The downy owl chick flew into the den of the Asiatic lioness Indu at Paignton Zoo in Devon but was completely ignored by the snoozing cat dozed.

The owl, which is just a few inches high, was dwarfed by the 180 kilogram lion. The enclosure at Paignton Zoo is open and it is thought the owlets parents had built their nest in one of the trees inside it.

The tiny owl had fluttered down next to the four-foot-tall lion's right front paw as it ventured out on one of its first flights.

Sheila Hassanien captured the moment while visiting the zoo and seeing the two animals together through the perimeter fence.

Keeper Lucy Manning said: "One day the chick just turned up on the ground. Indu peered at it for a while but then lost interest. I think it was too small to eat and we believe it got away."

A zoo spokesman said: "Some people suggested we should go in to fetch the owl but no-one is allowed into the paddock while the lions are loose."

Role Model: Kaver, Tiercel, male Peregrine Falcon

Reason:  While female (Mariah) incubates the eggs, Kaver hunts to feed both he and Mariah.  When Mariah is not incubating, Kaver takes over.  Sometimes he doesn't want to stop.  Mariah stares at him and eventually he gets the idea...........

OK.  Who's next to continue the "Reason".   happy

Kaver: The best Falcon dad...a great protector...always on guard..fed kids more than needed...QTP2T...prey wrangler...carried more than his weight..and I miss him so much!  heart Happy Father's Day Kaver..(where ever you are)  crying

20892  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Hurt peregrine falcon gets private plane from Guernsey BBC on: 16-Jun-10, 10:26:30 PM
A peregrine falcon injured in Guernsey has been flown in a private plane for treatment in Hampshire.

The female bird, which is unable to fly, was found hopping in the road two weeks ago with its wings coated in an unknown substance.

It was flown to Southampton Airport on Tuesday and is now being looked after at Hawk Conservancy Trust in Andover.

The falcon has already lost feathers from both of its wings and may have to undergo a feather transplant.

The alternative solution is to allow the bird to moult naturally before releasing it back into the wild, a process which is likely to take six or seven months.

Conservationists initially thought the bird had been caught in a glue trap but an earlier inspection by a vet at the trust revealed that the damage had been caused by an oily substance.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Buffalo is about to keep better track of one of its falcon families.

There's been a peregrine falcon baby boom here in Buffalo in the past few weeks. And the latest family of five chicks were banded Wednesday at the newest nesting site at the Central Terminal.

Department of Environmental Conservation Wildlife Biologist Connie Adams and her team brought the five chicks down in buckets. There is one female and four males. Adams examined them and fitted them with special bands that will identify them for the rest of their lives. The DEC established this nest at the Central Terminal in November.

"We will be quite content, actually, if there was only one pair of nesting peregrine falcons in this vicinity. Peregrines need about a one mile radius around their nest site that they maintain aggressively as a territory. So they would defend their nest from any peregrines. So any peregrines in the area would have to establish elsewhere and, in fact, Buffalo has seven pairs of nesting peregrines, the most of any city in upstate New York," explained Adams.

These falcon chicks will leave the nest in about three weeks. And in honor of the neighborhood, these "Polish falcons" were born in, the female is named "Polonia" and one of the males is named "Stash."

You can learn more about peregrine falcons from the DEC here.

20894  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / 2 falcon chicks are safe after 11-story fall (Macomb County) on: 16-Jun-10, 10:18:41 PM
Two Peregrine falcon chicks that hatched last month at the old Macomb County Building in Mt. Clemens will be watched by a Monroe rehabilitator for about a week after they safely navigated to the ground today after a gust of wind may have caught their wings while they were exercising them.

Harwell and Martha were found unharmed on the ground near the administration building between 9 and 10 a.m., county spokeswoman Lisa Martino said.

The pair lofted about 11 stories, but didn't have the muscular strength to fly up to their nest, said Christine Becher, southeast Michigan nesting Peregrine falcon coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

She doesn't know who found the pair, but a first responder who lives nearby was notified and called Becher. A volunteer went out to check on the pair.

Becher said the pair's brother, Packard, is hunkered down on a nearby ledge. He may have made a good flight Tuesday and this morning, she said.

Becher said the chicks are nearing the time that they will fly on their own. They flap their wings to practice, like exercising. Harwell and Martha may have been doing that when a gust of wind caught them and they floated away, Becher said.

"On the ground, they're kind of stranded. The parents can't help them," she said. "It happens. It's pretty common."

Becher said the chicks can be returned to the nest, but she was a little reluctant to do so today, concerned that another gust of strong wind might take them out of the nest again. They will be with a rehabilitator that the DNR uses and will exercise their wings to make them strong enough to endure an upward flight and to fly without incident.

Becher said the pair then will be returned to their parents, Hathor and Nick, who will accept them back into the nest.

I just had to look at Lou's pictures again to refresh my memory...the front by the main cam is the furthest drop.  The south side isn't as bad as it seems.  Not great, but there is a ledge not that far below.

And the surrounding neighborhood isn't half bad either...

(again, thanks Lou!)

Lots of landing choices at various heights if they have enough wing power to float and stay out of the street.

let's hope they keep away from the Main Cam drop.  nono no
