I'm waiting for "the yes men", inventors of the survivaball, to come up with a solution.

We can submit our own solutions to the Coast Guard, btw,  http://www.govexec.com/dailyfed/0610/060710rb1.htm.  My suggestion is to plug the spill with BP executives.  Shaky, you can submit directly to Larry.

lol   I like the BP executive idea!   wave

It could work....Hmm! It's unbelievable that no one can come up with and idea except Chrissy!  2thumbsup
20931  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Morris Plains crews rescue fawn that fell into storm drain My local paper on: 16-Jun-10, 07:17:19 AM
MORRIS PLAINS — Emergency crews spent two hours on Tuesday morning to rescue a frightened fawn that had fallen into a Sunrise Drive storm drain.

A passerby spotted the fawn in the middle of the street around 10 a.m. and attempted to coax the tiny deer to the side of the road, police said. Instead, the firghtened fawn ran to the other side toward a grassy area but fell through a curbside storm drain in front of 18 Sunrise Drive, Lt. Tom D'Ambola said.

The deer fell about 10 feet into the drain, then crawled another 15 feet into the sewer line, he said.

The Morris Plain Fire Department initially tried to get the fawn out of the drain by flushing the sewer line with a hose from the other side of the pipe, about 250 feet away. That didn't work.

Then, a piece of road department equipment was used to flush the line, which prompted the fawn to move, police said.

Patrolman Jeff Hochman, who had climbed down into the drain with a snare, caught the fawn, which was released into nearby woods.

D'Ambola called the rescue "'heartwarming" and is grateful to all who were involved in the rescue.

Among them were Hochman, Patrolman Bruce Rapp, Sgt. Mark Ewert, 1st Assistant Fire Chief Don Geary, Road Department Superintendent Joe Signorelli and Assistant Superintendent Ben Signorelli.

The effort took about two hours.

'They did an excellent job," D'Ambola said.

A Sunrise Drive neighbor, Claire Simon, 72, said she was walking her poodle when she spotted emergency workers at the scene. She could hear the fawn crying.

"Just like a little baby," she said. "It was heart-wrenching."

Simon said she feels fortunate to live in a town where so many people cared to stop and offer help.

"I felt we were very blessed that we live in such a peaceful area and we had all these people to help a helpless animal."

!!! Malik’s First Sleep Over
June 15, 2010 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:

Malik, the first fledge, will have his first sleep over at the King Edward Hotel. He spent his first day on the roof of the hotel and early in the evening, he made his way over to the base of the chimney.  Zera, still unfledged had a healthy meal around 8:15p.m. and then settled down out of sight for the night. After the feed and as it turned dark, the adult female was seen on the nest ledge.

Malik, was seen lying down at the base of the chimney on the east side of the hotel at dark.

Our little Warrior princess is growing with leaps and bounds.  I stopped briefly yesterday AM on my drive into work, and she is already starting to flap a lot.  Seneca and Cheyenne were both on the bridge railing below the nest, about 8 feet from where we drive into work.  I plan on sharing much more about this little one, and for many years to come about Seneca.

Oh thank you so much elimac...wonderful you get to see Seneca and family. Will be looking forward to your reports. Welcome to our Forum.   bow clap

20936  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Bald Eagle that survived shotgun blast released on: 16-Jun-10, 06:31:56 AM
ASTORIA, Ore. - A 5-year-old Bald Eagle injured with bird shot and found on a beach near Rainier, Ore. on the Columbia River was released Saturday after being rehabbed for 6 weeks at Wildlife Center of the North Coast.

The injured female was found in Rainer near Dibblee Point Beach. X-rays revealed multiple shotgun BB’s in her head, neck, body, and both wings. One of the BB’s was near her left eye and caused her to go blind in that eye.

WCNC officials say the eagle adjusted well to her blindness and was able to negotiate the Center’s 150-foot flight cage without problems.

They say she was so wild and unhappy in captivity that she faced euthanasia. But on her release, she flew well and landed high in a Douglas fir and was promptly dive bombed and screeched at by a pair of Red Tailed Hawks “welcoming” her back into the wild.

20937  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Fledgling red-tailed hawk hit by car on: 16-Jun-10, 06:25:49 AM
PORTLAND – One of the fledgling red-tailed hawks that people watched grow up on the kgw.com raptor cam this year has had a major setback.

He got hit by a car on the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge last Friday, according to Bob Sallinger, Conservation Director for the Audubon Society of Portland.

A veterinarian at the Audubon Wildlife Care Center examined the hawk and said there was extensive swelling on the right side of his head and damage to his right eye. Veterinarian Deb Sheaffer also said the young red-tail was favoring one of his legs.

“Eye injuries are particularly tough on raptors. They count on their amazing vision to hunt. Even minor eye injuries can put a bird of prey at a huge disadvantage. We will know more in the coming days,” explained Sallinger.

This was the second recent visit for this same hawk at the wildlife center. The first time, the red-tail was picked up after playing tag with cars on Burnside Street. In that incident, the hawk was given a full exam and appeared unscathed.

He was relocated to his parents’ nest high on a fire escape in downtown Portland and quickly re-adapted to life outside the wildlife center.

Sallinger said the veterinarian knew it was the same hawk in the Hawthorne Bridge incident because they had put an identification band on his leg.

June 13, 2010: Update on injured fledgling

Audubon's veterinarian, Deb Sheaffer reports that the injured hawk is making good progress. His prognosis is still guarded but he is much more alert today and the eye shows reduced uveitus (swelling and irritation to the middle layer of the eye). It will be sometime before we are able to determine to what degree the eye has been permanently impaired.

Hawks can see up to eight times better than humans. This is what allows them to be such effective hunters. Their eyes are tremendous in proportion to the size of their skulls when compared to humans---if human eyes were as large as hawks relative to our skulls they would be close to the size of tennis balls.

Besides a high level of visual acuteness, hawks also have some other neat adaptations. There is a bony shelf that runs above the eyes called the superciliary ridge. Biologists believe that this bony structure serves to shade the eye from sun glare and also serves a protective function. Hawks also have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane. This membrane is transparent and serves to clean and moisten the eye almost like a windshield wiper while the hawk is in flight.

Many folks have wondered what will happen to the red-tail if in fact it turns out to not be releasable. Right now our only focus is on release. We don't even contemplate other scenarios until all release options have been exhausted. Our rehab center treats about 3000 wild animals each year, including 200-300 birds of prey, with the objective of setting them free back in the wild.  If birds are not releasable we do have some permanent non-releasable educational birds at our facility. We also place non-releasable birds at other facilities, zoos, nature centers, etc. There is an extensive process that we go through to make sure that the bird is adaptable to life in captivity and that an appropriate facility is available. However we will cross that bridge when we come to it...Personally I hate seeing wild birds in cages. Hopefully we will put this one back in the sky.  Sad
