten about the lip of the platform when I went to mount it in the "Cam 4" position. I couldn't mount the support post with the lip in the way. I'll be better prepared the next time.

Oh man, I like this view!  Sad

I agree!

Though we might not think it's so great if they do nest there and we can't see the youngsters on the far railing...

Or when it's covered in crud from being an inch off the deck.

Peek-A-Pooh?????
