I am sure there are many other examples of good dads I have seen two in the bird world.
The thick-billed murre nests on rocky cliffs in Hudson Bay and other places. The female incubates the single egg. The male brings food and when the chick is a few weeks old, the male, in the water below the cliff, calls to the chick and induces it to leap from the cliff. The male attends to the chick and teaches it the ways of the murre. The female, whose job is done, flies off in a great flock with other females!
The female jacana, found in Central America and throughout the Southern Hemisphere, is more extreme. She lays the eggs and splits! Dad does all the rest!

Recent News Title 6/16/2010 :: Blue Blue has gained a little more weight; he now weighs 540 grams. However, he is also being treated for parasites and a secondary protozoan infection. Because of these conditions it is best to keep him in wildlife rehabilitation. The more time that passes, the less likely it is he'll be released to the ledge. If later, he does recover fully, he may be released at another nest site where nestlings are fledging later. If he does not develop 100% strength and vitality he may remain in captivity for educational purposes.
Poor baby.

Peregrines were in the news again tonight! WKBW-TV in Buffalo had a great segment on tonight's news about all the Peregrines in the Buffalo area showing clips of the banding of the Central Terminal eyases and Statler before and during her release. They interviewed a woman from the DEC (I think the last name was Adams) who talked of Peregrines and their speed. They showed a clip of a man talking about "just trying to get a closer look at the nest" when the mother Peregrine attacked him. Then the reporter named all the nest sites in the Buffalo area, how many pairs there are in NYS and how many hatched last year in the state. They mentioned that the location between the 2 Great Lakes is becoming an attraction for more and more Peregrines each year. Kudos to "KB" for the great segment and making more people aware of these wonderful birds! WOW...cool.....thanks!

I just copy and pasted the links into my explorer bar and the photos opened fine.
The bird looks like a British Goldfinch to me. Very cool.
I looked up this Bird and it sure looks like one to me. Don't know what it's doing in my area ( about 25 miles east of the nest box ) might be someone's pet Bird. I'll keep food out for him. Hope he stays around. ginha Wow ginha, yeah keep em there...away from the nest box! We saw today what Archer can catch
