21422  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / BIRDS HAVING A CRAFTY CIGGY...THAT’S SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT (UK) on: 23-May-10, 02:01:21 PM
Sneaking a smoke

THEY obviously didn’t read the health warnings. This pair of hoodie crows were caught on camera sneaking crafty stolen cigarettes.

The ringleader here was spotted flying overhead in the Maldives with a cigarette packet in its beak.

British tourists Judie and Tony Ellis snapped it perching on a thatched roof and pulling the cigarettes out for its mates. Like seasoned smokers, the crows held them by the filter end and strutted about, the cigarettes dangling from their beaks.

Judie, who lives in aptly-named Crowborough, East Sussex, said: “The crow was taking the cigarettes out. The other crows were picking them up. It was amazing that they seemed to have them in their beaks the right way round.â€

British Trust for Ornithology spokesman Paul Stancliffe said: “Crows are intelligent and very inquisitive. Tobacco is vegetable matter, so maybe they thought they could eat it.â€

Researchers claim crows are as clever as apes because they make and use tools and even play tricks on each other.

The Indian House Crows on the Maldives resemble the UK’s hooded species.

But they have not made the big leap which would confirm them as geniuses, not bird brains. They are not yet able to use a lighter – which is good news for the owners of thatched houses.
21423  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Chef kills swan on: 23-May-10, 01:58:52 PM
A chef has appeared in court charged with killing and cooking a swan in a case set to test the ancient law that all 30,000 wild swans in Britain belong to the Queen,

Mohammed Miah, 29, of Bedford, was allegedly found with blood and feathers on his hands, while the caracass of the bird was found in a black bin bag.

Miah was charged after an investigation by police and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
He is accused of stealing the swan from the Crown and killing it in Bedford during the early hours of May 10.

Simon Cocksedge, defending, at Bedford Magistrates Court asked for the case to be adjourned for time to research the law relating to swans.

"The case raises interesting legal points whether the swan belongs to anybody and whether it needs to belong to somebody to be stolen, and whether the Queen is the owner of the bird," he said.

Miah was released on bail until May 27.

Carefully hatched plan: New arrivals a major boost to biodiversity efforts

THE SUCCESSFUL hatching of the first red kite chicks to be born here in over two centuries has been hailed as a significant achievement in the programme to restore Irish biodiversity.

Five chicks have been confirmed in two nests in Co Wicklow, according to scientists with the Golden Eagle Trust Red Kite Project. The exact location of the nests is not being disclosed in order to minimise threats to the birds.

The red kite once flourished in Ireland but became extinct in the 18th century due to persecution, poisoning and woodland clearance. In 2007, a project began to reintroduce the bird and, so far, 81 red kites have been imported from Wales and released in Co Wicklow. A similar project is under way in Northern Ireland.

Most of the birds have survived, and some have migrated to counties as far away as Kerry and Leitrim.

The birds first bred in two nests last year but neither produced any young. This year, nine breeding attempts were discovered, and six of these still have females incubating eggs. Three others have failed. Three chicks have been seen in one nest and two in another.

Minister for the Environment John Gormley, who visited the project yesterday to view progress, described the hatching of the chicks as a milestone for the project and an excellent example of an Irish biodiversity project.

The aim of the project is to produce a self-sustaining population of red kites, according to the project manager Damien Clarke. “It is my hope that the red kite will, with time, once again be a common sight throughout Ireland. These Irish-bred chicks are the first sign of that becoming a reality.â€

The red kite, so called because of its reddish-brown body and tail, has a wingspan of up to 1.8 metres. The bird nests in trees and often lines its nests with scraps of cloth and paper, a practice noted by Shakespeare. Their prey includes small mammals, crows, pigeons, insects and worms.

The bird survived in Wales, though at one point there were only two known breeding pairs there. Today, there are about 600 breeding pairs in Wales alone.

National Biodiversity Week, which began yesterday, is being marked by a number of events in national parks and other venues, including bat walks and dawn chorus meetings. More information is available on noticenature.ie.
