Am thrilled we get to watch Mariah & Kaver's great-grandkids.  happy  And thanks to all who made it happen, especially with the streaming video.

I can't remember - who named Archer? And what does his name signify?

Thanks,
Helen P.

Archer was born at the ADM Mill in Port Colborne, Ontario and ADM stands for Archer Daniels Midland Mill where I always thought he got his name from.

Wow...cool....thank Kris!  clap I figured they had to supply names from some where to put in that hat!

I was still trying to get over what owlet #2 was doing with its head in the previous post's picture, and now THIS ... careful study of the first of these photos leads me to suspect that the bird has its head turned around 180 degrees.  Am I right?
Careful study of the other photo leads me to believe that a large fish is trying to enter the nestbox.

hysterical yup, that's a fish alright! Pretty funny dale.  steff

Hey Donna!

Would you believe that this type of thing can even happen in protected areas?  We (the L.A. Zoo) have endangered whistling ducks in our aviary.  The female laid a clutch of 9 eggs and would you believe...

ONE OF THE ZOO VISITORS STOLE 4 OF THEM!!!!

The good news is that we have 5 healthy ducklings!

 wave

Wow Judi, I guess NO eggs are safe. Pretty sad people have to steal them for their own greed. Glad you have 5 though.  Congrats!

THIEVES stole rare birds eggs from a nest in the Thornhill area.

A police wildlife officer said he is “totally aghast” at the theft of the wild peregrine falcon eggs.

It is thought that they could find their way onto the black market and be bought by collectors.

Nests in the region are regularly inspected by bird protection groups to monitor for the presence of eggs.

It was during a routine check that the nest was found to be empty.

In Britain, there has been a recovery of populations of peregrine falcon eggs since the crash of the 1960s. This is mainly due to the conservation and protection work led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Constable John Jamieson, force wildlife crime co-ordinator said: “I am totally aghast that such an incident has been reported to us and would like to remind the public that an offence against wildlife is a crime and will on all occasions be investigated vigorously.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police on 0845 600 5701 or any police officer. Information can also be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Whoa, this is getting crazy!

WINDSOR, Ont. — A third peregrine falcon chick was spotted at the Ambassador Bridge this week.

“We got confirmation on three chicks,” Windsor Peregrine Watch Team site co-ordinator Dennis Patrick said Wednesday.

The chicks are about 19 days old. Because watch team members have to use binoculars and because of the angle of looking up at the high ledge, the team couldn’t confirm there were three chicks until Monday.

“They are growing so astoundingly fast,” Patrick said. “When you see them in the evening you go ‘I can’t believe how much they grew this day.’”

In 21 days, the chicks will be adult size and ready for their first flights, he said.

Adult peregrine falcons Freddie and Voltaire are hunting for food to feed their youngsters. Freddie brings food and Voltaire feeds the chicks, Patrick said.

The Windsor Peregrine Watch Team is monitoring the nest and will be there especially for the first flights in June. About 80 per cent of peregrine falcon chicks don’t survive but teams of trained volunteers can reduce the mortality rate to about 20 per cent.

Celebrity downtowners Kate and Spencer are parents again, maintaining their high style from their 53rd-story digs while Atlantans wonder from below how they live so well.

The secret? Fresh air, exercise and plenty of raw bird.

Kate and Spencer, two rare peregrine falcons named after film stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy for their long-running romance, have three new additions at their terrace dwelling high atop Sun Trust Plaza. Outside the 53rd-floor offices of McKenna Long & Aldridge, a large planter box containing several small bushes provides an ideal nesting site to raise their three young hatchlings. It is the fourth brood produced by the couple, which mate for life.

Peregrines historically nested on remote cliff sites throughout the Appalachians, but now, the birds increasingly find skyscrapers, bridges or other large structures suitable habitat to hunt for food and raise young.

“Fledglings learning to hunt are like kittens,” said Georgia Department of Natural Resources biologist Jim Ozier.  “They instinctively chase and attempt to capture whatever flies by, often starting with insects.  From this, they quickly become adept at pursuing and killing pretty much any bird smaller than themselves.”

Because of eggshell thinning from pesticides and PCB poisoning, eastern populations of the peregrine were eliminated from the wild in the 1940s. The last known wild nest in Georgia was in Cloudland Canyon in the northwest corner of the state. Regulations on pesticides and protection of the birds have helped produce a slow comeback since they began being reintroduced nearly 40 years ago.

Since 1972, several hundred peregrines have been released across the eastern United States, including northeastern Georgia and even from the Georgia Power building.

There are as many as 450 pairs of peregrines currently in the eastern U.S., according to Ozier. Currently, there are only two known peregrine nests in Georgia, Kate and Spencer and another pair atop the Four Seasons in Midtown.

The birds can be seen flying around Peachtree Street, gathering food -- pigeons and unlucky songbirds -- for their young, which are now just leaving the nest. The public can also peek in for a live view.

A webcam, courtesy of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, The Garden Club of Georgia and McKenna, Long, & Aldridge LLP, gives a birds-eye view of the peregrines. Log on to http://www.georgiawildlife.com/node/615.
