Some very old Buffalo news!

Marcel Gahbauer reports:  Today Mark Nash and I were fortunate enough to be invited to attend the banding of the Buffalo peregrines, conducted by Chris Nadareski of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Mark Kandel of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).  Also present were Barbara Loucks from the Endangered Species Unit of the DEC, Bill Burch of the Buffalo Ornithological Society, Rick Stevens from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and John Wichrowski of Channel 2 News in Buffalo.

The roughly three-week-old chicks were taken directly from the back of the nest box to a makeshift banding table in the maintenance room of the Statler Hotel.   The three chicks were all in good health, and handled the situation very well - although they were lively and feisty, they were rather quiet for the most part, and did not appear to be overly stressed by the banding.

The two females and one male each received a black US Fish and Wildlife band on their right leg, and a black over red band (with a unique two character code) on their left leg.  Following the banding of each bird, Chris and Mark examined it for lice, and for overall health.

Observers in the street and in the levels of the Statler building below the nest reported that both adults flew back and forth while the chicks were inside being banded.  Upon the completion of the banding, we returned to the street ourselves, and watched both adults visit the nest box in the next little while.  All in all it was a thoroughly successful banding today, and we are glad to have been a part of it.   Eight photos from the banding have been put up in the Buffalo Gallery.

Mark Kandel reports:  The female that nested in this same box last year was found dead on a nearby roof top on April 5. Her injuries suggest that she was killed by another raptor. We are assuming she was killed by the pair currently occupying the nest box.

However, there is also good news.  Two of the eggs had hatched by April 23 (see Photo Gallery), and as of today we have three chicks and one unhatched egg.   It is likely that the new female laid all of these eggs, as I had a brief look at the female on the nest on March 23, and her leg band colours did not match with last year's female, who may have gotten killed when she tried to reclaim her former nest site.

Tuesday March 23, 1999
Mark Kandel reports: The Buffalo peregrines are ahead of schedule. On Monday March 22 there were three eggs in the nest. We installed the camera on that day. We had not expected to find eggs so soon. The female stayed on the eggs as the hole was drilled in the box and the camera mounted. We did have to flush her briefly to remove a panel from inside the box to complete the installation. She and the male returned after about five minutes. She took about 15 minutes to settle back in and resume incubating.  We plan to have the monitor set up for the public tomorrow. For now the monitor will be in the Statler Towers in the window of the US Airways ticket office on West Genesee Street. Funding for the camera and installation came from the Buffalo Ornithological Society.

Mark Nash reports: Today I visited Buffalo to meet with Mark Kandel of the New York Department of Conservation and Bill Burch of the Buffalo Ornithological Society.  We discussed the possibility of installing a video camera overlooking last year's nest site, and the logistics associated with this.  All parties are interested in pursuing this project, and we hope to have more information available soon.

Linda Woods Reports:

Just as I had anticipated, all three chicks are now out of the nest tray and free to wobble the nest ledge. I arrived this morning just in time for a morning snack. They are really impressive looking birds.

Everyone's out of the tray...

Maybe they will meander down to the other cam! So cute and so big!!

Hopefully not 'til after banding!  Don't need them running around the ledge quite yet!

Yes mother!  Sad

Am thrilled we get to watch Mariah & Kaver's great-grandkids.  happy  And thanks to all who made it happen, especially with the streaming video.

I can't remember - who named Archer? And what does his name signify?

Thanks,

Doug Garbutt reports: We have picked the names for our young falcons. They have been named Sampson, Cimaron, Skylar & Archer. These are the names we pulled out of a hat from the ones submitted by the employees. We also had our 1st one fledge early this morning. He flew around the tower and landed back in the nest box twice! Later he flew over to the other grain elevator and back to our building 4 times over the course of the day. I went back out to the mill at around 8pm and found him on the very top of our elevator (above the nest box). I think he may spend the night there. He flew very well. You guys were right on with the projected fledge date. You said 5 days and it was exactly that. We'll keep you up to date.

Doug Garbutt reports: Banding Day!

The 4 eyases were banded today with great success. Since the 1st one hatched on May 9th, they were pretty mobile. Attending the event (besides the crew lucky enough to be working at the mill that weekend) were MNR bander, Mark Heaton & his 3 children, Anne Yagi from the MNR & Bruce Massey & Mark Nash from the CPF. After climbing the grueling 12 floor trek, (each floor 3 times the height of a normal floor), lugging all the necessary equipment, the crew finally reached the summit. The awesome sliding door on the front of the nest box ad been closed for about an hour before the banding crew arrived. This didn't seem to bother the chicks much but the adults were really freaked out to say the least. Some of the Mill workers that were out on the roof replacing filters had to retreat inside as the adult falcons were aggressively attacking them. When the chicks were removed from the box & brought to be banded, all involved were amazed at the incredible specimens in front of them. It was determined that there were 3 Males & 1 Female. This was a good thing in a season that had produced few female birds. The 3 males were named Sampson, Skylar & Archer, the female was named Cimaron. Everyone attending the event went away with a sense of amazement. I will forward some pics asap. The young ones here this year seem to be just fine & I assume they will be fledging this week some time.

Everyone is thrilled to find the offspring here and there.  Another of the falcons has been the resident female in Elizabeth, NJ for several years.  And she is as ferocious as her mother.

Mike and I are invited to the banding next Tuesday, May 25 probably at 11 am.  We have to be there by 10.  And we thought the chick check was the ultimate falcon experience.

Congrats!  clap have fun

May 17, 2010: A Jersey City alumnus nesting in Connecticut!
In June, 2005, we banded three peregrine chicks at the Jersey City nest site. One of them was a female with color band *V/*5. We recently got a resighting of this bird and learned she is nesting on a cliff in New Haven, Connecticut. The nest is located in East Rock Park , a city park with an interesting rocky ridge that is part of a series of ridges running north-south through the Connecticut Valley Lowlands of Massachusetts and Connecticut. At its peak it is about 550’ above sea level.

Wow...a natural habitat nesting. Cool.

On the tv news, two of the anchors rappelled down old changing scene as part of a fund raiser.  The rappelling was broadcast.  One of them said "there's a dead bird here."  I laughed.  He apparently found some falcon food storage!

I'm surprised they only found A dead bird!  Shocked

Must not have gone down by the elevator shaft...  silly

Kaver's spot!  heart
