21409  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / 2010 - Syracuse Four on: 24-May-10, 07:06:47 AM
Syracuse, NY - Groucho and Fancy, Syracuse’s resident peregrine falcons, are the proud parents to two sons and two daughters: Pilgrim, Chinook, Hiawatha and Chase.

The four falcon chicks — technically called eyases — were taken from their nest near the top of the State Tower Building in Syracuse on Thursday to be examined and banded by state Department of Environmental Conservation biologists. All got a clean bill of health.

“It was refreshing to see two males because the past couple of years we’ve seen mostly females,” DEC spokeswoman Diane Carlton said.

Chase, one of four peregrine falcon babies living in a nest at the top of the State Tower Building in Syracuse, protests as Bonnie Parton, a wildlife technician with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, and Mike Allen, a retired wildlife technician, examine it for parasites before attaching two identifying bands on its legs.

http://php.democratandchronicle.com/blog/birds/?p=2918  Not so nice pics  Sad

Now that oil from the massive leak in the Gulf of Mexico is washing ashore, the impact on birds and other wildlife is becoming more and more evident. Here are recent photos that the Associated Press has been moving on its wire service. The captions are those provided by AP. I include photos of birds that, as yet, have not been harmed, but are clearly in the path of the encroaching oil. Their very beauty further illustrates what we stand to lose when we are so negligent in our stewardship of the environment.
21411  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Hummingbird feeder owners asked to watch for bats (AZ) on: 24-May-10, 06:55:24 AM
TUCSON - If you have a hummingbird feeder at your home, wildlife officials are asking for your help to watch for bats.

Arizona Game and Fish Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local researchers are seeking volunteers from throughout southern Arizona to monitor use of their home hummingbird feeders by nectar-feeding bats.

"If your hummingbird feeders mysteriously drained during the night last summer, the midnight raiders may have been bats," says AGFD Regional Supervisor Raul Vega.

"Most of Arizona's 28 bat species eat insects, but two species drink nectar and eat pollen from plants such as the saguaro and agaves. These bats are becoming common visitors to southern Arizona hummingbird feeders in late summer and early fall," adds Vega.

In southern Arizona, there are two bat species that consume nectar: the lesser long-nosed bat, which is listed as federally endangered; and the Mexican long-tongued bat, an Arizona species of concern. These gentle, beneficial pollinators live in caves and mines. During summer nights, they travel in search of food, and over time, have found their way to hummingbird feeders in southern Arizona. The bats are migratory and return to Mexico in the fall.

The use of hummingbird feeders by bats has been documented in southern Arizona for many years. In 2006, large numbers of bats were detected foraging on hummingbird feeders in the urban areas surrounding the Tucson basin. Bats visiting the feeders is now being detected more widely in southern Arizona, and volunteers are currently monitoring them as far north as Dove Mountain near Pinal County and as far south as Nogales in Santa Cruz County.

Habitat conservation planning by the City of Tucson and the Town of Marana has spearheaded these efforts to evaluate potential effects to these bat species in the Tucson basin.

Those willing to participate in the project, conducted in partnership with City of Tucson and Town of Marana, should contact Adjunct Professor Ted Fleming of the University of Arizona at:

Today using a hardcore DIY camera rig, I peeked at the nest ledge. The camera was shaky, extended on about 20 feet of pole.

While peeking, Mom remained on the ledge quietly alarm-calling at the camera but otherwise calm and trying to mantle the young. They were in front of her, and while a head count was difficult, it appears there are 3 unless more are underneath. I would guess they're ~1 week old or less. No egg shells or fragments were visible, but a green-banded pigeon foot was.

Please read the entry directly below this for useful Species at Risk and Stewardship info and resources.

Additional posts will be made in the days to come.

 And There Were Two
May 20, 2010 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:

Bill and I spent a couple of hours at the Lift Bridge yesterday and I’m very happy to confirm that we were able to see two little white heads.  Are there more?  We will keep watching.  Mom was trying to shelter the little ones from the hot noon day sun, but they still managed to escape to peer over the edge.

May 21, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:

Just as I had anticipated, all three chicks are now out of the nest tray and free to wobble the nest ledge. I arrived this morning just in time for a morning snack. They are really impressive looking birds.

Look how big they are!
